Description so why this title? let me explain (if you don't cry, you have no soul):
-

Thomas Jefferson and his wife Martha, enjoyed reading together “Tristram Shandy” by Laurence Sterne.
As Martha lay dying in their bed at just 33, she began writing a passage from the book but too weak, Thomas finished it, transforming the passage into a final dialogue between husband and wife:

[written by Martha] Time wastes too fast: every letter I trace tells me with what rapidity life follows my pen. The days and hours of it are flying over our heads like clouds of windy day, never to return - more every thing presses on -

[written by Thomas] and every time I kiss thy hand to bid adieu, every absence which follows it, are preludes to the eternal separation which we are shortly to make!

It seems like Thomas didn’t have the strength to finish the entire quote: —Heaven have mercy upon us both.

After his wife’s death Jefferson folded the paper with a lock of her hair inside and stashed the cherished memento in a secret drawer beside his bed, where it remained until his death.
Its wear showed that it was opened and refolded often.

-
note: i read a lot about Jefferson, i know what happened after her death, what he did but there is one thing i'm sure about: he never recovered totaly from her death and she was the only woman he ever really loved. I KNOW I SHOULD STOP DRAWING THEM BUT I CAN'T!!! LEAVE ME ALOOOOONE!!!

I think it is amazing you draw a love story so untold.

How did you become so interested in them?

nami64 In reply to Zehabix [2012-09-29 23:07:23 +0000 UTC]

my interest started with the mini serie 'John Adams'. there are just a few scenes with thomas jefferson but he fascinated me immediately. then i started to try to find informations about him and i read a lot and i found this amazingly tragic and doomed love story with Martha voilà!

I am highly touched by the attention you have given these two. It is something that we all wish to find in our lifes one day. I have no issue or spat with their repeated apperances. I love the dramatic lighting from each of their peices- I feel it gives weight to the situation. Shows that there really is light and dark, light with love and black with out it.

Currently being in a conflicted delima of love myself. I find these peices to be both bitter and inspiring. Continue please.

It's a beautiful piece. Your details are always so wonderful, the emotion comes through even though you can't see his face. I'd love to see another happy one, too.

Regarding what happened after her death: I think it's easy for us to judge him, so many years after it happened, but the truth is, grief and loneliness can lead people to do strange things. This was a man who had lost much in his life, and it's hard for us to say what we would have done in the same situation. Rather than judging him, I prefer to just appreciate all the amazing things he did. He really was an incredible person, a true genius. His life with Martha was a real life love story. Though their tale ended tragically, it's nice to know that they had some time together. I hope we can all be so lucky as to have what they did.
