Description
Janken's look has been a bit inconsistent. So, to try to nail him down a little better, I drew up this "model sheet." Micron pen on plain white paper.Related content

nice drawings, I like how you broke up the body shapes
Β the facial expressions are great, the scrunched up fist face cracked me up

Yeah, that mushy face is something, isn't it? I never could figure out what it meant on Wembley.

i'm not quite sure, IΒ guess it might be a frustrated expression....
animated Janken also looks adorable,
even though the animated spin off was not a good as the original series, your character designs are great

Wembley's "fistface" has been used in circumstances in which he appears fearful or angry. To me, it just does't look like an expression. It looks like the puppeteer made a fist.

have you heard about the upcoming Doozers series?
I've read on Muppet wiki that the Doozers are getting their own spin off series.
*however, it is aΒ different cast so Cotterpin and Wrench are not in it.
*instead of living in doozer dome they live in Doozer creek
* and it is computer animated instead of traditional puppets.

Yes, I saw the footage that was leaked to Youtube begore it was snatched down. It's a different Doozer colony that lives on the surface, and it's all CGI. Last I heard it was slated to be shown in the international market but not in the US. So, just as I couldn't see Fraggle Rock when it first aired because my family didn't have HBO, I won't be able to check this out unless episodes get posted to Youtube.

yeah, i think they are only showing it in the united kingdom.
i havent seen it yet, but the designs are completely different.
i like how they are rebooting the series for a new generation but it bothers me that its CGI instead of puppets, I hope they try to stay true to the original Fraggle rock series.

I don't mind that it's CGI. Jim Henson liked to play with state-of-the-art techniques and technologies. He was always experimenting, and he did a lot of innovating. (With, of course some help from folks like Faz!) He put a CGI character into a series when CGI was just beginning in entertainment. Making a CGI series, when CGI is the most practical way to go about it, is perfectly in keeping with the Henson tradition.
I have a fantasy of a Fraggle Rock movie animated by Pixar. For me the Fraggles will be, first and foremost, puppets. However, Pixar could do them justice, making them move like their original selves, and allow them to bound around and do all the things that Fraggles do without being hampered by the need to hide Silly Creatures. Of course it'll never happen, but it's fun to imagine.

Great model sheet! Janken is your best OC! I love how you finalized and standardized his design with it. Jan is so good, if you were hired by the Jim Henson Company, they would love Jan, Poncle, Sage, and your other OCs and make them canon!

Heh, I'd be pleased as heck if any of 'em turned up in the background of a comic panel! Alas, there's no word on whether Archaia will be publishing any more Fraggle comics.

I hope Archaia does! BTW, I would like you to draw the Fraggle characters (including the Fraggle Five and your OCs, especially Janken, Sage and Poncle) in HergΓ©'s distinctive Tintin style. Do you like Tintin, Kim?

Tintin isn't my things, sorry. I'm fond of the Asterix comics. I have them all in English and many in French.

RunonpuFan In reply to Negaduck9 [2013-03-04 06:03:52 +0000 UTC]
I'm sorry that you aren't into Tintin. However, I want to check out Lucky Luke, because Rene Goscinny, writer for Asterix, wrote Lucky Luke for many years alongside artist Morris.
Back to Janken. The denim jacket makes him who he is, IMO! I also love the smile where his cheek overlaps the eye, and I love his angry look, and the face where his nose goes into his mouth. The theoretical drawing showing how he looks if where in the animated series.

Since the Fraggles were so horribly Flanderized for the animated show, I hate to think of what Janken would be like. He'd either be a flaming queen or a little tag-along.

Negaduck9 In reply to Plaid-F [2012-12-26 17:47:28 +0000 UTC]
However, nothing they could do to Janken would ever be as bad as what they did to Cantus . That really hurt.

Plaid-F In reply to Negaduck9 [2012-12-27 02:14:04 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I have SEEN how he looked!! I've never seen the episode though. I was watching the animated series when it was all up for free streaming on Amazon Prime, but it's not available anymore. Only got through the first four and...
yeah.
Of course, Cantus sounds really weird with anyone but Jim's voice (as I've noticed in all the episodes I've seen in other languages), so I bet it was just as sad in the animated version
π: 0 β©: 1
Negaduck9 In reply to Plaid-F [2012-12-27 02:34:17 +0000 UTC]
Cantus is a problem outside of the original seroes. Not only is he weird and hard to draw on-model; I don't think anyone really knows how to write him. (Sez the person currently writing a fanfic series about him!) All too often they use him as Dear Abby. Um, what? He's a guru, not a therapist!
Some of the animated episodes are epic bad. the way they re-use songs...they turned Just A Dream Away, a song about accepting one's mortality, into a chirpy cooking song for Boober. Pass it On was about replanting an out-of-control flower. And Pukka Pukka Pukka Squeetily Boink, Wembley's signature song, was sung by everyone but Wembley. Oy vey.
And yet I wrote a FR:TAS fanfic. Yes, I have no pride. No shame, either.

Much respect!! Yup. I just love bad things though, so hopefully someday I can marathon the animated series like that Tough Pigs reviewer did! My hero haha
That fic, is it your "Sidebottom Butts In" one?? I have yet to read it
π: 0 β©: 1
Negaduck9 In reply to Plaid-F [2012-12-27 03:34:09 +0000 UTC]
You can get the DVD cheap from Amazon. I did. I wouldn't advise marathonning it; a few a day is all the average mind should be asked to endure.
Yes, "Sidebottom Butts In" is mt FR:TAS fic. I obeted some of the show's conventions: it takes place in an alternate continuity, three acts with spaces for commercials, and I even re-use a song from the series. However, I draw the line at Flanderizing the characters and messing up good songs. In other words, I tried to write a good FR:TAS episode. It's nowhere near as long as my other fics; I'd say it's maybe a half-hour read.

Plaid-F In reply to Negaduck9 [2012-12-27 03:48:41 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the seasoned FR:TAS-watcher advice heh
The animated series has a...continuity?? I haven't given it enough credit, seems like. Oh man! Well I will definitely be delving into that fic soon! Especially because you are the cat's pajamas at writing Sidebottom.

Negaduck9 In reply to Plaid-F [2012-12-27 04:03:59 +0000 UTC]
Well... I wouldn't say the animated series has a continuity. More like it doesn't share a continuity with the rest of the show. There's no character arcs, progression, or anything.
Heh, I accidentally incorporated FR:TAS into my own continuity once, kinda. In "Commonplace Miracles" Wembley and Gobo climb the Gorg's castle, which was a nod to an animated ep. I had a brain fart and forgot that that didn't happen in the regular series. Oops!

It would be super cool for them to scale the castle in puppet form, though

Nice model sheet. I like how you included measurements of his legs, body, neck, and head with brief "hint" descriptions about him. I may have to use this for future reference in my future Janken fraggle drawings. I'm not done with Janken, got more ideas in my head, but it may be a while due to work load about to increase, a lot of OT, which usually does between late July - early September every year.

Glad this will be of use to someone besides me. There was originally another pic on this sheet showing one of the problem I have drawing him (and all other Fraggles): I tend to give them legs that are too long. I call it the flamingo look. Thankfully I can usually fix that in Photoshop before painting it up, and I'm getting much better about drawing them that way in the first place.

You can see a bad case of flamingo leg in the pic in which Skeeter is dressed as Magenta from Rocky Horror and Janken is trying to suppress his laughter. Sheesh, he looks like he's on stilts.

Negaduck9 In reply to CannedTins [2011-11-04 12:00:46 +0000 UTC]
I think it's more attitude than genes. He's purple and fuzzy and has a mushy face and a huge schnoz and a serious underbite, but he's also confident and outgoing, and those last two count for a lot.
Or maybe it's the jacket.

His lower jaw is much shorter than his upper jaw. That's an underbite. But it's pretty common among Fraggles, and I guess it doesn't look dorky to them.

That's an overbite, an underbite is when the lower jaw sticks out. I know because i have a boxer puppy with a huge underbite.
