Description Small pencil drawing, 6x7.5" on Strathmore 80lb paper. It's been a long time since I've worked traditionally... I miss it.

My foliage kinda sucks though.

I think that this would look amazing as a stone carving, about locket sized.

I don't exactly know why but I am smitten by this sketch. I love the bones, the smoke, how the tree goes beyond the border. I love it all :c)

I keep seeing the image of a horse, where the hanging lamp/burner is it's pupil, the far right branch of the tree is it's ear, and it's looking to our left...

Trees are great! See several dryads in there. Nice lamp.

For all that there are bleached bones and bare-branched, knobbly trees, this is really registering as peaceful and quietly beautiful to me. Very elegant.

Simple and beautiful. I like this your cross-hatch technique you're using.

But what I really love is the vigil lights you hang from places in these pictures. They're very familiar to me (since they're common in Eastern Orthodox churches: we call them ฮบฮฑฮฝฯ„ฮฎฮปฮนฮฑ) and therefore very evocative. I think they're among the elements that made me connect to your work.

As for the foliage, I don't think its problem is that it sucks. It mostly needs a little rhythm. Foliage is very random, but in stylised pictures like this it probably needs to be a little neater in its arrangement. (In a more realistic sketch it would probably work just fine as it is.)

I wonder if your religious connection makes you interpret them differently than I do. Obviously I've appropriated them for my own uses, but for me they're quite ominous and funerary.

Thanks for the advice with the foliage--I think you're right! I need to be more deliberate about it.

I'm personally not religious, but it's still a cultural connection. I've worked in churches (my mother is an iconographer and mural painter, and I help her out sometimes), hence the familiarity. But I could also see them as funerary, although probably not ominous, because we also place such lights in graves: I'll always light one when I visit my grandparent's graves, for example, and I associate that with a positive feeling. Greek cemeteries at night are filled with such small lights; you could almost imagine them as lingering souls.

How did you start drawing, them, by the way? I'm curious.

Just an aesthetic connection, similar to my infatuation with dead birds. I like smoke, I like hanging lanterns. There's something conceptually poetic about them... and they're also compositionally fun, hahah.

Foliage IS a bitch. But I like this little vinette! I want an incense burner in a tree, too...

Classy. It feels like the second or third page to a "wind in the willows" type book.
