I love this movie, and the amount of detail and your unique style is just beautiful. Love how grim and full of emotion your artwork is.

I love Hayao Miyazaki's movies. If I had to guess about why they are not as popular in the states as anime fans would like, I would suggest it is not because they are Japanese...Disney owns the US rights to Ghibli...and Disney seldom misses an opportunity to make a buck...but because they are A) animated, and B) not made for kids. In the States, an animated movie is, if not by definition, then by cultural practice, a kids' movie. Take your 7 year old to Princess Mononoke because you think it's the next Mulan...and you and your kid will be in therapy for the next ten years! Oh...and...his movies tell a story...and take their time about doing it. Miyazaki is a meal served in a restaurant...in courses. Most American animation is served as a McDonald's Happy Meal. Both can actually be wonderfully filling...but they taste totally different. And if you are used to the Happy Meal, the luxurious lunch can be...unsettling. Our daughter cut her teeth on Spirited Away...at a young enough age not to be freaked out by it...and has been in love with Miyazaki movies since then. (Though I did wonder if it was a good thing to let her watch the movie due to the blood towards the end.) AND...she agrees with you that they are underappreciated. Our whole family was sad to hear that Miyazaki had decided to retire.

That's because they're foreign. America doesn't benefit promoting foreign films.
