A pikas work is never done. They live high on the alpine tundra and do not hibernate. They spend the short summer months constantly harvesting grasses. They use these grasses to turn into hay and live off of during the long brutal winter. It's pretty crazy to watch these little guys. Working literally all day. Running from the rocks to the grass, taking these bundles of grass to their winter storage spot. They are not that easy to get a photo of though. Pika are tiny, fast and very skittish. I sat still on a rock for about an hour and a half before I captured this one.

I loved watching these little critters on The Life of Mammals (or was it Planet Earth? I forget).
Great capture, well worth the hour and a half I'd say.

Either this is a hell of a crop from 12 mp or you intentionally size down before you post. Can I ask how far away you were from this little guy? They've never come closer to me than 20'.

Wow, that's really close, you're very lucky. You're using a 5D though yeah? Isn't the average file size on that a lot larger than 700 X 470? That's the only reason I assumed the image was cropped. But remarkable sharpness, you must really love that 300. P.s. Thanks for the reply.

you lucky s.o.b.
lol, these guys are incredibly hard to find and capture. Its on my want list...
its funny how we always get the animal the other doesnt, ie weasels, wolves, ect.
A recent report suggested that global warming is wrecking havoc on there population.

whats funny is.. i sat on this rock for like 2 hours waiting for them... after i got this shot i put on my wide angle lens and moved up the mountain a bit to take a landscape shot at sunset.. and just as i change lenses a weasel came out of the rocks and posed in perfect light! i was so bummed i had just changed my lens!

believe it or not the G9 was about three and a half feet from him, my feet were on the edge of the stream bed and the camera half way up the bank next to a tree stump he was hiding in.
