A guide on how to make a plush friendly My Little Pony OC.
I wanted to make this guide to give people an idea on what elements of an MLP oc can be difficult or impossible to plush. When designing an OC, or wanting to get one made as a plush, there are things to avoid or minimise.

This guide is based on personal experience and not all information may be true for every plush maker.

Oh it would be a good talking point, I'm thinking of bringing some show and tell, some of my first attempts at plushies, they were really terrible but fun to laugh at. I look forward to seeing you there, and getting to see which ponies you bring along!

I'm reading this here, and I'm wondering if this pony right here sta.sh/01ar6vx9el4w, is too much to plush? What would you say?

NazFX In reply to Dancing-Angel-221B [2014-07-24 05:29:01 +0000 UTC]

No she's quite fine. The only abnormal thing you'll have to pay extra for is the blue hooves. I'm assuming you'd be fine with her having a regular pony body though? If you want her with an alicorn/lanky body you'd be paying a fair bit more depending on the plushmaker

No she's pretty fine to plush really ^_^. Not too many spikes, not too many colours. The only extra expense would be the sparkles

I have one question v w v

I'm still designing my one, I would love her to have a tri colored sweater, do you think that's just pushing the boundaries? Its pure white, with a few raven black stripes, blue between some of them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NazFX In reply to a-shii [2014-06-14 10:55:43 +0000 UTC]

Clothing is really dependant on the artist. There are allot of artists that wont do clothing, and some that will. It all depends on what artists you want to limit yourself to. Tri coloured is no biggie, but just consider who will make clothing and who wont.

Wow this is really helpful and ill definitely take a look at it if i ever need to commission someone for a plushie in the future (which i plan on doing XD)! Thanks so much for making this guide! After looking at it, I think my oc is ok, but I feel like the choppiness of her mane might be a pain to do. Would you mind telling me what you think? Here's my ref for her sta.sh/01znreb4401w

Of course i wouldn't mind it being toned down if it would make it easier though, but i'd still love to know what you think

NazFX In reply to Lunariii [2014-06-09 23:50:26 +0000 UTC]

While her mane is spiky I certainly think it's do-able. Not too many to drive anyone crazy ^_^.

its why when i was looking for a plushie for my oc i skimmed down the details and such because i know it is very hard work with this kind of stuff (close friends doing plushies and sewing in general+gramma teaching me the basics) im glad something like this exists because i know alot of people who ask for plushies over complicate things and make things more difficult for the person they are commissioning too (and sometimes arent satisfied with the results because of certain minor details not there)
thank you for posting this its gonna help alot for not just plushie makers but also pony artists like me (Minor pony artists) with picky commissioners<3
sorry for the long rambling i just wanted to praise you for creating this

How do you order a Fabric Swatch? I went on the website and didn't know where to look. I found the fabrics though, I love the colors!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NazFX In reply to RandomPandamau5 [2014-04-24 23:01:06 +0000 UTC]

You can either order the swatches individually by colour, or order a whole set (very recommended!). I think you have to go into another category to find them though.. umm I think it was misc items or something like that. It is hard to find from memory XD

Wow, never thought the hoof markings would be such a pain. :/ good thing Blaze is the only one who has them.

And then hen there is my unicorn who has the gradient....haha wish this popped up as I was making her. Would've saved me some trouble. Great guide here Naz! :3

EstheticArt In reply to ??? [2014-04-16 06:44:02 +0000 UTC]

theres nothing I hate more than when people make their OC really powerful, or really complicated...
maybe its just me cause I prefer simple designs, and clothing included my OCs usually have 2-4 colors.
Your OCs are lovely, by the way ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NazFX In reply to EstheticArt [2014-04-16 08:15:05 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean. I don't mind relatively complex designs, as long as they are done in good taste

EstheticArt In reply to NazFX [2014-04-16 14:22:45 +0000 UTC]

Me too, It's just the ridiculous overboard ones that I can't stand
or when they make their OC an alicorn/princess/prince
or ship an OC with the mane six

ComputerDeathglare [2014-04-16 01:50:34 +0000 UTC]

I'm so glad my main OCs are relatively simple. The one I am considering plushing, Pyro, would only have problems with her mane, but it's very similar to Lyra, so maybe not, and her only accessory is a collar, something I could get a pet store if the plsuh maker couldn't do it.

But I'm rambling. Good guide, I shall bear this in mind.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NazFX In reply to ComputerDeathglare [2014-04-16 02:06:47 +0000 UTC]

Collars are a great accessory, cause as you said, a small dogs collar will usually fit

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ComputerDeathglare In reply to NazFX [2014-04-16 02:09:55 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I usually like putting children's necklaces or dog/cat collars onto my plushies to accessorize my plushies. Infant socks work, too, and look adorable.

My Dawn Streaks seems normal, and I found minky that matches her colors almost perfectly~ <3
I don't know how hard her cutie mark would be, but it's all one piece with no outline, so I hope it would be okay. Though her mane and tail are stripy.

I haven't commissioned anyone for a plushie of her yet, but I think if I did she wouldn't be much of a challenge c:

I like to imagine Chatter wouldn't be a huge pain to make, though his very messy mane may be a bit frustrating, but it's hair, I'm very okay if someone I had commissioned made it a bit more simple.

I'm glad that Cheese Sandwich showed up, because now it's easier to explain how I think Chatter should look physically. Though I suppose that'd be an annoying complication, eh?
