Description At some point, I realized that both the height of a typical gundam and the length of an F-15 fighter was 19 meters.
A patlabor and me thrown in just for kicks.

Somehow, I had the impression that a gundam was much bigger than a jet fighter plane, or vice versa but it turns out they're pretty much the same.

So I think I can say the "Core fighter" in a gundam is kind of stretching the limits of believability. It's like a space go-kart.

I knew mobile suits were bigger than labors, but I didn't realize they were THAT much bigger!

This pic seems to be more famous than I ever imagined. Scary

Would've been funny if you put in a tiny scopedog from votoms for even more laughs. But, really, I never knew that a F-15 was that big, the only thing that flies over here are A-10's.

I might have put in a scopedog if I knew Votoms, but alas I haven't seen it.

And where do you live where A-10s flies around?

Not to far away from the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. They fly over head a lot in the spring.

ohohohoho....I saw and saved this from 4chan. *ahem* Yeah, core fighters -- slightly farfetched imo

Guh, my drawings posted on 4chan... I never went looking, but I don't know whether to be happy or concerned

If you look at the Gundam the core fighter makes since. Realise that the core fighter when in the suit looks like an upside down U with the GP-01, its back-pack its the bulk of the fighter. Then the next big chunk is the width of the suit then another section that's a little longer than the length from top of the chest to the middle of the pelvis. the original core fighter would be a little like a space go cart, but this one is much more sizable. Also figure as tec advances everything gets smaller.

Well the F-15 is quite the meaty fighter(unlike the F-16), and the Core fighter in the GP02 folds 90 degrees(I think) to become both the cockpit and most of the backpack.

A good comparison is in the last two episodes of 08th MS Team when a Gouf(kai) grapples a Corebooster(mass produced corefighter bomber design). The Gouf looks about the same height as the Corebooster(which might be about the same if not bigger than a F-15). How it pulled itself along side/up to the plane is just another Anime/Gundam plot hole/quirk.

True ...
I looked it up on wikipedia, and the original core fighter is supposed to be 8.6 meters in length, so half the size of modern fighters.
So that's the part I find hard to believe, to be able to fit a decent power plant into that size to make it an effective fighter plane ... though then I'd have to start calling out the mini-nuclear plants in all the mobile suits as well

Although, if the problem with the power plant size is solved, there's no reason why fighters shouldn't be reduced in size to minimize the chances of being hit by enemy fire...

I've seen cross section's of the RX-78-2(The original Gundam) and can't for the life of me figure out how the reactor is in the main two components(The top and bottom) of the suit, they had to have been in the Core Fighter which made it a flying reactor(or two).

That meant it had or could have had, nuclear jet engines(technically Fusion not Fission based). Later examples of the size of reactors in the original Mobile Suit Gundam seem to put them at the size of a large jet engine(think of the Harrier's Pegasus or the F-15's) only a bit taller and somewhat wider. The Core fighter could have flown on just the thermal exhaust from the reactor and or thru a simple turbine setup given that the main body of the Fighter couldn't have fit two reactors(and their support systems) plus regular jet engines(with the fuel and other support systems). That also explains the limited armament of the fighter(machine guns, and a few missiles).

This reactor setup might also explain the destruction a Core Fighter's impact does. The Reactors might not be at 100%, maybe only at maximum 50%(normal cruise maybe 20-25% or 10-20%).

More later...

Well, as long as it looks "cool" it doesnt matter hehe. And gundams having "small scale nuclear reactors" are quite unbelievable too lol. Having some of them fly at high speed with such small rocket boosters and strange aerodynamics is quite intriguing as well (regardless of them having a very lightweight gundanium alloy -_-)

Anyway, you know Bootfighter?

Hey, it's those Minovsky particles! They make all kinds of crazy stuff possible!
The official things say the gundams are anywhere from around 43t (first gundam) to 28t (zeta) down to an insane 7t (X). I did the simple math, and if they were human size (1/10 scale), they would weigh 1/1000, which is like 43kg, 28kg, and 7kg.
So light!

Haven't heard of Bootfighter before.
But it looks like the Gundam vs Gundam arcade games.

Oh well, i guess it depends on what kind of hardware they carry hehe, im not very knowledgeable about gundams so im not sure about teh details, i just use em for reference for weird stuff like high end/caliber video card mechs and internet mech -_- [link]

About Bootfighter(a free game btw), actually its a ripoff of Gundam vs gundam games hehe thats why its similar, except that its for PC, and you can customize your pilots, sound effects avatars etc, and the retail one lets you fully upgrade em and stuff.

Yeah, it's like the explanation for everything, at least for the original story line. And the naming scheme for your mecha weapons is hilarious

Well, if bootfighter is a rip, then it explains the uncanny similarity

Jets are effing huge. It took me a long time to learn that. Why don't they make smaller jets? I thought they did...

Well, they do go down to 12m(40ft) ... sort of
[link]

For ones that actually exist, the F-16 is a compact fighter, but it's still 15m (50ft) in length.
