A guide on how to make a plush friendly My Little Pony OC.
I wanted to make this guide to give people an idea on what elements of an MLP oc can be difficult or impossible to plush. When designing an OC, or wanting to get one made as a plush, there are things to avoid or minimise.
This guide is based on personal experience and not all information may be true for every plush maker.

This guide is very helpful for making a budget friendly plush. It is great to have tips for creating a plush that will not cost as much, and will probably be accepted by a wide variety of plush makers. However, this guide is also a bit severe.
If someone wants a pony with a very complicated spiky or curly mane, they are willing to pay extra for it, and a plush maker is willing and able to make it, then it is fine. Quite a lot of spikes or curls do not always “add nothing” to a plush. It's the same case with body markings, a very complicated pattern can sometimes add a lot to a plush. Example: fireflytwinkletoes.deviantart.…
Every plush maker is free to accept or deny whatever commissions they want, but commissioners should also be free to design spiky, huge maned, complicated ponies if they want to. If they become agitated or belligerent when their request is denied or it is explained that the plush would cost a great deal more, they are being obnoxious and should probably be blocked.

I agree, I never said that you couldn't have these features, I just advised to be aware of their additional costs . Much of this is personal opinion as I stated and does not stand for everyone.

What a great guide! I think everyone who wants a plushie made should take a look at this. It definitely helps explain alot, especially why the price is high on the complex OC's.

Well going through the list I think the biggest problems a plush of my character would be her mane/tail and cutie mark. Aside from that she's a standard unicorn with Pinkie Pie type eyes.

Thanks for this guide Naz. After reading this I looked at a few of my OC's and only found maybe... 2-7 out of 16-30 different OC's/FC's/Unused Characters I have that are plushie friendly. maybe I should set some up for adoption... just not a thought, not a guarentee.... :/

reading through this makes me feel a little better i kept my pony pretty simple(except her hair, oops) dead-kittens3.deviantart.com/g… xD
i wanted her to fit well in the pony world but be able to hold her own as a character. i always wanted to commission a plush of my pony, i thought of trying myself but the curls scared me off this info goes the same with artist who draw, an overly detailed character is soooo time consuming, and if your doing a traditional material a lot more material will get used up. a lot of people havent learned that less is indeed more when it comes to a character.

This is so true! I find super over detailed characters annoying to do. And some people with super detailed characters are 'really' specific on the details. Like things have to be exactly a certain way. Although my character is has a unique hair/tail style and detailed cutie mark, she's not as complicated as some of the other ponies out there.
And I hate scribble spikes...

yesyesyes! IF you do happen to have a detailed character i think you should be considerate of the artist and let them dumb it down a little(like does your OC really need exactly 10 stripes on her tail, or will she be okay with 4 or 3) . But for some reason the more detailed the OC the stricter the owner is.

stardust-4ever In reply to DivineKitten [2014-03-29 02:31:30 +0000 UTC]
So you've noticed that too? Cause I've noticed detail OC owners will usually have a 'list.' Things like mane and tail must have x colors in this order, mane has x amount of spikes, they have earring/ bracelet/ whatever on right side, and some other accessory on the left, legs have coloring at different heights, and the list goes on.
And what's up with ocs that have a super complicated outfit with like 50 details? Am I the only one that thinks they don't plan on drawing it often (if ever again)? Because I know I wouldn't.
I'd be happy if someone just gets the colors and mane on my oc semi-right, lol. Every time I look at my oc I keep thinking her mane looks like the previous mlp cartoons' manes. Except with less 'curls'

DivineKitten In reply to stardust-4ever [2014-03-29 03:37:14 +0000 UTC]
well i am glad i am not the only one who has noticed xD
I Think thats exactly it. They draw them once and then thats the end of that OCs personal life with them, after that they are in the hands of different artists. They should try to draw them over and over again by memory and see how much stuff they remember was added to the characters. maybe a light bulb will click xD i use coloured pencils and it can be very difficult to match a pencil to a digital color. so getting one of those super detailed OC's with strict owners can be nerve wrecking at times. i try my absolute best but all i ask of them is to expect some things will be changed or lost. but its still the same character even without the hundred piercings xD
i am super lenient when it comes to even my most strict OC, the pony Sock Hop. she has a strict "vintage rule". but if someone were to draw her using a hip shiny cell phone i wouldnt mind, as long as her hair is pink and her body is tanish or something (i really have no idea what her offical coat colur is yet so tht cant even mess that up lol) thats all i ask xD i like your OC, i like ponies that can fit into the pony world and not look out of place. cute and simple!

stardust-4ever In reply to DivineKitten [2014-03-29 04:22:28 +0000 UTC]
Thank you about my OC! I try to keep her simple but unique, because I have to draw her again since she's not a one-time drawing. And I totally understand the color pencil thing! I've colored my pony with color pencils and her colors are really hard to get exact same as digital. Although I absolutely love her colors in my recent color pencil, and actually like it better then the digital colors, lol. Anyone who is strict about colors from a digital image going to traditional should be given a set of media and told "Well lets see you get an exact match." Then they will see how hard it is.
Lol on your pony losing her horn. I love magic too much to lose the horn xD Your pony Sock Hop is so cute, her mane is sooo pretty. I also really love the bow on her tail, it makes me think of the G1 ponies. Your drawings are amazing by the way!

wow this is an old post, i am so sorry it took me sooo long to reply to you! my gosh its going on two months old!
But your welcome! i always appreciate a nice simple, yet adorable OC pony The Oc's i make usually end up being a one time only character but thats only because i dont find time to draw them, but if i was told to draw one of my OCs from 3 years ago i could draw them easily without a reference, so i guess thats good xD Digital colouring is so lucky because you can get every characters colours right xD im sure with more practice coloured pencils can do the same...lots of practice.
Well at the time there was a huge abundance of unicorn and pagasi OC's and i was drawing a lot of them, so i made my pony lose her horn lmao. Im so happy you like how she looks x3 I did give her the bow tail in honor of the G1 ponies, i'm glad someone noticed! I personally love them a little more then the G4's, because i grew up with them

stardust-4ever In reply to DivineKitten [2014-05-02 05:45:15 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I grew up with the G1 ponies too. My favorite was Wind Whistler! Can't seem to help myself, I like the smart ones.
And most of my OCs look the same xD I can't draw curls or wavy hair, so they basically all end up similar looking. So there's no problem with drawing them again years later. It might help that they're all have really simple designs.
It's true that you have a better chance of getting colors 'right' digitally. But there's a certain quality to traditional that can't be replaced.

DivineKitten In reply to stardust-4ever [2014-05-06 04:36:24 +0000 UTC]
thats funny Wind Whistler was my favourite as well xD i think i liked her because she was actually smart and stood out.most ponies blended together.
I find curly hair pretty difficult to do, its very complex once you decide you want to do detailed strands, if your making it like pinkie pies hair thats not so bad xD Looking back at my old OC's that all have straight hair but one has beach waves maybe if i redesign them i'll change it up rofl.
Thats true, i think the "messy" quality adds to traditional arts appeal

Cool, thanks for taking the time to make this and think it through! I'm sure you deal with tons of people that request commissions and you're not able to do them because of some of these problems. I can definitely see how all of these (what seem like small details) details add up.
