Description
Whewβ¦ okay. This section is very long, and a little intense. I realize I am simultaneously telling you to choose a unified palette, AND throw color all over the place. Itβs definitely the most difficult and advanced section of the entire tutorial.Import it into a program with a color picker, and go nuts. Compare the swatches, look at how the colors, saturation, and values changes. It will help, promise.

Skin tones: how to achieve a range of skin tones (light, medium, dark, and fantasy) using the basic formula laid out in Section I.
This tutorial is very extensive and will be publish in four parts. If you just found it, please be sure to start with Section I!
COMING SOON:
_
This tutorial uses mostly digital work as examples, but the theory behind it should apply to ALL mediums. But of course it goes without saying that this is hardly the end-all-be-all of skin painting tutorials. Just my way of thinking about it.
Also-- this should go without saying, but I will say it anyway: the ONLY WAY to learn how to paint/draw anything well, let alone realistically, is to STUDY COLOR THEORY AND FORM. All the stuff I blather on about in this tutorial is meaningless unless you take the initiative to learn the fundamentals of color and figure drawing.
Please, any questions, concerns, criticisms, etc: comment below.

I really like how you've focused on building realistic skin starting with undertones and building upon that foundation... this is wonderful!

Thank you for making this. I'm not a artist, but I have many dark skinned characters and it's really hard to find someone who can color them right. I will be sure to link this tutorial to anyone I commission who is having trouble with the tones.

Thank you for a very well written tutorial that applies equally to digital and traditional media. I particularly like the fact you've also included advice on fantasy and undead skin tones as well.

This is such a great tutorial. So many skin tutorials only cover one type of skin tone, the "default white" but you have pretty much the whole spectrum. Not only this but it is so well explained and very helpful.
As an unrelated note i really appreciate the fact that you painted skin-tones matched ethnic faces rather than doing a default white face different skin tone ie the features of the people portray ethnicity instead of just relying on skin tone.

Thanks, it was one of the reasons I chose to do the tutorial in the first place. At the time everything was either Paint a white person! or Paint a black person! I'm actually in the middle of re-hauling and expanding this section, and I've focused on making the faces even more ethnically accurate. With middle-toned skin in particular, it's the features more than the color that shows their heritage.

What a beautifully executed and simultaneously useful tutorial! (And I don't think "use a unified palette" and "throw color all over the place" are mutually exclusive in the least. )
Honestly, I added this one to my faves MOSTLY because it's just so lovely! [link]
