Thanks for this, it really helped me get to grips with the concept of layering colour and tone.
This is my first attempt with actually 'painting' on the layers.

Awesome descriptions on the brush settings you used. This always gets missed in tutorials. I'm looking for more in depth techniques for painting. For example I still have problems with getting different textures for characters or clothing. And color values don't always turn out the way I want.

you are amazing, I can't stop staring at the picture at how real it is? if I saw it just even a little bit further from my computer I would think its just a photo?

this tutorial is very helpful, but I know I won't be able to follow it with ease my blending tools often give me grief

lithriel In reply to xLady-Mizu [2012-04-04 15:39:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for your comment. I wish I had time to redo this picture as it's not my favorite and I see all kinds of things I want to do change but it's still a good way for people to see how I work.

If you have any questions about the brushes let me know. I don't know about other programs but I know photoshop fairly well.

I -love-...I cannot even begin to tell you, how much I loved reading this thing. You do what nobody else really seems to do, and that's actually explain what you're doing. Everyone else keeps their tutorials generalized, which doesn't help when you're trying to actually learn their style of painting. You are instead very specific. And I mean specific. I love that. I like tutorials that are specific and go step-by-step-by-step on how the process is done.

goblincreations [2012-02-18 11:34:54 +0000 UTC]

i love your tutorial. but i have a question when you start coloring is each individual color on a seperate layer?

ive been trying to find a way to make my picture come out like this. im a real noob with photoshop and im using photoshop elements 5.0 ive been doing each and every single color on a seperate layer but the more tutorials i find the more im questioning how people are doing this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lithriel In reply to goblincreations [2012-02-18 17:18:34 +0000 UTC]

No no no! The only thing on a separate layer is the background color. I draw directly on my line art actually. Sometimes I start on the layer above but shortly after merge them. I use photoshop like traditional medium by painting on my drawing. I don't know how anyone else does it, but that's my way.

goblincreations In reply to lithriel [2012-02-18 22:26:41 +0000 UTC]

ok that makes more sense. i wasnt understanding how people were doing these amazing things but now i see. i was running into a hitch when i started using tools like liquify and blur sometimes because i was using a ton of seperate layers for everything. so ill try out on just one layer

lithriel In reply to voidn0ise [2012-01-05 16:33:16 +0000 UTC]

A tablet with the drivers properly installed is a big help. Developing a steady hand can take some time though. Just keep doing it and you will get better!

voidn0ise In reply to lithriel [2012-01-06 01:56:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I just got an Intuos 4 for Christmas, I wanna get insanely good like a lot of the people I see on dA, my mind just can't wrap around the fact that people actually paint these with like perfect color blending and realism xD. Seem's so challenging! I suppose practice does make perfect haha.

lithriel In reply to voidn0ise [2012-01-06 17:36:05 +0000 UTC]

Fun fun. I had to upgrade when my old tablet died a month and a half ago. If you are just seriously getting into art I suggest finding some local classes in traditional medium. It's taken me a lifetime of constant drawing with an "I want to be an artist when I grow up" mentality, a 4 year degree in art, and a couple of years of digital painting experience to get where I am today. Don't expect it to happen overnight. I started when I was 3. I'm 26 right now and I haven't stopped drawing since. I have years more to learn. Had I tried to learn in digital medium to start with I wouldn't be the artist I am today.

voidn0ise In reply to lithriel [2012-01-06 23:45:26 +0000 UTC]

That's insane. Yeah I figure it'll take a long time, so I'm gonna keep working on it and trying to improve. I'm not really in a great position to be able to take classes, but I'll definitely start reading up on some books about drawing anatomy and proportions and things of the sort. Hopefully that'll expand my artistic knowledge and help me slowly improve.
