Description so why this title? let me explain (if you don't cry, you have no soul):
-

Thomas Jefferson and his wife Martha, enjoyed reading together “Tristram Shandy” by Laurence Sterne.
As Martha lay dying in their bed at just 33, she began writing a passage from the book but too weak, Thomas finished it, transforming the passage into a final dialogue between husband and wife:

[written by Martha] Time wastes too fast: every letter I trace tells me with what rapidity life follows my pen. The days and hours of it are flying over our heads like clouds of windy day, never to return - more every thing presses on -

[written by Thomas] and every time I kiss thy hand to bid adieu, every absence which follows it, are preludes to the eternal separation which we are shortly to make!

It seems like Thomas didn’t have the strength to finish the entire quote: —Heaven have mercy upon us both.

After his wife’s death Jefferson folded the paper with a lock of her hair inside and stashed the cherished memento in a secret drawer beside his bed, where it remained until his death.
Its wear showed that it was opened and refolded often.

-
note: i read a lot about Jefferson, i know what happened after her death, what he did but there is one thing i'm sure about: he never recovered totaly from her death and she was the only woman he ever really loved. I KNOW I SHOULD STOP DRAWING THEM BUT I CAN'T!!! LEAVE ME ALOOOOONE!!!

I actually did not know all of this stuff about Jefferson. This is heartbreaking and beautiful! Thank you for sharing via your art.

THERE IS NO NEED TO STOP
This partnership is so beautiful and sad, it's a shame the most beautiful things fade; flames to dust and all that. You do a lovely job of capturing it in artwork form

NO NEVER STOP IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL

Ugh I wish I could write a coherent, constructive sentence on what I like about this piece but...uuuugh! The lighting and the color palette are so nice and soft, there's definitely an air of romanticism about it. And oh god the story, so beautiful and tragic!

Please, don't worry about us. I quite enjoy these artworks and would love to see countless more. I'm not a huge fan of history, and never took the time to really, truly focus on the individual lives throughout it all, but from the first picture you drew of this couple, I immediately fell in love with them both. And while I still despise history, filled with so much death and war and utter stupidity of mankind, I find myself reading a tad bit more of it, and trying to find the rare bits of goodness in them.

Though, I don't believe any of them compare to Thomas' love for Martha. Their story is beauty at its finest. One can only hope to see such a sight, much less long for it in their own lives. I hope they both rest comfortably, and together, wherever we may end up in the End.

That is really beautiful. Both the picture and the story and the text from the book. I don't think you should stop drawing them. I really love the pictures you've done of them and though I know little about the history of the USA and even less about Thomas Jefferson I really like the little things I get to know about him and his family. So don't stop drawing them. (:

Leur histoire est si belle, si triste... C'est touchant de voir l'amour qu'il portait à sa femme, et c'est si triste que le destin ait décidé de les séparer.

Just wondering Nami what originally sparked your interest int Thomas Jefferson and Martha to begin with was it a class lesson,a book you read, documentary, or tv mini series. I love your art of them just curious what it was that first sparked your interest in them or reading so much about Thomas.

nami64 In reply to bratyprincess198 [2012-09-28 20:09:45 +0000 UTC]

well it started with the mini serie 'John Adams' (FANTASTIC serie btw) but as the name says it, it's not centered on TJ but JA... but we see hims during a few scenes. And as in France (where i live) we don't learn the American Revolution, i started to be very curious about this period. And i fell in love with Jefferson. He such a contradiction and a complex character voilà

That's really cool. Yeah I have to say when in come's to american history (since i am normally a fan of foreign history japanese, french, british, norse and many others) the american revolution and the civil war are my favorite era's in american history and i'm american so i don't know if that's a good thing of bad I remember watching a mini series a few years back that focused on a lot on all the founding fathers i believe or at lest most of them i just can't remember the name of it. Like i said before love your art you are very talented and are very good about having your images portray such deep emotions.
