I only visit here occasionally to follow your art I still would like to buy something someday! I think if you try to please people you run the risk of burning out or getting bored, so you should draw what you are inspired to do anyway. Whether it's on DeviantArt or somewhere else I hope you will continue to draw, and I hope it stays rewarding for you!

Your style is unquestionably unique; I haven't been able to find anything that comes close. It's like trying to find a band musically similar to Portishead, or Cake. I suppose that can be a blessing and a curse. Given what you've done here, though, I'm confident that whatever you branch out into you'll be capable of making it your own, and making it beautiful.

I do hope you won't swear it off forever, but I'd love to continue following your work whatever you do with it... so, stay or go, I hope you let us know where to look next!

I joined deviant art for one purpose, to find art that I liked. I don't like conventional art, I like things like this.
As for leaving your comfort zone, I actually like to leave mine, it's scary and makes me feel uncomfortable at first, but I feel great when I accomplish something new! You're art is amazing, instead of trying to paint different ways why not try reading a bit. Not conventional stuff but science, psychology, history, music. Expand your horizon and that should naturally expand your art. As you learn new things you'll want to try new things, as you try new things you'll find a style that you love, not one that's just different.
Or so I think
PS. I know this comment is probably a little late, but better late then never. I don't expect to be considered for anything I just felt like commenting

I understand where your coming from, try out these new art styles your after. No-one will be annoyed many people are here just to see amazing art from you. An art style doesn't have to define you for forever and a day, change it up that is the joy of being an artist. Whatever your choice is it is up to you all I want to say has already been said I just wish you the best of luck whatever decision you make.

My goal was simply to follow amazing artists like you!

If you do decide to leave DeviantArt, I won't and can't stop you, but I hope that you stay. All your pieces of art have this unique style that I've never seen anywhere else. It's a beautiful mix between geometric shapes, complex pattern, and just... amazingness. I can't describe it. Just go with styles your comfortable with, but exploring new topics isn't such a bad thing. You might discover something new!

From you, I want to see what you want to draw.

Let's see.. my primary goal when I joined deviantart... hmm x3 Theres so many feelings associated with deviantart that It's hard to explain. I joined 5 years ago and had no idea what I was getting into xD I decided to just give it a shot and post some poorly-drawn fanarts online. On that same day I got about 10 favorites on those fanarts and suddenly I was extremely excited about dA. Since drawing anime-style at school was a laughing matter and at home no one took me seriously (because they all thought it was a "phase" and I would grow out of it) deviantart is one of the few places that I felt people appreciated the things I enjoyed drawing.

My primary goal since then was to improve as much as possible to maybe someday reach the "pros" such as yourself and be able to make my watchers happy, just as the people I watch make me happy and inspire me with their amazing art x3

I hope you don't leave deviantart.. I will definitely miss seeing your art. But if you want to explore more topics and go out of your comfort zone, by all means do it (I just dont see why you'd have to leave dA for that :c ). Your watchers will support you no matter what path you choose to follow with your art.  In the end, your art is your creation, and no one can tell you what to do with it, you should just do what feels right to you.

First off: This is beautiful and the little character reminds me of Journey. You should do whatever you feel is right because you've already given us amazing art. I hate putting expectations on people and in my opinion you shouldn't try to pander to everyone's needs, just enjoy your art and do what you feel is right for you. (Cheesy I know)

Secondly:  I guess I joined because I wanted to follow inspiring artists who's art makes me happy. I wanted to help spur them on even just with little comments so they can improve and feel acknowledged and happy too. My goals pretty simple so I'll just sum it up in two words.

Create happiness.

I didn't really have a goal when I joined Deviantart and still don't have one. I just joined for the fun of it and to follow artists whom I found inspiring and great.
I don't have any special content that I wish to see from you, I just enjoy looking at your art regardless of what it is I think it's great how your art have so much meaning behind it. If you want to explore new things, you can go ahead, of course only if you want to.

I really like your art, and now that you mention it, the style is pretty similar. But I think that's good, because I don't have my own style (hoping to find one though). If you feel that your art is getting repetitive, try exploring other styles. There are many great artists on dA that you can take a look at! I don't think dA will hinder your exploration. If you post your new explorations, you will receive tons of feedback as well!

ANYWAYS, my primary goal when I joined dA was to see different types and styles of art from all over the world! And to have a place to showcase my own artwork so that it's not just between my family and friends.

Dearest Nanomortis, what I, personally, want to see most from you is whatever is in your heart!! It is absolutely okay if you want to completely change your style!! That being said it is also perfectly fine to keep it exactly as it is, tweak it here and there, or whatever mix you feel like~      I do hope that if you leave DA you let us know where you move to; I really want to keep watching you grow and progress! That being said, sometimes you just have to let is go~

When I first joined DA I wanted to get some exposure, and use that exposure to encourage me to draw more!!
....It didn't work... *cough*

The problem I have with your art is that it is extremely repetitive in many ways which makes it less exciting to look at over time. It is unique and while it works well with some themes, I feel it has little flexibility. I can understand your feeling of stagnation.
I joined DA to support artists and enjoy art as well as buy commissions. Now I stick around to appreciate art I enjoy

I did not have any big goal when joining Deviantart. I just wanted some place to show my art to others, and dA was the only one I knew of. This is one of my goals nowadays too, since I feel bad for all the drawings I draw and like but never upload anywhere. It's not that many people will see the ones I upload, either, but rather the feeling of not keeping things just for myself.
I also really enjoy seeing art by very talented people like you, and also supporting people who don't have as much skill yet (who are closer to my skill level) and seeing them (and you too) grow and develop as artists. That's why I say: if you want to try different things, do so! And please show them to us too ^^

My goals have changed a lot over the years so I'll just say them all. When I joined dA I joined because my best friend suggester it. I loved drawing and although I wasn't very good at it I was proud of my art and I loved talking to other people who also loved creating. As time went on my goals changed to developing my own style and characters (which is an on going process) and watching other people develop theirs. Through it I have made a few friends some of whom helped me through a lot. Now I stay because I have friends here,  I enjoy seeing other peoples art and because I have a few people that love my art. Which makes me happy because people don't seem to talk much on here any more. But mostly I put my art up for me as a kind of record. For me to look back at and watch my characters grow as I continue to develop my style. Though this has been hard for the past couple of years as I had a long time where I couldn't bring myself to create anything. I'm getting back on it now though and determined to work on anatomy some more.

As for leaving. I really hope you decide to stay. I can honestly say your artwork is some of my favorite. But as I said above I enjoy watching styles change and grow. So if you need to explore new subject matter or new styles then I will enjoy seeing that to. If your style changes then it's meant to. Art is expression of self at the end of the day. So I say go for it if that's what you need. I really hope you get your spark back. And I hope I can still see what you create in the feature x

I can see your style evolve over time and quite honestly, I preferred your older works.
Now that's not to say your newer works are bad, however the older works have a particularly strong atmosphere about the drawing that the newer (fully rendered) ones don't have. Part of the charm I feel is the way you use your negative spaces.

If you choose to leave Deviantart, I would like to know where your new home for artworks would be because while I may seem inactive (which I usually am on dA) I still do look at your works.

Personally Deviantart has become a place to "favourite" artworks that I feel I can learn from and reference it later by browsing through my favourites list and no longer for sharing my work so I think I know where you're coming from with wanting to leave this site. It's not as great as it used to be, in my opinion.

As far as what I'd like to see more of, well it'd be interesting if you tried animating this character. For several years I've world and style would make for such a beautiful 2D platformer game.

Personally I really love your style, both art and writing style. They somehow have this beautiful background and story. Plus you incorporated writing and art at the same time in your works! Two things that I aspire to do well. You tell a story with both, and do it incredibly.

But sometimes I feel that too, the feeling of being stuck. Somehow that comfort zone keeps you safe, but at the same time it keeps you from growing and improving. Because there is this inner fear that you won't do a good job or be accepted if you somehow change. Especially knowing that what you have in mind for yourself doesn't resonate with what you think people will accept.

All those fears and uncertainty should be put aside. Make art and writing as something that you personally enjoy, don't push yourself to create works that will only satisfy your viewers/watchers. Be kind to yourself and create things that you want to. Try new things, try a different style, try anything that you have always wanted but to scared to! Either you're scared of judgement or scared of being out of your comfort zone, just try it! Don't keep on burdening yourself for the sake of others, it hurts slowly and surely.

I am writing this for you, myself, and everyone out there that are feeling the same way. I apologize if I sound mean, demanding, or harsh in any way. I just want everyone to be free in expressing whatever they want through whatever art medium they choose. It feels oddly liberating to know that you will be judged whatever you do. I wish all the best in everything you do and I hope you know that we will all feel this way before changing for the better. Because change is a scary and uncomfortable thing but I'm sure it will be worth it.

Dakoa [2016-09-29 00:06:54 +0000 UTC]

I really like the contrast of the image; the crisp white of the girl against the darkness of the creatures behind her. It's really striking!

As for your question, I first joined DA to allow myself easy viewing access to a vast stockpile of talented creations, and 'potentially' contribute myself. However, that was over two years ago. I've changed a lot since then. I've moved continents, I've changed careers, and I've started pursuing my dreams. Now, I still view DA as a good way to view stunning works by talented artists, but I also use it as a motivator; it pushes me to work harder and improve myself; to contribute and put my work out there.

I understand what you mean about stagnating. It can be very easy to fall into a rut and not know how to get out. It's important to challenge yourself, and really explore what you want to do for your own sake, rather than other people's.

I felt like that myself recently, and that's prompted my current efforts with DA; to find an image every day that resonates with me and write flash fiction based upon it, regardless of genre or style. It puts me outside my comfort zone and means I continue to grow. It also forces me to come up with new ideas and practice constantly, hopefully refining my skills. As J-ko mentioned below, DA isn't the best place for writing, however it's a great source of inspiration and if you know what you want to get out of it then nothing else really matters (views, comments, commercial avenues, etc.)

With that in mind, my piece of flash fiction for today is based on this image and you can find it here; dakoa.deviantart.com/art/The-D…

The image is included as a preview for the writing (credited of course), setting the scene for the narrative. If you are okay with this then great! If not and you'd like me to remove the image just let me know.

Hope you work out what it is that you want to achieve, and I'd suggest that rather than working on content that others want to see, instead work on the kind of content that you want to create.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone! It's the best way to grow

I'm sorry to hear that you're thinking of leaving D: I feel like I get stuck in a rut too. I wish I could be able to draw very broad, but I end up sticking to what I know. Sometimes it's hard to leave your comfort zone... You may see your art as predictable, but I look forward to when you update. Looking at your art really inspires me to draw. Which is why I joined this site. I joined so I could meet other artists and learn from them, and hopefully learn how to grow and draw like them. But I'll understand if you need to take a break. It's not good to push yourself, you end up just hating to draw more that way

I joined DeviantArt originally to just look at cool art, but now that I've come back to it with a different purpose in mind, it's now a place to give my works exposure while finding inspiration from awe-inspiring works. It's a beautiful thing to see how people draw from their own thoughts, opinions, emotions, and memories to create something. Also, it seems like a good place to find like-minded people as I'm not the social butterfly I wish I was in real life

As for the serious talk, don't be afraid to evolve, just make sure you do it with a clear head and a strong heart. Right now I'm in a similar place with my life, having to decide whether staying in my current environment is worth it anymore, and how to thrive if I leave. Good luck with whatever path you take, and know you'll be missed if you decide leaving DA is best for you.

J-ko [2016-09-28 17:51:06 +0000 UTC]

I joined Deviantart back in 2004, and like you, I can't remember why I did. Give me a minute to think.

...

Unlike you, I'm no artist. I thought up stories very quickly, but I was a terribly slow writer. The fastest (and laziest) way to put down those thoughts was by drawing. Make no mistake: I can draw, but I'm very, very average. What I imagine isn't what comes out. And the fastest way to tell my friends what I had in mind was to post on Deviantart. It was easy to comment and fav and reply, everything that an art-based social website needed. Most of my friends abandoned their DAs, but DA became a habit, and sometimes habits outlive their purpose.

Then something happened: I won a few writing contests. Got a daily deviation too.

Almost overnight I hit a confidence high: If I can win a writing contest, then surely what I write has merit. and I started writing a LOT. Pumped out a short story every 2 months. DA isn't the best place for writing, but to build an account from scratch on other websites is too much work. So I posted my stories here. I barely get hits, but at least it's somewhere people can see. Nothing's changed since - turns out I'm a good writer, but I'm not an excellent writer. XD; But it's not stopped me from posting random flash fiction and poetry. I like trying new styles, new methods. A friend said we'll always lose that youthful raw style, but we always learn something new from it.

So I guess to answer your question, I joined DA because it was the easiest and fastest way for people to see my work. Feedback isn't as fast as art, but even my art doesn't get much views, so I'm used to it.

...

You'll probably ask, "Why did this random person write such a long story for a 1-sentence answer?" Partly for the sketch, but partly because I see so much doubt and uncertainty since I started following your art. I just want to tell you that's it's okay to change and experiment. There are times when I prefer your old style because it's gothic but not anime-ish, but your new style is also cleaner and easier to make out distinct people and shapes. It's clear from the comments that those who love your art - like *really* love it - will also support you whatever you decide to do. I'm already following you on Instagram, so if you decide to leave and change accounts or whatever, I'll follow you because I enjoy your art style. So please don't give up on yourself yet, there are worlds waiting to be explored. And when you're ready, so will your supporters.

At the very first beginning, my brother showed me some artworks on dA. (To be honest and cheesy, yours was one of them) I got really inspired and wanted to see more and understand how they can draw such fantastic work.
So I joined dA and after a few years, I uploaded a couple of paintings by myself. I hoped to reach people like me, who got inspired by art and want to learn it. This is my corny goal after all. Although my side doesn't spread well, I hope to reach a few enthusiastics after all. Someday I'll be one of these top dA's for sure.
Until then I'll practise everyday, focus on details at my surroundings and learn more day by day.
