Description

When animal life was first introduced to Notus (temporary name) it very quickly diversified into a huge diversity of forms. One early result of this was a derived annelid called the ichtyovermis ("Fish Worm"), which used its array of simple limbs like a pair of large fins. Although it is similar to the Cambrian chordates, as annelids already are, it has a few notable differences. For example, the gills on early chordates (such as lampreys) are a series of pits, but the ones on ichtyovermis are more like a pair of scoops with holes in the back. Also, since their fins are found along the sides, not the top and bottom, they swim a lot like a dolphin. While these sound superficial, they will have a huge effect on their future evolution, as the marine mammals they resemble have a much different fin layout. However, the details on that will have to wait until we have fully explored the early Protogene sea.
