Since im not an artists myself but like to look in depth at the art that the community produces, id like to offer some words on what i see and feel about this.
First off, I really like this. Without going and actually reading the fic, it clearly places and sets the scene for me that Luna is nervous about serving this customer, because of what i can only see upon my initial reaction is her first job. Again i had not read into this too far.
The expressions on the faces are pretty spot on. the nervous grin coming from Luna, and casual everyday mom look from the mare, and of course the screaming mall child which we all have come to experience in supermarkets (the little filly is much cuter though) They are well done and set the right amount of tone here.
Looking at the smaller details. The numberpad, register, display screen... even the colors of the till and signs...very Wal-Mart-esk. Yellow text on blue. Lines art is very well done, i don't see many errors throughout such as misalignment or eraser marks.
Lighting was very well done, the reflection of the lighting on the rubber bumpers, the cart rails, the crinkled texture on the bags, and the soft glow of the fluorescent lights are pretty well in proportion, a little more shading could have been provided under the lips of the bumpers and till itself. Although i was impressed at how you captured the look of the stainless steel buffer strip on the bottom. and the seam was a nice touch of where the strips meet. Im assuming you had a reference picture to go by or you have a very photogenic memory.
One more note on the lighting pertaining to the eye shines, you included little breaks in the shines going across the eye indicating the lights above are segregated, so that's a nice touch there.
About the only thing that really hit my eye negatively was the proportion of the lights as they fall off into the distance. they are not evenly spaced in proportion to the fall off giving a slight warped look to that end of the painting. The same could be said about the little bars on the bottom of the cart. The un even spacing of the bars makes the cart look a bit stubby on the bottom.
Overall.. Very nicely done, cute, and has a great overall feeling to it, even though the tone of the piece is meant to have an awkward feel to it.

If you ever work a register at a major store chain like Walmart or Target then you get the meaning. Β She is not crying cause of Luna. Β She is crying cause she is not getting the toy or ice cream or some shiny thing she wanted that mom won't get her. Β So she the only thing she can to try and get her way. Β Cry!Β
That and that cart is full. Β So she has to deal with a full cart, probably a coupon-er and the crying/fussy kid. Β As well as by the look. Β I bet Luna is still very new or this is her first day. Β Ya! Β Don't panic Luna! Β This whole democracy thing is just a passing phase. Β Soon your subjects will realize that it does not work and call you and Celestia (who is probably a manager in fast food) back to the castle to rule over there lives. Β

Superb work! That child is so adorable, I feel sorry for Luna, and I love the reflection in their eyes. Also, I worked at grocery stores for a combined twelve years (four at Wal-Mart--which is obviously what you modeled it after) and you have captured the register down pat!
