Description Badrang (the stoat) and Martin (the mouse) from one of my favourite children (and adult?) books, Martin the Warrior.
Brian Jaques' writing style has had so much influence on how I make stories and characters, but I dont really realise until I re-read my scrappy/coverless/over read copy of Martin the Warrior.
This is based on a scene in the first chapter. I'm exploring a new style and wanted a sequence from a story that would be fun to work on! I really wanted to show off the contrast between Badrang's big ego and near-sociopathic nature with Martin's defiant and humble nature.
What do you think of this style?
I've spent alot of time trying to create backgrounds/colouring that were as simplified as how I enjoy drawing characters. But I was looking at some Edwardian illustrations and thought that maybe doing incredibly detailed/textured backgrounds and colouring would compliment my foreground characters more, and also give me a chance to bring out my love of how detail can bring out the surrounding culture of a story.

Also, wow I found a watercolour paper actually thick enough to take the ridiculous amount of water I use without cockling! (even paper stretching doesnt work for me :S)

/ramble I hope you like it!

For some reason unknown even to me, Badrang resembles the Thinker.

This is really cool, I love the detail of the splatters, but my favourite part is definitely the use of the perspective to emphasise the difference in size and nature of the characters. I think this expressive, slightly cartoon style actually works better than the style of illustrations used on the Redwall covers, where the attempt at realism kind of robs the animals of the character they show here.

Thank you for always giving such insightful comments! I agree too, I always preferred and remember the lovely cartoonish illustrations at the beginning of each chapter rather then the covers =3

I like the paint splatters a lot. The background is hardly as detailed as an Edwardian illustration, but I think that's better. It's suits your more abstract characters. The texture only being on the background brings out the characters more. You may want to look at Ivan Bilibin for someone who does detailed, yet simply coloured backgrounds.

No problem.)
Btw, in some ways it's nice that there are not many Redwall fans. In fandom includes many people it can become... bad in some way. And Redwall... for me it's really canny ^w^
