Here's what I made for Otakon 2009: Alex Mercer from the game [Prototype]. Ironically I haven't played the game yet, so I thought if I can't play the game I might as well cosplay the main character.The Blade Arm is comprised of cardboard, masking tape, and tin foil. It took a long ass time to finish: maybe about a week straight if I put all the times together.
Mercer's jacket was a bitch to complete as well. When I bought it, it was originally silver, so I had to spray paint it black. Unfortunately, the jacket started sticking to itself because of the paint, therefore a lot of the black peeled off, revealing the silver and whatever was under the original paint coat. I ended up not fixing those areas and leaving it the way it was; it kinda gave off the "really worn out" look, which was pretty sweet considering the style and setting of [Prototype]. I also made the white stripes and red design on the jacket as well.
In conclusion, this is probably my first cosplay in which I practically made everything, not just the prop. It was a pain in the neck and took a lot of time and patience, but I think it really paid off in the end.
I'll try to post some pics of the actual cosplay when I can.

How did you exactly do the jacket, like what did you use to make the white stripes and red design? I really enjoyed your tutorial on the claws and plan on finishing the whole thing this time

The jacket I bought from Goodwill and spray painted it black (it was originally silver)<- I don't recommend doing this because it makes the jacket sticky. :'D
The white stripes was masking tape that happened to stick to the jacket when I tried to preserve the silver under it during spray painting. I just painted over the tape with white acrylic.
I created a stencil for the red design, drew it on rows of red duct tape, cut it out, and applied it to the back of the jacket.

You're right, the collar is supposed to be red, though it wouldn't look very good if i painted it in - unless I spray painted it or something. I haven't worn this thing for a while so it may not get a repaint...

Unfortunately, replicating this prop would be very expensive and I don't have the time to make a prop of this nature any time soon.

Can you explain more about how you taped the design on the back?
I know you used red duct tape but i am wondering if theres more to it

Well, I first drew the design out to scale on a piece of paper - that took a lot of reference pictures to get. You only need to draw one half of the design since the final result will be symmetrical.
Then I cut the the design out like a stencil on that same piece of paper. Using the paper like a stencil, I was able to trace each individual piece onto the roll of red duct tape.
There might be an even easier way to go about this, but that's how I made the red design on the jacket.

I'm a bit curious....
the logo on the back of the jacket. is it the real one? I'm making my boyfriend this as a cosplay, and we can't find the damn logo anywhere!!!! 
I've even watched him play the game, but we still haven't found a good enough pic to refer to...

Yeah, the logo on the back of the jacket is real - I mean it's not perfect but it very close to what the actual logo is. Freeze some of the cutscenes on youtube, you might find something there.
Also, this might be a little out of the way, but the Prototype guidebook has some concept art in the back. Among the concepts is the design on the back of the jacket.

I actually saw you and took a picture of you at Otakon! (if you remember any photographers at all, I was dressed up as Chii from Chobits at the time and we were by the fountains... yeah, my memory is too vivid) XD I feel like a stalker now.
