Description Here's a collection of sketches I started since the day I brought home my Surface pro. I made myself a deal that if I shell out the cash for this machine, I would do at least one sketch a day.

Now that I have a reliable computer, I'll get back to doing things for Danger Vision. Super Death Face is being reworked at the moment, so the site will finally get an update whenever we get chapter 1 figured out.

As for the daily sketches, I'll start updating my tumblr daily and dumping collections here on dA.

See ya!

Should I get a Surface Pro 1 4GB For drawing?

That's what I have been using exclusively since February to do all of my drawing, comics, and videos. So I think it's a good machine. 4gb isn't a lot of ram by today's standards, but I still get by. I would say the main reason I use this over my Cintiq 12wx is that the screen's colors are more accurate and is actually bright. The portability is nice too since I can draw on the couch instead of being binded to the office. If only the stylus was as accurate as my Cintiq...

At any rate it all depends on your budget. If you're a cheapskate like me, then the surface pro 1 will be amazing. But if you have money to burn, then go for a pro 2 or even 3. Or a Cintiq companion if you're absolutely rich

In closing, I love this little machine. And if you have a couple extra bills, go for that battery keyboard. I imagine it makes things even more awesome (I don't have one of them.)

Awesome! You see I only have about 600$ to work with do you think I should get this or a laptop with a wacom?

Depends on how mobile you need to be. If you're always needing to draw on the go, then go with the Surface. But if you stay working in your own studio, I'd go with a regular tablet and get a really big monitor. $600 bucks offers a lot of wiggle room, so I'd shop around and try things out first. Do you have a friend or a microsoft store around Β to give it a test run? I think even best buy still has Surface pro 2s still on display for customers to doodle around on.

Last note, though, the Surface's screen is a non-textured glass, so it's like drawing on ice. Something that has some getting used to. You'll also want to get yourself a bluetooth mouse for precise menu clicks since the resolution is so high on this thing. Makes the tiny menus hard to tap.

And no matter how much you calibrate, there's noticeable drift around the edges with the stylus. especially the top right corner.

I'm not bashing this thing. I absolutely love it. It was $600 at the time that I bought it and I think you can find it for around $350 now.Β

Anywho, lemme know what you end up doing. I'm pretty interested!

BTW, your gallery has some pro-ass looking shit in it. Keep it up!

Those sketches look great! Have you done anything more than sketch with the Surface Pro yet? I'm thinking about getting one as a Cintiq alternative

I haven't had the time to do anything other than sketch on it, but I'm sure it should do fine ink and color-wise once you get used to it. If you don't already have a Cintiq, then the surface should make an alright alternative with the added bonus of portable digital drawing. I have a Cintiq 12wx on my desk and it still feels way better than the surface. It could be a size thing, or maybe I just got spoiled by my Cintiq's stylus. the pen that comes with the surface is the size of a normal pen, and the screen is a non textured glass, so it feels like you're drawing on slick ice. I bought a Penabled stylus from Amazon since I can use my cintiq and Bamboo nibs in it (the Surface's stylus usues a different nib size.) I jammed the felt nib in the new stylus, and itelled a little with the texturless screen.

If you have money to burn, you might want to go with the Cintiq companion. Otherwise, spend under half for a first gen Surface. Either way, you'll have to deal with this awful Windows 8.

Thanks! As long as the Windows 8 doesn’t hinder the art experience I’d be fine with it ruining the other aspects. I currently have an Intuos and a MacBook Pro but am tired of drawing without looking. I just want to know that I’m buying the Pro to do actual art on, not just sketching. I heard getting a Bamboo Feel Stylus improves the drawing experience on the Surface.

I thought about getting the Bamboo feel, but ultimately decided against it because it didn't have an eraser on the flip side. It's really hard to find a penabled stylus that's as big as an intuos pen with two rocker buttons and an eraser. The only one I could find that would most likely be the best pen for drawing (and compatible with penabled screens) is on the wacom site, but is constantly "Not in stock."

But hey, lemme know if you end up getting a pro. We could be Surface bros!

Thanks! I'm trying to see if I can get my hands on the Surface Pro 2, otherwise I'll cop the original if it goes on sale again. Its already deeply discounted though so I may just snag it before they run out of stock.

Btw, I feel you on the lack of motivation to sketch (although you are still far more prolific than I.) I just started doing art again after years and now I'm stuck in a rut again and haven't sketched in a month. I'm hoping some new gear will inspire me :/

And the verdict on the machine is?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nasakii In reply to SkipperWing [2014-02-25 03:34:48 +0000 UTC]

Mixed. It feels like it's almost a cintiq. Almost. It might be the size or the smooth glass screen, but it just doesn't feel the same. On the plus side, the colors are accurate and the screen is bright (coming from a cintiq 12wx user.) I'm not going to worry about my colors being off anymore, so that's good.Β

Also, I haven't drawn anything in months, so any negative feelings, drawing wise could possibly be chalked up as me being rusty and wanting to blame something for my crappyness.

One thing's for sure, though - I'm really not digging this Windows 8.
