Story :
When Elijah entered the train, he couldn't help but quickly wipe a tear in a corner of his eye. Walking this place again was making him emotional. When was the last time ? He couldn't remember exactly, but it was at least 30 years ago. The old man took the direction of his cabin, politely dodging the other people around him. He was not feeling like talking to anybody. He just walked through the corridors, passing one cabin after another, until he end up in front of the one which was his... The exact same one that he had with Barbara back then. "What a twisted luck..." he mumbled as he opened the door. The cabin was both very different yet all the same that in the past. Same colors, same wooden walls, same old-looking lamps, yet all has a fresh new smell.
The man sighed as he put his bag on the storage units then, once the train started to move, he goes to take a hot shower. It was the first one since weeks and he badly needed it. After this refreshing and comforting moment during which a lot of memories came back in his mind, he came back to the cabin and grabbed his stuff to go pick up his diner. As he was walking through the silent corridors, the faint voice of Barbara was ringing in his ears. "So, what are we going to eat mon cher ? I heard that their pastas are absolutely famous ! And you know what ? They also have this favorite Bourbon of yours ! What a luck, huh ? Like at home !" he surprised himself by wearing a soft smile at this souvenir. Barbara was so lively and happy back then. They were so young, happy and carefree. They were owning the world and had nothing to fear. He reached the dining car, greets some other entrants of TWD and grabbed a plate of pastas and a glass of Bourbon as they still had both of them, then goes back to his cabin quietly.
Every step he was making in this place was reminding him some ethereal memories, tiny things but so sweet. No, bittersweet, even, as he'd never had a taste of them again until he reunited with his loved wife in their next life. He remembered the way Barbara was dancing more than walking in the train, excited like a kid to go in a new adventure. How her crystalline laugh was making everybody smile on their way, how solar and warm she was. He remembered this kid who was lost in the cars with who Barbara was so emotionally invested than she hug him tight to chase his fear then helped him to find back his parents. Then how she cried in relief when they found them back and when the kid hugs his mother like crazy afterwards and how the mother asked for her kids' forgiveness, promising him it'll never happened again. When he entered the room, he also remembered the melancholy of his wife, who was quietly sitting on the seats, eyes looking far in the landscape.
The trip they had this summer was from Elijah's initiative. It was soon after they discovered they could never had a child by themselves and it was meant to change Barbara's ideas. He remembered how sweetly she reassured him about her mental state, saying she was just glad to be able to go through this with him and to be there, enjoying this stunning view.
The man sat by the window and let his eyes wandering, admiring the snowy landscape under the light of the moon. The stars were shining, the scenery was peaceful. He'd have thought that this part of the trip will be more painful for him, Barbara wasn't gone for that long... But instead, as he had the feeling that his wife's spirit was leaning her head on his shoulder lovingly, he was feeling in peace.
"You know, ma chère, you'd have loved Germany in winter." he whispered to himself and to her, even though she wasn't here anymore.
"I have loved every places where you were, mon cher." she'd have answered. He smiled at the imaginary answer and took a sip of Bourbon. Yes. Definitely his favourite.
