A new, simple kind of tutorial. I'm sure that when a person holds a pencil properly, it will help a lot with getting better at drawing, especially at shading. Many beginners may not pay attention how to hold a pencil, so their skills are improving much more slowly.
I really do hope it helps

EDIT:
I see my tutorial became the subject of controversy.
- first of all, I'll repeat the most crucial sentence of it: COMFORT MATTERS THE MOST! You should hold a pencil as you want to. No one is obliged to follow my tips. I just presented the way I draw, I shade and I found out that there are people who hold a pencil exactly like me! I know that there might be a billion of other ways of holding pencils, and you might find my own ones incorrect, but I wanted to share them with you anyway.
- I said 'I hope it helps', 'cause I truly believe that if someone holds a pencil for instance vertically, it brings more damage than profit.
- I'm not the only one, who thought of advices which cover the subject of holding a pencil. Google, find out on your own

So you might follow my tips, but I don't insist on it, guys! Take them or leave them
But if someone wants to protest with 'you're wrong, my way is the best' or 'you make people believe your ways of holding are the only correct ones', please don't comment, because you obviously didn't read the tutorial and misunderstood my statement.

For the background I used this portrait of Jensen Ackles:

New drawings coming very soon ^^

I hold my pen like that too! I used to be made to have special english class lessons at school because i 'didn't know how to hold my pen properly' - but it didn't change anything! Still write like this now, hehehe.

Thanks for the awesome tips

Really? I can't believe there can be such classes Good they haven't changed the way you hold pens, personal comfort is the most important.
Thanks and you're welcome!

I also put a pencil on my ring finger but I guess I have to practise more to draw smooth lines like these

Ilojleen In reply to ninjapigeon123 [2013-06-11 13:00:02 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's because in every tutorial I add my drawing as the background. And because I like this portrait of Jensen I did, I used it for the background

Thanks for the tutorial.

I wonder if this tutorial would work for graphics tablets too?
Graphics tablets have a stylus which is like a pencil.
The stylus does not get short like a pencil but the nib will wear down after a while.

I don't know if it worked, as I've never had a tablet in my hands

I have had a tablet in my hands but the nurses make sure I swallow it quickly.

Hahah, nice one Actually, I have had both the tablet-pill and the tablet-digitizer in my hands, but typing the last comment quickly, I wasn't accurate: I meant I have never drawn with the stylus on the digitizer

sevenofeleven In reply to Ilojleen [2012-05-22 14:52:48 +0000 UTC]

When I started, I would look at the tablet but after a while I just look at the screen.

Used to work at a cool job and the graphics tablet was built into the desktop.

i always thought it was funny how people are interested in this, but i have also been asked the same question a few times but mostly i think those kinds of questions come from people who don't usually draw so they think we perform stunts with pencils and materials to get something done, while actually it's all practice and personal choice. this could be helpful, though i think it naturally comes to an individual, depending on what they're trying to draw i never paid attention to how i hold a pencil because i switch it between my fingers like crazy, but someone sometimes (if they happened to be in the room with me) would ask - how are you holding your pencil, looks so weird and cool

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ilojleen In reply to Pencil-Stencil [2012-02-13 11:29:50 +0000 UTC]

Hi! Sorry for the late reply, but I haven't been there for month.

I agree with you, I have never know why people ask such questions, but since they kept repeating, I thought I might show them how I do this I believe there might be as many different positions of pencils as many people are, but I'm also convinced there are some way you shouldn't hold it. And again, you're right it comes naturally, as it came to me, but I dunno, some people just crave to be enlighted

Don't take this as sounding nasty or snide, because I don't mean it to
