Description Seriously. Some ukes are dangerous. :/

This was meant to be a quick drawing to relieve stress, but it ended taking me two whole days to finish. xD  It didn't turn out as I expected, but guess I can't complain. I wanted to make it look kinda like an screenshot of an anime, but ended adding too much glow effect and weird shading. And the poor creature looks so derpy! That eye omg! xD Don't look at it, okay?? xDD
I intended to practice cell shading, I hope the result doesn't look too weird, since I was experimenting with layer properties and such. Well, at least I like it.
Ah, it's been so long since I last made a full picture! I don't know if this is actually a "full" picture since it's just a headshot and the background is the simplest thing in the world, but at least I finally made something that's not transparent or white background.

But he looks so uncute here! >///< Though chained ukes are the best ukes... :} He's quite out of character, since he's usually shy, blushable and useless, but he's also supposed to be a dragon, so I guess he should be able to act like this when he's in trouble... I guess. xD Useless Noche is useless. No wonder no seme approaches. You need courage to tame this uke! :333

Ah, an uke breaking the chains. Interesting, and interestingly far away from the usual boring cliché of "almighty seme rapes helpless uke".

Hmmm... Not an "uke" then. This would make him a power bottom. (My personal favorite )

BTW, speaking as a gay man who lived in Japan and who is married to a Japanese man, there is no such thing as "uke." It's an entirely made-up term only for the BL industry. The proper terms in Japanese are:

Bari-tachi: exclusive top
Tachi: non-exclusive top
Riba: switch/reversible. 50/50, in other words
Neko: non-exclusive bottom
Bari-neko: exclusive bottom

There are alternatives to these words, but those are the common ones that I heard.

Fair warning to any gay men who try to pick up Japanese guys, if you use terms like "seme" and "uke," you WILL get laughed at. Trust me, I learned from experience.

Omg, that's interesting! xD I didn't know there were specific words for all that.
Well, since I'm a girl I guess it's normal for me to use the generic BL terms, but I never thought you would get laughed at for not using the others. At most, it would make you look naive and cute, wouldn't it? ^^

And, uh, what exactly is a "power bottom" then? xD Kinda like a "dominant uke"?

Naive? Perhaps. Cute? Maybe. Hilarious? Most definitely.

I suppose if one were to use a misnomer, a "power bottom" would be a dominant uke. However, that's the problem with the seme/uke terms. They were created not just for sexual positions, but also personality and describing stock character type. In order to be "uke," a character must not only be a bottom, but also be small, inept, weak, and weepy. Otherwise, he's not truly uke. Though I do enjoy yaoi and other BL, I often feel rather frustrated with so many manga rehashing the exact same character tropes over and over.

For sure, however, BL mangas exist that mix things up a bit. Little Butterfly is one of my favorites, having the tall, dark, handsome top character as the emotionally broken one and the cute bottom one as the stable, emotionally grounded one. It's a good character drama. And, dear lord, Love Stage. A show that takes all the BL tropes, puts them in the comedy blender, and hits "puree." Hysterical.

Not that western gay-related stories are much better. Overall, they're getting stale too. Almost all western media starring gay characters are either about relationships or coming-of-age. Interesting, to be sure, but it gets old after seeing it 5000 times. This is, essentially, why I'm writing my own story. I want to see gay characters in a hero's journey, science-fantasy story. Nobody else is doing it, so I'm doing it myself.

I see the difference now, but I still think that an uke doesn't necessarily need to be weak and inept. I've seen many characters that are still considered ukes and are powerful or have strong personalities. I kinda think that uke refers more to the naive, cute, small appearance, since I know many yaoi fans (mostly girls) who identify the "uke" just by looking at a picture, without even knowing anything about them. So a strong character can still be an uke as long as he looks cute and small.

Ah, Love Stage! I watched the anime and I loved it! It was totally cute and made me laugh a lot! xD It's one of my favorites. But, well, I don't read/watch as much yaoi as everybody thinks, so even if all the yaoi characters are the same, I still haven't read as much as to get tired of it. xD

As for m/m literature I don't have that much knowledge. I'm very picky when it comes to books, and I usually read only fantasy or historical, so the only books with gay main characters I read are the first two books of the Nightrunner series, which is a fantasy series with very little romance in it, only a kiss at the end of the second book, and the Persian Boy, which is the story of a young slave who becomes the lover of Alexander the Great, but still, I think there are plenty of books with gay characters who aren't just about relationships. I've found a lot of these while looking for something to read. They just didn't appeal to me because those are always too focused on sex for my taste. :/ But, yeah, I know what you mean. I want to see an story like that too, so I'll probably take a look at your story. Though I visited your page, but couldn't find a summary of it, only the chapters and characters.

To be a true uke, he has to be weak and inept. The definition in Japan is quite strict, although westerners have interpreted the concept much more loosely. It is, also, an old concept. Japanese yaoi artists have, understandably, grown tired of the old tropes and mix things up more. They rarely even use the seme/uke terms. They are quite outdated now.

However, you did mention that many yaoi fans can tell an "uke" just by looking at a picture. This still seems to be true to a large extent with the Japanese stuff. I know what you mean and, from the gay male p.o.v., this drives me nuts. In the real world, it is utterly impossible to tell such a thing by looking at a picture. (Unless it was a naughty picture... but I digress.) One thing I've learned over the years is that a writer can invent the most ridiculous, over-the-top, fantasy situation for a character and, for the most part, the audience will go along with it ONLY IF the characters feel real. For me, that which fits into the old-fashioned seme/uke paradigm doesn't feel real. I was, however, okay with Love Stage doing it because it was more of a satire of the concept.

Indeed there are books out there. I have found some. Artifice is a great gay sci-fi comic. It's relationship-oriented, but mostly a fascinating psychological drama. There surely aren't many and most are definitely not mainstream. I think LGBT literature still has some growing up to do. As for my own story, when you say you visited my page, do you mean my dA page? The summary is under the Carpathia III logo:

"Carpathia III is a sci-fi/steampunk story that will be written in comic-script style and it will follow the stories of five teenagers and one dragon as they endeavour to survive in a despotic nation on the desert moon of Yseri. Oh, and most of the main characters are gay or bi. "

It starts off with a series of five short stories to orient the reader to the characters and their world. (And yes, some relationships too. ) After that, the main story begins and I throw them all into a frying pan and watch them dance.
