I've read about half of it, yes. But a book is not proof of anything other than that the book itself exists. It's like saying that the Harry Potter books are proof that Hogwarts exists.

Finish riding the whole thing before you start trying to use it against God. It really isn't going to help the case here.

Have you read the entire Bible from cover to cover?

XxDiaLinnxX In reply to Nekromanda [2012-05-14 14:06:59 +0000 UTC]
You can read a bible cover to cover 2 TIMES and one would still not understand the context without further study. Happens all the time.

Of course, to Christians 'understanding the context' is accepting the truth of it full stop. Kind of like saying if you jumped off the roof and fell, it's because you didn't believe you could fly hard enough.

XxDiaLinnxX In reply to i-stamp [2012-05-14 18:31:01 +0000 UTC]
Some Christians may do that, but understanding context of ANYTHING, in my opinion, requires lots of study and reading of the context itself. I'm not shrugging off the responsibility of Christians knowing about what they read.

i-stamp In reply to XxDiaLinnxX [2012-05-14 18:34:01 +0000 UTC]
What if someone who has done a lot of studying and reading the context itself still comes to a non-Christian conclusion? Would you still say they misunderstood?

Very interesting question. Does everyone look at the same evidence and the same context? Do people let their current beliefβs become a lens towards the things they look at in the Bible and only choose to understand what they WANT to understand? I take very seriously what the atheists have to say, but some atheist tend to never take our case seriously, so there is quite an imbalance when it comes to two people of different beliefs doing the same studies.

There are plenty of atheists who started out as Christians (or people of other religions who started out as Christians), looking just as hard for something in the bible to affirm their faith and not finding it. You couldn't write them all off to confirmation bias.

XxDiaLinnxX In reply to i-stamp [2012-05-14 19:08:14 +0000 UTC]
Everything is biased, because nobody looks at one thing the same way all the time.
And if we are going to play that game, there are alot of Christians who started out as atheists, and they found all they needed to affirm their faith in the context studies of the Bible.

"Everything is biased, because nobody looks at one thing the same way all the time. "
I disagree. Having a point of view does not mean it's impossible to approach something objectively.
"And if we are going to play that game, there are alot of Christians who started out as atheists, and they found all they needed to affirm their faith in the context studies of the Bible."
Which is why I don't argue that passion or study or prayer or any singular quality results in the correct answer. Because two people can have or do all of those things and come to different answers.
Of course, I believe anyone who says they have truth by divine revelation is lying through their teeth. But that's another subject.

It's funny how Christians, unlike pretty much any other theistic religion I've heard of, assert that their deity is super nice and wonderful 24/7.

Haha yeah, and this despite the fact that their book that's supposed to infallibly be "his word" is stuffed full of story after story of their god just beating the piss out of humanity.

What? Trouble comprehending stating an opinion is not being childish? Yeah, I could see how someone new to the internet could have trouble with that.

Ok good sir, this is coming form the person who's signature says, "This is my opinion of your opinion" With a disgusted face. How mature, eh?

KontonAkuma In reply to ThatOneGuyIsCool [2012-05-14 02:58:52 +0000 UTC]
1. Not a 'sir' but thanks for trying.
2. Most signatures aren't meant to be taken seriously anyway.
3. It's also targeted towards people who force opinions down other's throats. Not those who wish to have a mature discussion.

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that making stamps on the topic of religion made me a child.

ThatOneGuyIsCool In reply to Nekromanda [2012-05-14 02:36:17 +0000 UTC]
The fact of them being related to religion means nothing. A small child could go to church and make a small stamp too.

A small child wouldn't know what the hell they were talking about. Many Christans try to insist their god is good by referring to the bible, but many of the stories within it are of god asserting his authority over humans in a very negative way. Don't see how stating a well observed point is being childish.
π: 0 β©: 1
ThatOneGuyIsCool In reply to KontonAkuma [2012-05-14 02:57:34 +0000 UTC]
Now if you actually took the time to read my comment, I was never saying this is childish, just saying that just because they related to religion meant nothing.

KontonAkuma In reply to ThatOneGuyIsCool [2012-05-14 03:01:49 +0000 UTC]
"A small child could go to church and make a small stamp too." So a child going to a place of worship is not relating to religion at all?
And still don't see how making a well observed point is being childish.

You said the first statement. That could just as well mean the quotes. And I don't see how that was pulled out of my ass?
π: 0 β©: 1
ThatOneGuyIsCool In reply to KontonAkuma [2012-05-14 03:27:33 +0000 UTC]
You were saying I was trying to say that a child going to church didn't have anything to do with religion. I actually said that just because a stamp was about religion didn't make it mature.
π: 0 β©: 1
KontonAkuma In reply to ThatOneGuyIsCool [2012-05-14 03:29:47 +0000 UTC]
You were trying to say that religion had nothing to do with it then pulled in something about a child going into a church with a stamp saying the same thing. I was just pointing out that if you want to prove your point, don't bring religion back into it. And no one is saying that this is mature because it's about religion, but there's no need to call someone childish for asking a question even if it is against what you believe.

Which god?
But seriously. I wouldn't doubt it at all if that's how it turned out to be. I mean, no offense to anyone who believe that God is a benevolent being, but seeing all the shit in the world and believing that he is a 100% good god is a little rough.

KearaLemon In reply to KontonAkuma [2012-06-12 01:56:05 +0000 UTC]
The concept is that god is good and just because bad things happen on Earth doesn't mean that he's a evil god. God doesn't cause the things that happen on Earth, people do. We have the free will to make our own decisions. He doesn't stop us or control us because that would be taking away our free will. That's how I see it anyways.

KearaLemon In reply to KidSapiens [2013-03-07 01:09:43 +0000 UTC]
Well, they would be wrong. Uncontrollable things in space or whatever caused that. Things just...happen.
π: 0 β©: 1
crookedalley In reply to KearaLemon [2014-03-13 11:23:55 +0000 UTC]
And God just...lets them happen? Even though he's omnipotent and could stop any bad thing from happening with less than the effort it would take you or I to blink?Β
He's kind of a jerk then, isn't he?Β
π: 0 β©: 1
KearaLemon In reply to crookedalley [2014-03-15 02:25:16 +0000 UTC]
Yes, exactly. Things happen for a reason, good or bad.
And no, not really.
π: 0 β©: 1
crookedalley In reply to KearaLemon [2014-03-15 22:38:15 +0000 UTC]
But doesn't God decide the reason? He set the very parameters for logic and reality, action and reaction, cause and consequence, right? Didn't God author all that is and all that ever will be, the physical and metaphysical, the conceptual and the concrete, from pure nothingness?Β
