FINALLY THE LAST PART OF THE ALEX MERCER CLAWS TUTORIAL IS COMPLETE!!!!! \\(^O^)//YAYHAPPYREJOICEIT'SFINALLYDONE!!!!!!
As already stated in the tutorial, thank you guys for putting up with me and waiting till the end of the tutorial. You guy are awesome, and I hope this tutorial has/will help you make decent [Prototype] claws! :3
--UPDATE--
Here's a helpful addition from
If you don't mind me adding, for those who want a more soft/smooth finishing, You can cover the entire arm in Hot Glue.
Optionally you can leave it in the sun for a day after that as the glue will melt slightly making it a bit more smoother.

I'm not finished with the arms yet, but so far it's looking good!
I struggled with keeping the claws in place, so this is what I did: After covering the arm with masking tape and gluing the spikes, I covered the entire thing in papier mache made of news paper and wallpaper paste. After it dried, I put 2-3 layers at the base of the spikes and the claws so that they would stay in place. Thus creating more support and (hopefully) the claws won't break easily.
I wouldn't recommend covering the entire arm in multiple layers of papier mache, as the veins might fade out and it will get considerably heavier.

Hey bro, I want to thank you for this awesome tutorial, I am halfway though my claw, and it looks amazing already. Would you happen to have a tutorial on the arm blades?

No problem! Glad it was helpful in some way I don't have a tutorial for the blades, but it's pretty much the same steps as the claws, just different cardboard shapes.

I'm working on this right now, and I'm trying to make it go up past my elbow. x-x I'm not going to cover the tinfoil in tape- instead, I'm covering the arm in tin-foil veins. 8D

Just one question, what would you recomend if you are trying to have it at full arm length but im having trouble with the elbow part, what do you suggest?

Nanaga In reply to kiba-raptor [2012-01-25 19:38:12 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, getting past the elbow is tricky, which is why I stopped at that point.
But to continue past that point, you could build the claws up the elbow like this tutorial, and then build a plate or something that could strap around your bicep. I'd look at knight armor for reference.
^I hope that made sense

I just wanted to say thanks for a fantastic tutorial! and your cosplay is SO COOL!! X3
I'm going to cosplay as this guy with HUGE claw thingys on his arms, so this was very helpful! thanks a bunch!! >w<
just some questions, how long would they last? and does it break easily, like, if it hits something? ^^'
anything else than that, it's awesome! Cx

You're very welcome! I'm glad the tutorial worked out for you!
As for the prop's durability, it depends on how you built them. If your claws have the tendency to shift around when you wear them, most likely their life span isn't going to be very long. I wouldn't recommend hitting stuff with it, as it would probably break. At least, I know my claws didn't last very long. I only wore them to one con and the claw parts broke off, but it was extremely flimsy to begin with.

I would; however there are a few things I should warn you about.
1) If I were to make them for you and shipping is involved, it might be a bit of a risk, because the claws in this tutorial are made from cardboard, there may be a chance that it could get damaged. :/
2) Also, because they are made of cardboard, they are flimsy. Will you be alright with a fragile prop?
