I always get a kick out of Christians who complain about violence and gore (oh, and sex) in tv and movies, but then go on to say that the Bible is absolutely child appropriate material.Interesting enough to read: Cruelty and Violence in the Bible
*Note: Obviously this site is a bit biased.
To counter balance that I'll share something else.Jesus is Savior - Here's a site that's biased in the other direction.

Those children's Bibles cherry-picked the most "appropriate" parts of the original Bible. One, that would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. And two, that would be cherry-picking, and that's also forbidden by the Bible. I remember when I was 9 or so, mom got me some Bible that says it's translated for children to be understood more easier. Yes, they had EVERY part of the original Bible, including the stuff mentioned in your stamp. Again, all of those things were reworded to make it more coherent. If I recall correctly, I accidentally read the part where this guy has 2 daughters who are teenagers, he fracked both of them, and together they had children. That's all I could remember about it.

This is reminding me of when my mom was watching the History Channel's "The Bible" miniseries and I came into the family room right as Samuel stabbed a guy in the gut and proceeded to rant at King Saul.
My response: "DUDE! CHILL!"
And it seems that some people I know tend to forget that David also cut off Goliath's head.

The Bible doesn't teach those things, just mentions them, like history books.
But actually, even though I'm a Christian, I have some rather...controversial views. I kinda think exposing kids to violence/gore, sex and evil is...not that bad an idea. I don't believe in "sheltering" or "sugar-coating". The world is evil- evil happens. Pain, horror, gore, death, rape, violence, it all happens. Let's not sugar-coat anything. Kids are gonna have to be exposed to the real world sometime. I just believe in toughening them up.
I'm the kind of dad that would probably let my kids watch gory movies, while still teaching them that these things are evil, but they do happen in the world

Well, it does specifically give instructions in the OT about how to go about doing war and justice -- like what to do with a woman who has been raped in a city who didn't scream for help (stone her to death alongside her rapist), or what to do with entire cities if they do not open their gates willfully, etc. I personally don't believe it's morally acceptable to purposefully expose young children to things like rape and violence. I mean -- I was pretty sheltered as a kid, but my nephew has been watching the news since he was very little, and at age 10 he was already so jaded, he grew up too quickly and socially he's a bit of an outcast because of it. I don't know if that's a common reaction with kids who are exposed to that sort of thing so early, but that's just the experience I can share here.

Hmm...wouldn't know, as we can't get into other people's minds.
I'm quite desensitized and a total social outcast. But I see my state of mind as something that could be positive, so long as I'm not deliberately aggressive or violent. And I'm not- I'm actually a pacifist. I wouldn't hurt a fly, unless had good reason to. I'm just rather indifferent to suffering. My state of mind is only "dangerous" if it is combined with the wrong vices.

It's rather hypocritical, but I suspect it is due to biblical ignorance. I am told 99% of the faithful never actually read the bible, and I think if they all did we'd have a bigger portion of atheists in the christian world.

99% is what I hear from the podcasts, Atheist Experience etc. And it sounds about right; most people do not think too hard about things like cultural beliefs or whether they are right or wrong, they just conform.

It should be a requirement for all Christians to read the Bible at least once in their life before they reap any of the benefits of going to their Church or whatnot. We'd get more Atheists that way, ha!

I think many Atheists make that mistake. There's a difference between worship and belief. I mean I can say that Hitler was terrible but he existed. I mean I believe there's a God. I just don't believe in this Yahweh fellow. I mean the bible is nothing more than a book of Bronze age Mythology. I mean I hear that many de-convert because Yahweh is an asshole. Which he is. But it doesn't dismiss the existence of a deity. The problem is whether there is proof of an actual creator and how far did it go.

That's true that just because the Yahweh fellow is portrayed as a douche, it doesn't dismiss the possibility of the existence of a deity, however it still doesn't address the problem of there not being any measurable proof, which is why most atheists don't believe deities exist.

I can agree with this, but because back then there was many wars over land and religion back then. Those acts of violence are suppose to teach us to be better Christians and people. I rather watch a good action movie with out all the sex. But hey you can't have action with out violence especially transformers :3 haha
You know what I say and so does my mother is not to let your children watch that. Like I watch cartoons and Disney channel (I mean the good shows on there),but you know what I also watch the news and crime shows. I believe in monitoring what children watch and hear at home, but you can not do that at school or out in the real world. All you can do is teach them what is right and wrong.

Yes! My parents had a Bible for my siblings and I and it was like over the stories of Moses, Adam and Eve, etc. I fully understood that part of the Bible but there is more to it then that. There is more lessons that are taught in there that I could not fully understand until I was much older like 13 and 14. In the Bible children are sinless until the age of 6 then they are held accountable for their sins. I would instill those lessons about behaving your best and always do the right thing before then. I wasn't saved until I was 13 because I didn't fully understand. I knew that Jesus was my Lord and Savior, but I didn't fully understand. That is what my friend's uncle is having his daughter do she is 8 or 9 years old and she is getting baptized. I am not getting baptized till this summer and I am almost 18 because I am more mature then I was at 13.

Ah yeah, I totally get the whole 'not understanding til you're older' thing. I was raised Christian-ish, went to a private Christian school for a few years in elementary school, and went to sunday school a few times as well. My parents tried to raise me like that but in the end I never really understood what the whole deal was, only that my parents said some guy called Jesus/God was watching me at all times making sure I wasn't being bad - but that didn't stop me from being a little brat sometimes anyway. In the end I fell away from the religion because it just didn't fit into my life, and so I was atheist for the majority of growing up. Anyway thank you so much again for your comments, I really enjoy reading them.

Yea people will not get it even when they are older, but if you do not understand it is ok. I pray that people will one day find a path to understanding, but I will not force you. Same with me! Kids will be kids. We act up as children because we are still learning what is right and what is wrong from our parents. We still do it as teens and adults we just have to learn to correct ourselves. Aw thanks and no problem. I have been enjoying having a mature conversation with another person.

Yeah, I'm not a religious person, but this is something that bugs me. "OMG think of the children, we must ban that gorefest game/movie NOW!" but then straight away shove a Gideon Bible at a schoolkid...I don't get it.

Yeah, I had a Christian counsellor once when I was younger and she told me (no kidding) that listening to heavy metal, which is full of gory themes, will make me demon-possessed.LOL. The "good book" is more of a gorefest than any metal song. Even Cannibal Corpse (of whom I am not a fan, btw) probably couldn't match up.
