Description *phew~!* Final version of this [link]

I noticed I was missing A WHOLE BUNCH OF IMPORTANT STUFF THAT REALLY NEEDED TO BE ON THERE so I added it in. I'm still not 100% satisfied with it, and I kick myself for getting lazy and not putting down everything I know about drawing Ginga (I've studied that style in depth for over a year[ihavenolife;A;], so when I say I know a lot, I'm not bragging, arrogant as that may seem)

So yeah, I hope this helps... even more than that crappy excuse for a tut I posted earlier in the week X3

Feel free to show me anything made using this tut, or point out things that I should change in this tut, or just stuff about Ginga, I'm all ears

Fantastic references for dog anatomy:

Also worth looking at:

Manga images (c) Yoshihiro Takahashi
Photographs (c) their respective owners
This tut (c) me

PS: I've got one last addition to make to this tut -separately though. I'm planning to put together some info on Ginga expressions, and about the Koga dogs (Just to clear up some misconceptions)

Wow, this is very impressive! I've been learning how to draw in the Ginga style, but it has so many details I often simplify them. I should really learn to draw in the manga style, and this helps greatly.

Thank you so much for making this

I personally actually like how the chest and necks look, both are one of my fave features for the Ginga-style

but that's just me, I guess

This is very detailed and well thought out! I like how you pointed out certain. specific observations for each part, it helps a lot. :3

I'm trying to get better at the ginga style and it's just too difficult for me to get their bodies just right so i stick to head shots for trades/requests and just practice bodies in private.
One thing that took me a long time to even get somewhat right is the head anatomy and the neck to the head concept. It can very difficult to get it right without the canine looking stiff or mutilated. O__x

Anyway, again thank you for this!
you have no idea how helpful it is and will continue to be! ~

Hmm, I think the ginga feet from the side are variations of them from the front. Go to [link] and check out their image banks. If anything I'm sure you'll find a good ref for feet/pose in there.

Holy crap, that's really helpful! I never noticed the nose and head differences. I was drawing my boyfriend's German Shepherd from a photo, and I noticed something else that Takahashi could be trying to show with the chest bits. [link] Notice the lines on his chest that resemble the Ginga chests? I think it's a change in fur direction. It's harder to see/not there at all on thicker furred dogs, but it's there on the shorter haired ones.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

nekonotaishou In reply to TheRootOfAllEvil [2009-12-04 16:28:17 +0000 UTC]

OMG! That's exactly the kind of photo I needed when making this tut! And that's exactly the kind of observation I was hoping to hear! Thank you so much!

Excellent catch with the hair thing! I actually came to the conclusion that they're shoulders from looking at my own dog (a teeny 2 pound chihuahua mix) He's got very very short hair on his chest, and you can see his little shoulders quite clearly.
My non-ginga-fan sister has often told me to draw him Ginga style because he'd fit it well, so apparently there's more observation from life in the style than first impressions would suggest.

Since Yoshihiro Takahashi has mostly had larger dogs, perhaps the chests are like your boyfriend's German Shepherd; hair instead of shoulders

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheRootOfAllEvil In reply to nekonotaishou [2009-12-04 21:35:51 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome to use that photo if you want I dunno, now I'm kind of mixed on the issue of a fur direction change and actual shoulders. I've got photos of other friends' dogs and random dogs on my comp, and I was looking at someone's Whippet (or Italian Greyhound, I don't remember), and there is a fur change and the shoulder shape that you were talking about. Perhaps the Ginga chests are a mix? I'm curious if just chest muscles could be a possibility. The dogs in the Ginga world are probably pretty ripped cause they're running all over the place, so it could make sense, but I'm not sure if there's any muscle on that part of a dog. I've got a friend who has a Jack Russell who is freaking ripped because they run with him all the time, but I don't have any front shots of him, so I can't really give any good evidence to support that.

snailkites In reply to TheRootOfAllEvil [2009-12-02 00:43:39 +0000 UTC]

I noticed the fur direction thing too! I think Yoshi's ''boobdogs'' as they're sometimes called are just trying to show the fur pattern and shoulder muscles.

One of the first complaints I usually hear from new fans is "why do the dogs have boobs?!"

nekonotaishou In reply to snailkites [2009-12-04 16:40:56 +0000 UTC]

Lol, my first complaint, and the first complaint of the next person I tried to turn on to Ginga, was about the same exact expression that all the dogs seemed to have and about the 'square' muzzles XD

I must add that one particular sketch of Raisu from your photobucket account really made an impression on me, where you use an oval-ish shape on the front of the muzzle.

One of the reasons my version of the Ginga style is what it is now is because of that sketch <3

Really? XD It wouldn't happen to be that little Raisu sculpture I saw floating around your photobucket, would it? XD I absolutely love how you've got all sorts of pictures up there, especially the WIP of comic pages and other pieces from your gallery~ <3<3 I love your notebook doodles as well, they inspired me to doodle scenes from SF in my school notebooks too XD

Thankyuu! Your art is a huge inspiration to me! Especially your colorwork, I adore how you shade with really wacky colors (like purple!) and it just looks soooo good!
Your style's expressions are so mobile they make my guys' faces look stoic D:

B'awwww, you >w< I'm really inspired by Don Bluth's stuff and old disney movies. I love their play on colors, like every now and then there's a pink dog or a purple cactus somewhere.

Do you plan on doing art as a career???

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nekonotaishou In reply to rabidchild42 [2009-12-11 19:45:06 +0000 UTC]

Don Bluth's stuff is awesome! I never realized that color thing... but you have a point 8D

Yes, I am For a while I was considering splitting my studies between art and veterinary science, but have since thought it over carefully and I'm off to art college next year to study animation *excited*

My (current)animation teacher (a teacher at the college I'm going to) has told me he wouldn't be surprised if I managed to go right into the business without going through college @_@ but there's still a lot I have to/need to/would like to learn.

And you? I know you're in college, and I'm going to take a guess and say you're probably studying animation too... am I right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rabidchild42 In reply to nekonotaishou [2009-12-13 08:07:24 +0000 UTC]

Wow! That's great!!!! 8D An education is invaluable though, so I owuld say if you can get a job and study art at the same, you're golden!

Yeup, im at a university studying art and animation. I've recently picked up a lot of interest in illustration too. There isn't much traditonal animation work offered here right now which is what i REALLY want to do with all my heart, so I may end up doing storyboarding a lot. Already am hooking up with cartoon network right now But the only studio doing traditional animation is Disney, and I know I wont get into Disney for a while but that's my goal in life! To be one of the greatest animators and take the place of one of the 9 old men!
I also will study CG animation, I love that stuff too and all but to be honest I'm not as interested XD
