Description
A mecha I drew about 5 years ago.For humanoid shaped mechas, all the sensors tend to be clustered in the head, as is for a human.
That means one shot to the face knocks out all perception of the outside world for the pilot inside.
Although Gundam and Full Metal Panic mechas tend to have a last-resort Vulcan cannons located in the head, I've always wondered about this since ... wouldn't the noise and light of firing off rounds right by the sensors mask everything else rendering the mecha deaf and blind whenever it's fired?
Since the head isn't really useful for anything else, wouldn't it make the mecha much more resilient and increase redundancy if sensors were dispersed all over the mecha's chassis?
Such was the thought behind this sketch.
And yes, I screwed up the direction of the crotch segment.

I think the vulcans would have suppressors, but if the main sensor suite was always located on the head, I doubt it would matter if the vulcans where placed there since the head would be rendered useless with just one shot and taking out the sensors too. it is a good design practice to make sensors redundant on a mecha too.
Its probably a form of intimidation, why nearly all mechas have heads. And possibly a human thing. It would be confusing if a mecha didn't have a head and had to rotate it's torso or point every time to address someone directly, rather than giving quick head gestures for confirmation, nodding in a general direction, or even giving eye contact as a human would when addressing each unit.

I'm always mesmerized by mech's exterior designs. The features and detail always throw me off. @_@
But this is cool! And you definitely bring up an interesting subject about the Vulcan cannons and the head too. I honestly never thought of that!

If this were anime, I'm sure any amount of design flaws or setbacks can be overcome by spirited yelling combined with dramatic pushing and pulling of one of the two levers inside the cockpit
