Description In advanced drawing my Prof gave a slide lecture featuring work done by previous students... Because he's been there for 30+ years he had a lot of work to choose from, and so you know the 20 slides he picks are gonna be the cream of the crop... but damn... they were amazing. It made me feel bad because I have been slacking off a little bit and kinda "going through the steps" instead of really thinking about what Im doing. Sooo.... here is my answer. This is probably the most intense contour drawing Ive done, definitely the most intense of a face. Here it happens to be my face. Color is added with Guoache. I thought it would be nice to use a color to add some shadows, but not cover up the contour, which is what this drawing is about.

This picture is probably slightly larger than the actual drawing.

it seems like every artist has his or her opinion on what contour drawing is. youll never find one correct answer. itll vary. as long as you have fun . focus on the line and not the value....if you pick up your pen or pencil when a line ends to start another on... does it really matter? I think not! nice drawing.

Oh my gosh, does contour mean you never lift your pencil?

Oh. What's contour then? I looked it up and it says you don't lift up the pencil.

it seems to have varying definitions depending on who you talk to. The definition I was taught was that contour is like an outline, but also on inner forms. So, for this image, whenever I saw a plane change I followed the line the intersecting planes created.

thats a 'pretty good' definition of contour, though I completely disagree with the suggestion they make that it is a beginners subject. I think contour drawings are actually more difficult than drawings with value. When you include value, and color, etc, you start to be able to fudge stuff slightly and nobody notices. But man... when you ONLY use pure line to make a drawing, if you screw up slightly it is instantly readable. *shrugs* just my opinion on the subject (biased as it is)

I love your art. Many of your drawings remind me of classical drawings with a modern edge. A definite fave!
