Description
I've been asked lots of times which are my tools, and I've also been asked to post a picture of them, I don't know if it's of any help, but thought I'd post it anyway. These are just ome of my most used ones, but sometimes I use more regular pencils.

Me han preguntado muchas veces que materiales utilizo para dibujar, y también me han pedido que enseñe alguna imagen, no se si será de alguna ayuda, pero bueno.
Son los materiales que más utilizo, pero a veces empleo más lapiceros.

i disappointed in koh-i-noor's pencils, their graphite isn't smooth enough, like some tiny parts of clay are not mixed in it correctly, they get on the way, haven't you felt it?
i recommend lyra art design.
you use lots of tools, i get it done with erasers, 9B pencils, HB pencil, sharpener and paper... and a squirrel-tail brush to wipe off eraser crap.

This is really nice, thanks. I'd stopped drawing for a while, and forgot the tricks of the trade. Seeing your Q-tips just solved one of the problems that was bugging me for the past couple of days. I wish I could lay my hands on a 0.3 mechanical pencil - they're just not that common here. I mostly use 0.5 2B leads for just about everything. Yes, my art teacher (10 years of so ago) said I should use a pencil, but I proved her wrong by turning out stuff her star students couldn't produce with just a mechanical pencil and eraser. It does take a lot longer though.

Well, you should use whatever you feel comfortable with, I use mechanical pencils a lot, they're great for details and textures. Yes, 0.3 mech pencils are hard to find...maybe through Internet...
0.3 HB and 0.5 2B leads are the ones I use the most.

omg ... I use only 2 pencils: one regular ( i don`t know what type it is , I think HB
) and the other is a mechanical one 1 mm , a regular eraser and for blending I use my fingers
Maybe that`s one of the reasons why the quality of my drawings it is poor...

You know what's funny?! Now when I gathered a lot of tools, I`ve lost my inspiration...so much time has passed since I haven`t been able to draw anything. I think this summer are almost 2 years since my last drawing...

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Well, I cut the click eraser so I leave it with a sharpen edge and I use it to make highlights with it.

Yeah, the surface textures... I have a... cookie board that's of a wood so tough that I preferred to use it as a drawing board

Surface textures can ruin a drawing...Placing more papers under the drawing works as well, everyone finds their own method

yes indeed, yours is a very resourceful one too When I'm not at home I also use a plain, tough plastic clipboard. Works well for travels when I stick to the A4 format.

I never really thought about mixing up mechanical and regular pencils. Teachers have usually told me to avoid mechanical pencils, but I have one that I really like and use it anyway... but I always used either my mechanical pencil or a couple of regular ones.
I'm so using the mechanical-pencils-for-detail-and-other-pencils-for-shading trick. Thankyou! Very kind of you to show us.

nabey In reply to LeikEerie [2009-01-14 12:41:07 +0000 UTC]
Well, I think nobody should tell you to avoid specific tools, everyone needs to find the tools they are comfortable with, I feel very comfortable with my mech pencils. And they're very useful for details since they're always sharp.
Glad you found helpful my detailing-shading thing.
Oh, and I just don't use blending stumps that much because I rather the smooth blending of a tissue or a Q-tip. And what I never use are my fingers, they always leave marks no matter what.

Oh, and I was surprised to read that you said you don't really use blending stumps that much. You must have an insanely soft touch!!

Wow, I thought you might have been using charcoal or something with the shading values you get. Hope to one day get the detail and shading that you have mastered....
So has anyone asked you for any techniques you might use? A list of tools do help, but if someone doesn't know how to use them right or in the right combo it really does no good...

nabey In reply to Nathien [2009-01-14 12:36:53 +0000 UTC]
Sure you will get the detail and shading you wish for, it's just preactise and patience (seriously)
Yeah, I've been asked lots of times, and I guess I'll eventually post a FAQ or maybe a tutorial... I don't know because there are so many good tutorials out there...

Well, I found them in a department store, those I use aren't rare or special, just regular mech pencils

Aw yes. Surfaces always matter when drawing. Nice smooth surface= GOOD.... unless you love wooden coffee table textures.
So, 5b pencil is the darkest ya go to, eh?

nabey In reply to Crystal-LJ [2009-01-14 12:31:47 +0000 UTC]
haha, well, I know I don't like wooden table testures, lol, they've ruined some drawings of mine in the past...
Yes, usually the softest/darkest pencil I use is 5B, but I have some 6B, 8B and 9B just in case. But i rarely use them.

Next time you ever draw on wooden tables and they give you those textures you do not want, you slap the table multiple times and go, "BAD, TABLE, BAD!"

I think this will be very useful for many artists
A lot of people think we only need 1 pencil, an eraser and paper lol.
Don't want to be annoying, but these things you use aren't tortillions but blending stumps! Tortillions are wrapped up pieces of paper which look similar to very small markers like you can see here !
Hope you're doing fine have a great week!

Yeah, a lot of people gets surprised when you tell them you use more than one pencil, lol.
Thank's for pointing it out, I've used both tortillions and blending stumps and always (always!) mix their names in English, I fixed it.
Well...I haven't written you because I've been busy (what a surprise...) and because lately everything is going quiiite wrong for me, but well, I'll hang in here and hope everything will be sorted out soon...
Hope you're fine...or at least better!

Ooh, cool!! You know, the first time you mentioned toritillions in your description for a submission (or in a comment, I don't remember), I thought you meant tortillas, like the food. Then I realised that wasn't what you meant. Haha, I'm weird, I know...but now that I see what they actually are, I'm kinda disappointed that you don't use a massive tortilla wrap to do your blending with!!

LOL, yeah, the name is weird, haha, it'd be fun though to see someone blending with a tortilla LOL!!!
Anyway, I mixed the names, those are blending stumps not tortillions, I always mix them, I've used both of them and always mix their names when translating them! =Cataclysm-X was nice to tell me I had written it wrong, lol!

Wow, those are all the pencils you use?!?! I'm amazed that you can get that kind of shading using only a few H's and B's. I've never tried using mechanical pencils, though. I should try it - they would stay sharp... Thanks, that really did help!
