Description
Whewβ¦ okay. This section is very long, and a little intense. I realize I am simultaneously telling you to choose a unified palette, AND throw color all over the place. Itβs definitely the most difficult and advanced section of the entire tutorial.Import it into a program with a color picker, and go nuts. Compare the swatches, look at how the colors, saturation, and values changes. It will help, promise.
_
Skin tones: how to achieve a range of skin tones (light, medium, dark, and fantasy) using the basic formula laid out in Section I.
This tutorial is very extensive and will be publish in four parts. If you just found it, please be sure to start with Section I!
COMING SOON:
_
This tutorial uses mostly digital work as examples, but the theory behind it should apply to ALL mediums. But of course it goes without saying that this is hardly the end-all-be-all of skin painting tutorials. Just my way of thinking about it.
Also-- this should go without saying, but I will say it anyway: the ONLY WAY to learn how to paint/draw anything well, let alone realistically, is to STUDY COLOR THEORY AND FORM. All the stuff I blather on about in this tutorial is meaningless unless you take the initiative to learn the fundamentals of color and figure drawing.
Please, any questions, concerns, criticisms, etc: comment below.

AhhH~ Fabulous tutorial, this is so helpful, even for a beginner who has no idea where to start like me!
The details and tips you've included here are not found in other tutorials I've seen on here, making this the best skin tutorial I believe I've seen~
I would love to see more on unnatural skin colors~ what you've put here is great for someone who is attempting a character with almost pure white skin (it's got a little green to it) -but I would love to see more >w<

I had just about lost my mind trying to paint skin.Β Everything turned out washed out and dead looking.Β Then I found your fantastic tutorial, and I am SO HAPPY with the improvement I've been able to make!Β I was was afraid of saturated and dark shadows, and hesitant to mix up the color choices.Β This really inspired me to move outside the comfort zone and I could not be more pleased with the progress!Β Thank you so much!!Β (I've posted the WIP before & after on my tumblr, with a link to your tutorials, if you are curious!)

Thank you so much for posting this, it's wonderful. I've been looking for ways to realistically color skin with the colors chosen for me as well (I have no knowledge on colors) I'm a noob when it comes to coloring and plan to take classes, now with your tutorial I can prepare myself beforehand and have an inside look. Faved, and watched!

This is so cool! Painting skin has been my prob for a long time now and this one helped me materialize my goal to paint realistic people. I've been a fanatic of Da Vinci and all other famous painters but I can't get myself to buy those real painting stuffs so maybe I'll just stick to digital painting.
Thanks for the tutorial! It was worthwhile.
