A new, simple kind of tutorial. I'm sure that when a person holds a pencil properly, it will help a lot with getting better at drawing, especially at shading. Many beginners may not pay attention how to hold a pencil, so their skills are improving much more slowly.
I really do hope it helps

EDIT:
I see my tutorial became the subject of controversy.
- first of all, I'll repeat the most crucial sentence of it: COMFORT MATTERS THE MOST! You should hold a pencil as you want to. No one is obliged to follow my tips. I just presented the way I draw, I shade and I found out that there are people who hold a pencil exactly like me! I know that there might be a billion of other ways of holding pencils, and you might find my own ones incorrect, but I wanted to share them with you anyway.
- I said 'I hope it helps', 'cause I truly believe that if someone holds a pencil for instance vertically, it brings more damage than profit.
- I'm not the only one, who thought of advices which cover the subject of holding a pencil. Google, find out on your own

So you might follow my tips, but I don't insist on it, guys! Take them or leave them
But if someone wants to protest with 'you're wrong, my way is the best' or 'you make people believe your ways of holding are the only correct ones', please don't comment, because you obviously didn't read the tutorial and misunderstood my statement.

For the background I used this portrait of Jensen Ackles:

Very good tutorial. I hope it gets more attention.
It's surprising that so many people can't think of this simple thing: to experiment with the pencil. And even more surprising why most art instructors don't mention these stuff to their students :/

I've been using pencils until they're little nubs.

No wonder I've been having difficulties.

Great tutorial.

Thanks, glad you find it useful. But I know what you can do if you don't want to throw away too short pencils - buy a pencil extender I found out there is something like this not so long ago and I want to buy it ^^

Hm, yeah, here I have to digress. I don't think the way you hold a pencil does really have an influence on the skill of an artist. My own experience tells me that out of 100 artists you will find 100 different recipes to make a drawing; every artist must explore on their own how they feel more comfortable with their tools.

Also, I don't think that it is a good advice to stop using a pencil when it becomes too short. If it's cheap pencils, maybe, but for expensive pencils it is probably more advisable the use of pencil extenders.

Ilojleen In reply to ArielRGH [2011-02-18 08:48:00 +0000 UTC]

I respect your opinion, but disagree with it. For example you will never ever shade properly, if you hold a pencil vertically. It just doesn't work. And as I said at the very end: comfort matters the most. I don't insist, demand, beg anyone to hold a pencil like me. I agree with the part "100 artists you will find 100 different recipes to make a drawing" but I showed my way. You're not obliged to follow it

Personally, I haven't came across expensive pencils. But what's the point of using pencils, which are not cheap? I use very cheap pencils [I calculated their cost by this online calculator and it says that the price I pay for one pencil is even less than 0.34 CAD] and obtain good results. I use short pencils only for details, but they are uncomfortable to shade large areas.

Anyway, I will recap my thoughts: you can read my tutorial, which shows the way I draw, and take it or leave it. You might also just try, then quit my tips

It's okay Dominika. We don't always have to agree. I just had a bit of a problem with two of the claims you made. At least we agree on the part that comfort matters the most.

$0.34???? Are you kidding me? I pay about $1.50 for each of my sanguine-sepia chalk pastels (and I bought them in South America... in the US/Canada they are just nowhere to be found!). You see, this summer I will be traveling to Europe for research and a conference, and the plan is to also buy pencils. I suspected that the factories being there they would be cheaper but not that cheap! OMG. This is one of the many reasons why I hate North America, they don't have what I want.

Anyway, I don't want to turn this into a political rant LOL. My point is that you may want to use more expensive stuff to achieve different effects. I am not exactly a big fan of graphite or charcoal, I am more of a pastel person. And I like to take full advantage of them.

Keep drawing, I love your drawings

I know, that's why I said in spite of having diffrent point of views, I respect your opinion
Yeah, even less. 1 zł is $0,34, and I pay less in some shops... 0.90zł, thanks to student's discount. You say you buy pastels for $1,50 but they have always been more expensive than pencils, I pay more or less the same price for pastels.
I didn't want it turned into a political rant either, just saying my opinion Of course you can use more expensive tools to get various results, and I'd never throw away a pastel/pastel pencil when it's short, 'cause they do cost more than pencils, but graphite pencils are really cheap. However, I've found the solution: pencil extenders. I'm gonna buy one, so no more disposing pencils until they get reaaaally short

Thanks so much, have a great day

wiesz co myślę, że każdy i tak inaczej trzyma ołówek jak mu jest wygodnie, ja trzymam strasznie kosmicznie a jak go wezme tak jak u Ciebie to nie umiem rysować.

i suppose this could be helpful, though, i don't really think you can instruct someone how to hold a pencil... I've never actually heard of anyone giving that sort of advice before.

P.S. Google 'how to hold a pencil' - there's a bunch of tips, how to do it. I'm not the first person who thought of such tutorial

No worries. I didn't mean to make it seem like i was calling you a crazy person for writing the tutorial. As i said, i suppose it could be helpful... especially for those who are just learning to draw.

Well, there's always must be the first time As I told other people, it's just the way I draw, you doesn't have to hold a pencil like me. A lot of people ask how I draw and holding a pencils is an important part of it. You may diasagree, 'cause everyone has own individual way of holding a pencil, but I repeat: it's just me and my tips which you can follow or not
