Description Here's what I made for Otakon 2009: Alex Mercer from the game [Prototype]. Ironically I haven't played the game yet, so I thought if I can't play the game I might as well cosplay the main character.
The Blade Arm is comprised of cardboard, masking tape, and tin foil. It took a long ass time to finish: maybe about a week straight if I put all the times together.
Mercer's jacket was a bitch to complete as well. When I bought it, it was originally silver, so I had to spray paint it black. Unfortunately, the jacket started sticking to itself because of the paint, therefore a lot of the black peeled off, revealing the silver and whatever was under the original paint coat. I ended up not fixing those areas and leaving it the way it was; it kinda gave off the "really worn out" look, which was pretty sweet considering the style and setting of [Prototype]. I also made the white stripes and red design on the jacket as well.

In conclusion, this is probably my first cosplay in which I practically made everything, not just the prop. It was a pain in the neck and took a lot of time and patience, but I think it really paid off in the end.
I'll try to post some pics of the actual cosplay when I can.

Haha I can't say I remember every one of my photographers either, despite not having very many I agree, Otakon was loads of fun, and if I can make it in 2010, I'll totally be attending again!

So have you finally managed to get your hands on the game by any chance?

lolz, yeah, I hope I can go back next year, if not then the year after that cuz saving up money for the con's a little hard...

And yeah, I got the game. Already beat it and replaying it till I get as many achievements I can! Such a badass game!

Ahhh tell me about it... I spent so much!! My costumes, gas for the car, the hotel, food, etc.... @__@ I wish there were more cons in my area or nearby so I wouldn't have to spend so much! Or that I were rich so I could afford to travel more often XD

Yay!!! I actually haven't beaten it yet My boyfriend's the one with the 360 and the game, so I need to go to his place to play it, and I keep getting distracted from playing it XD Also, whenever I sit down to play, I end up spending more time on events than the plot-related missions, LOL.

Me too! Most of my money went towards buying materials for cosplay before the con even started. 0_o Plus...with the bad economy and all... finding a job sucked cuz it didn't work. So yeah, I feel your pain.

haha Yeah, I have more fun just wandering around the city trying to be a normal dude rather than completing the story missions. Try doing that sometime, act normal... it's really amusing, especially when you bump into people. I still have ONE more web of intrigue target to find... which is gonna be a pain in the ass. >.<

Curse cosplay and its expensive qualities!! Speaking of, how much did your Mercer outfit end up being?
I was lucky enough to get a job from my dad that has decent pay, though I'd prefer spending my summer in other ways... Oh well, money's definitely a plus!

Hahaha I'm way too entertained by Mercer running through a bunch of people. And they don't even give a shit; they just get right back up, only to be knocked over again when I run the other way XD Another thing I really like doing is sneaking into the bases. I have a feeling I'm gonna start hating it soon since they're getting harder and harder to infiltrate, but they're still much more fun than the "consume targets" events in my opinion >.<

Nanaga In reply to tastee-tea [2009-08-19 15:18:16 +0000 UTC]

GAH!! I know really! >.< Honestly, it wasn't expensive at all; Mercer's outfit is pretty much finding a bunch of normal clothes and putting it together. I just went to a Goodwill and voila... got all I needed without spending a fortune. The blade arm, along with a bunch of other props I make are made from easy-to-find materials, so the only thing I really needed was spray paint and masking tape.
True that! That's convenient, when your parents know where you can get a job that doesn't require you driving too far away. Another reason I couldn't get a job was cuz I didn't have my license yet... Next year... I'm hoping for next year...

ROFL I'm surprised they live along enough for you to run the other way. Sometimes I tap them and they just... die. Kinda reminds me of when my friend came over and I showed her the game. The first person she saw wearing a pink jacket eventually led to the pink jacket serial killer Alex Mercer. haha, when you sneak into the base, do you kill everyone after or just casually exit? I'm actually the opposite, I preferred the consume targets cuz once the difficulty started rising, all the bases get those annoying viral detectors.

Waaah I tried going to the Goodwill nearby and they don't have anything that resembles a leather jacket @_@;; Same thing happened when I went to the Thrifty Shopper or whatever it's called Oh well, this costume isn't planned for anything in the near future, so I guess I can just keep going back and praying XD
I actually have to drive about 25 minutes to work XD But it's a fairly easy commute...
I hope you get your license soon! It seems like the older you get, the more annoying it is to have to go after it >__< (And I guess embarrassing once you're super old? Hahaha)

I don't think I've killed anyone with just pushing them... If I have, it wasn't enough for me to stop running through more people XD I kinda wish his disguise would stay while he had weapons, cause it would look so ridiculous (like, an old dude or random black guy with a blade for an arm? XD).
One time in a base, I spent some time stealth consuming as many people as I could. I ended up getting too bored with it and just killed the rest of the people XD
I'm a little worried that I'm gonna stop liking the base missions soon, cause I'm right at that part where those missions get super annoying D:

rly? >.< That sucks... hopefully they'll restock and have something similar. Though I have to admit, finding leather jackets in those kind of places isn't really easy, at least a nice jacket that resembles Mercer's. Good luck with the search! Oh wow... 25 minutes is quite a bit away. 0_o
I got my license last Friday, so it's all good. And yeah really, all those rules and restrictions about getting the license came around last year, so getting the license took a lot longer than what my friends had to go through. And it was a little funny to be the oldest one in the driver's ed course.

LOL That would be awesome! Be a chick with those muscle mass arms!! 0_o Not that it's really amusing to walk when you're disguised as a woman anyway lol.
haha nice D Though it would be amusing to see what happens if you stealth consume everybody... wonder if you get extra bonus points for consuming a whole base. 0_o
Oh yeah... it might be happen; at least you're aware of it.

Heh, I think the difficulty of locating these sort of things is all part of cosplaying in general. Thanks for the support! I think I'll check around the internet to see if I can find something good.
Congrats!! I'm not aware of these rules, not that I have that much of a reason to be anymore But it sounds like a pain. I'm not really sure what to say about driver's ed except that my teacher always pointed out how cute a dog was if someone was walking their dog... also, he talked about his cat a lot LOL

I didn't even think of that possibility, then again, I always forget I have muscle mass powers XD I actually have never used it Do you ever use that ability? @.@
My one friend attempted to stealth consume everyone, but there are more people in the base than you can see at first, so I don't think he got anything special.

BTW, I'm adding you to my friends list ^_^ And maybe we can talk on AIM or something like that? Cause this conversation is taking over your deviation page XD

Nanaga In reply to tastee-tea [2009-08-20 14:43:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, true that. And no problem!
lolz, thanks. LOL, wooooww, sounds like you had a blast in your class. My teacher was alright... despite the fact he always mentioned how bad of a driver his wife was and he gave off the impression that he really didn't want to be teaching the class in the first place. 0_o

haha, yeah I forget I have the ability, too. I never use it... maybe once or twice just to see if it works when I throw ACs at helicopters. In the end, skyjacking wins by a long shot. It's like the shield, I rarely use that. Do you use any of the armor abilities?
Ahh... sadness. It'd take too long too, plus it would suck if the soldiers just started respawning in some hidden part of the base.

YAY! Thanks for the add! I'll add you too! :3 haha, that's cool, though I'll have you know I don't log onto AIM very often. My AIM's theronlord.

tastee-tea In reply to Nanaga [2009-08-25 01:28:45 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha a blast would be an overstatement But the teacher's weirdness gives me something to talk about XD

I'm glad I'm not the only one who forgets about the muscle mass I don't even remember when he gets it, LOL.
I'll use the armor if I'm having trouble in an event/mission because of consistent dying, but I usually don't and I just blame the difficulty on the fact that the game has weird difficulty curve XD (well, I think it has one... @.@)

My AIM is drkblkforest, and I'm the exact opposite and I'm on constantly XD Not that I'm at my computer all the time, but I'm almost always signed in. Either way, I'm sure we can keep talking through DA notes or something, right?

Nanaga In reply to tastee-tea [2009-08-25 02:16:27 +0000 UTC]

lolz, I get ya.

I don't even think there was a special cutscene or something when you receive it. I think it just shows up in the upgrades menu and ur like... oh! What's this? 0_o Maybe that's why it's such a forgettable power. I do the same for the armor, and yes, there is a weird difficulty curve in the game. One mission your pretty much owning everything and then the next mission you're dying every five seconds. >.<

Cool! Thanks! Unfortunately the internet connection where I am at school sucks so I have a feeling AIM isn't gonna work most of the time. But yeah, we can still talk through DA, and if you're logged on all the time and I can find an area on campus that doesn't have a failing internet connection I'll log on too! :3

I'm very VERY impressed. I know I've looked around to buy the jacket (there's a market here, Activision!) and that's the closest I've seen to an accurate depiction. Expecially the design on the back.

Do you have "the muscle" that goes up from the blade? And damn it you stole my idea! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nanaga In reply to POPTART117 [2009-07-30 04:42:41 +0000 UTC]

I really wanted to do that but I didn't know how to make it functional. Same thing with the claws, which is another idea I wanted to do... 0_o
I didn't mean to! lolz X3

POPTART117 In reply to Nanaga [2009-07-30 04:52:37 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking of using artifical Grape vines and cords and wrap them around my fore arm and upper arm a few times.
I tried to think of a way to do the claws, nothing.
and it cool XP Btw how long is the blade?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nanaga In reply to POPTART117 [2009-07-30 16:07:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh that's a sweet idea! Never thought of that one.
lolz, I probably won't get to the claws until who knows when...
...and the blade is about 5' 10''.

Now whats the blade made of, cardboard and tin foil right? any Paper mache? Also wheres you arm go?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nanaga In reply to POPTART117 [2009-08-01 01:21:34 +0000 UTC]

Yup, cardboard, tin foil, and masking tape; no paper mache at all.
As to where the arm goes, it goes inside the sword, the area beside the hole in the blade. Also, my hand is open palmed, not really gripping anything inside.

AnastasiaA [2009-07-27 00:08:22 +0000 UTC]

Really? Tinfoil for the sword? Can you paint tinfoil? *totally clueless and unknowing of such talents and tools of the trade*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nanaga In reply to AnastasiaA [2009-07-27 06:19:27 +0000 UTC]

lolz the tin foil is used to mold forms, for instance with the blade arm, the veins. For me, it's a cheap way of shaping unique forms as opposed to using something like clay. In order to paint it, you have to cover all the foil; I used masking tape to pull this off... a hell of a lot of masking tape. 0_o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AnastasiaA In reply to Nanaga [2009-07-27 23:03:07 +0000 UTC]

Oooooh, I get it now. I had to use 2-3 layers of papier mache so I could spray paint it, or else it would eat the foam to nothing...
But that's a cool idea
