It's an awesome looking gun, but I think the design flaw here is that anything can get in the way of closing the top half of the gun.

I agree on that!
But this is more like a battery compartment. So you clip the energy cell into the bottom part of the gun. Probably not something you would do on the fly though but the cell should last a while till it needs to be replaced.
In this case not super practical parts like this should be good enough. Also if you are not skilled, you would have trouble reloading a revolver without a speedloader too. Same with this thing
