it really was interesting reading. I never even new coyotes crossbred. I used to hear them when I lived in Southern CA alot at nite and I knew people who lost small dogs to them. I never did see one though. Fantastic shot!!

Hi Kelly, thank you. it was a long time before I was able to get some good shots of these critters... this has been a super year for coyote pics !

I've never seen a coyote that red... I thought it was a coy-dog at first. Then I read your reply to =Iamidaho 's comment
It does look more like a dog cross than a wolf cross, though... maybe it was a larger dog? That got eaten afterwards? XD
Hmm... we may never know for sure...
Whatever it happens to be, that's a great shot! I love the position of its ears! It makes me feel like giving it a hug, then I remember that it can rip me to pieces... XD

Hi Soyrwoo, this is the same one I saw 2 weeks ago, but never got any good pics of.. and the ears are a great way for me to keep track of this one through the next couple of years... maybe the young of this will have the same trait

interesting coyote factoids! I was thinking how different it looked, too. But I love his expression! (We've got them competing in the howl department with foxes
but I haven't seen them...)

Hi Ruth, thanks... it's strange but since we had the coyotes move into the area I haven't seen a red fox anymore.. almost like the coyotes have hunted them out or pushed them out of the area. I miss the red and Grey foxes... been 3 years since I've seen either one

I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case! But how sad
We had a den of 4 grey kits under the garden shed when we moved into our home this past April. the family moved on after a few weeks but I still occationally see one around - more often smell one a bit skunkish!

Great shot, very very diffrent looking form the coyotes in the Yellowstone area.
I would not be suprised if this was a hybrid coy-dog

Hi Nathan, we don't have any Hybrids out this way...The eastern coyote will have nothing to do with a domesticated dog.. wicked enemies. However what we are now seeing is a cross between the very rare eastern red wolf and the coyote. so this maybe one of those versions... most of the coyotes I see are a darker brown or gray colored. this one is very different and just showed up this year .

Thanks that's very interesting to know. I was going to say it looked like it had some husky in him, but maybe its wolf. Coyote have a lot of variety its interesting the differences in coats and features you can find in even a small region. Out here the opposite is true, coyotes and wolves are bitter enemeys but dogs have been caught in a few one night stands with the coyote lady folk.

out here most dog and coyote encounters end up with the dog being eaten !
