Oh, also, appending a thought to my comment. I did show this:

which gives the idea of the range of motion, but what do you think, should I give some more specifics?

Thank you for your interest. Yes, you are correct. It is my intention, however, not to confuse beginning artists with too much "You can do it this way, but you don't have to, or try it like this, but you don't have to". I'd rather just show them one way that will guide them into the right mindset, which is in fact the joints, not the hand positions, you're right, and then later they will figure out themselves that they can hold it any way they dang please. But like I say, I think it's like holding an instument. Eventually, many musicians develop their own techniques for posture and hand positions, but when you're first learning, if you try that stuff it'll confuse your mind about what you're trying to do. And you're right about the tools, conte in particular is one of my favorite mediums, and one of the best to use with the figure. The great thing about hand positions, though, they actually do allow you to do some things that writing position can't: for instance, with a stick medium like conte, unless I was using gesture style I really couldn't get that thick to thin roll from the side of the conte onto the edge that I love so much. That's really a technique thing but it's like calligraphy: there's certain things you can't do with your fingers in the way. Anyway, thank you for your insightful comments, I hope you enjoy the tuts to come. Consequently, I update the tuts on DA more frequently than the ones on my site, just so you know. ^^:
