Description
The beating heart of veri'khan civilization, the gas giant Pavitir and the multiple worlds which orbit it are bitterly contended by the three supranational organizations vying for control of their species' future and place in the galaxy, most of all on the veri'khan homeworld of Verimin itself. A super-jovian giant orbiting in the habitable zone of the K-type Sekimu, a distant secondary to the F-type/D-type primary pair making up the center of the trinary system, Pavitir is thought to have migrated beyond the frost line in the outer Sekimu system some 3 billion years ago, capturing Verimin as its largest moon on a retrograde orbit and leaving the shattered remains of at least two large terrestrials behind to form the Oumika Belt and Teyka Belt marking the outer edge of Sekimu's habitable zone.
Originally explored and settled nearly five thousand years ago in their early atomic age by a united effort encompassing all veri'khan nations, peoples, and cultures, the hopes for peace and unification would break down only decades later when their at-the-time severely overpopulated homeworld with nearly 48 billion citizens was depleted of natural resources critical in food production due to unsustainable growth and disruptive industrial practices; as a result, their most powerful states along the equatorial band leveraged their disproportionate influence over the joint space program to secure colonization options and vital off-world habitation for themselves, largely abandoning their less powerful compatriots to their fate on a garden world facing widespread desertification, failing agriculture, water scarcity, and a dying ecosystem. Soon thereafter, the Union of Nations was formally disbanded after the countries forming its security council engaged in open warfare for the first time in over a century, abandoning the Founding Charter in a bid to secure and develop their offworld colonization programs as quickly as possible, desperate to establish self-sufficient settlements to house critical government functions and as many of their citizens as possible before the now-imminent global catastrophe on Verimin. Although at the time lifeless terrestrial moons only a fraction the size of the homeworld, Kimuvi, Uvibam, and Ytimau became the most priced real estate thanks to each being large enough to hold thin, but significant, atmospheres of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, as well as having deposits of many life-critical elements to their biochemistry such as phosphorous, sulfur, silica, water ice, and various carbon-based organic compounds. After the first permanent outposts grew into cities, millions upon millions were evacuated and international relations between the superpowers started stabilizing as their feverish development in spaceflight had drastically lowered launch and transit costs to the point that even the "middle powers" of the homeworld (those which had managed to avoid colonization by their larger neighbors but nonetheless remained relatively small) were able to seriously consider founding their own offworld development and space habitats further out, mostly in the nearby Oumika Belt, and the global elite was able to relocate to the newly established territories regardless of their origin.
While this led to a newfound sense of peace and security for the various settlements around the planetary system and those influential, fortunate, or wealthy enough to reside there, the situation on Verimin itself was very different: with much of their leadership gone, global trade ceasing outright, and the ongoing famines getting worse with each failed harvest, the social order in many countries broke down, leading others to take advantage of the situation by invading collapsing neighbors to secure what arable land, fresh water sources, oceanic coastlines, and medical supplies they could before running out themselves. This came to a head in 2452BCC when the Meiklu Republic broke the long-standing political, social, and cultural taboo around the weaponization of atomic energy by launching a premeditated nuclear strike on the twenty eight largest population centers of the Ygilam Coast to secure the remaining fishery stocks; wiping out over half of the Ygilam population in less than half an hour, but facing no meaningful consequences for their actions. Although facing statements of condemnation from what remained of the international community, the complete absence of retaliation, diplomatic or military, served only to further embolden the remaining states with atomic energy or space programs, with a further fifty nine regional disputes over resources escalating into nuclear conflict within the century, being established in the eyes of both the populace and remaining leadership as the ultimate winning hand. While the now largely space-bound global superpowers would undertake politically motivated token humanitarian efforts to lessen the worst effects and stabilize their regional allies, trading food and weapons for fleeting obedience, the situation remained largely the same for another three hundred years until the population of Verimin had declined to around 24 billion, cut in half from its previous peak due to a combination of population control policies, relocation, starvation, and conflict. Finally able to support their populations once again, the remaining homeworld-bound nations quickly grew as resentful and distrustful of their former allies, who had taken advantage of the turmoil to secure their own objectives rather than offer genuine aid even as billions starved, as they already were of each other. At the same time, the colonized moons and asteroid settlements were undergoing a sharp population boom thanks to the high potential birthrates of veri'khan physiology, praised and supported by many of the larger governments looking to outgrow their rivals, but interpreted by nearly everyone else, in particular independent habitats established by minor nations in the outer system, as the hegemonic nations looking for new planets to extend their imperial grasp over and consume. Although the old world powers and nascent colony-nations growing on Kimuvi, Uvibam, and Ytimau were moving towards unification over the next century, motivated in no small part by a desire to reestablish a global system-wide economy and cooperation in the terraformation of Uvibam and Kimuvi, political resistance from the polities of the homeworld, belts, and minor moons who feared economic exploitation grew fierce, with calls for reconciliation and mutual trade being answered by boycotted summits, last-minute port wave-offs for diplomatic and military vessels, and deliberately delayed shipments of industrial goods and terraforming materiel. While the minor powers across the system eventually relented, these suspicions never subsided entirely, returning in force in 2109BCC with the discovery of an ancient starship of alien make, frozen in the ice of one of the moons orbiting Keimut, the largest gas giant orbiting the system primary and only recently explored due to the immense distance of nearly 200 AU between it and Sekimu. This irrefutable proof that the veri'khan are not alone in the universe, or at any rate were not alone 3 million years ago, led to the political relations between the expansionist and conservationist factions growing even fiercer, not helped in the slightest by the evidence that this wreak could be used to reverse-engineer FTL technology and enable their spread even further. Tensions peaked a decade later when the pro-expansion factions had gained a decisive advantage and unification into a new species-wide authority to govern the use and development of FTL technology and interstellar exploration seemed imminent, and for the first time in centuries over three quarters of all veri'khan sovereign states had agreed to an international meeting in Veeli, the largest city on Uvibam, to work out the details of a treaty; as the negotiations became bogged down and several polities across the system expressed their intentions to continue development with or without international support, a radical expansionist faction intending a coup d'etat against the authorities of the Ulook Imperial State, the largest superpower remaining on Verimin, engaged in a colony drop operation directed against Veeli through an officially unaffiliated PMC in an attempt to frame the isolationist movement (which argued that the Ancient monitor ship was proof that their own species had been left alone to evolve by an unknown force which likely held unknowable designs for them should they step out into the dark unprepared for contact) to leverage the chaos to cease control of their own state and maneuver it into a favorable position for controlling all interstellar expansion. While the coup failed due to the Ulook armed forces abiding the presiding party rather than switching sides, the impact nonetheless lead to multiple Uvibam nation-states declaring war on them and refusing any association with them, putting a swift end to all talks of political unity. A year later in 2098BCC, all the speculation and debate of the interstellar situation ended: the Thanavar National Space Agency had completed research and testing of FTL jump technology, launching their first surveyors to all five star systems within range, finding no traces of civilization, no signs of development, and no evidence of life. The discovery that their expectations of encountering a vastly more powerful and ancient civilization had been unfounded, at least for the time being, helped defuse the volatile political situation, with the majority of political powers focusing on exploration and interstellar settlement for the time being, preferring the questions regarding sustainable development, power distribution, and authority at the heart of their civilization lie unanswered for a few decades more rather than undertaking any action that could destroy their fragile peace.
When the unsustainable development that had initially lead to the ecological collapse of the homeworld, overpopulation of the terraformed moons, and harsh exploitation of the minor planets looked to continue only on an interstellar scale after the establishment of the first extrasolar colonies on habitable worlds saw the immediate implementation of similar pro-expansion measures to bring about localized population booms tensions between expansionist and conservationist powers flared up once again in 2063BCC, with protests held across their space proclaiming in hundreds of languages that "the hegemonic imperialists have found a new paradise to consume", a statement made all the more powerful by these newly settled worlds being named after idyllic afterlifes of various veri'khan religions. The response to this political turmoil along the outer system, minor planets, and frontier was immediate: the superstates of the Pavitir planetary system had their governments issue statements of dismissal, while their armed forces were redeployed to the colonies and peripheral powers to stamp out dissent with the Thanavar Equal Nation, seen as the most egalitarian and progressive governing force of their species just years prior, going so far as venting one of their own orbital stations to pacify the local populace. While full-scale war between the colonies and central powers wouldn't break out until 1756BCC, the three intervening centuries were defined by revolts, skirmishes, and terror attacks by pro-democratic groups, and when the independence war finally broke out the central pact only realized when warships from the Colonial Defense Corps, the ad-hoc military branch of the newly established Colonial Sovereignty Alliance, warped in in Pavitir's upper atmosphere to secure control of the strategic gravity well, bringing about a negotiated truce that would only last until the founding of the Homeworld Nations Pact in 1742BCC and immediate resumption of hostilities to "resolve the temporary aberration of colonial authority structures". The resulting Separation War continued until first contact with the Starfarer Ring, at which point the multitude of exploited impoverished nations left behind on the homeworld, Uvibam, and several major extrasolar colonies which had remained uninvolved in the conflict were desperate for change and a source of hope; both of which were offered by the theocratic taenu's Kami'Zech Empire in 1558BCC, while at the same time the venomairie's Sepentin Meritocracy, raptoridean's Supranational Union, and ichtonigian's Anaghor Republics each got involved and brought the conflict to a negotiated end with each faction adopting encompassing environment protection legislation into their constitutions and the D-COR forces remaining in military control over all important FTL transit nodes into their systems.
Each of the inhabited worlds of the veri'khan home system are under severe territorial and state membership disputes by the Colonial Sovereignty Alliance, Verik'Thir Vassals, and the Homeworld Nations Pact, as well as a multitude nations claiming full independence. In addition, Verimin and Ytimau have been delineated demilitarized zones under the direct supervision of the Starfarer Ring's peacekeeping observation corps since the resolution of the Second Rift War in 689CC.
