This sort of thing is why I love deviantArt. Seeing the work of other artists and learning from what they do.
I use new layers, but I NEVER would have thought of putting color in the background! I also select certain pieces as well. that is very tedious.

This is a really great skin tutorial I've flipped through a lot that just use the picture and say things without showing you what tool they are talking about. Or just pictures and no words at all.
