And some of them, R.33, the Los Angeles, the Graf Zeppelin, worked incredibly well.

They sure did. Even the Hindenburg had a great year for 1936.

When these worked they were so wonderful. The problem was when they crashed the death tolls were comparatively huge when compared to the small planes of the day. Then those films of the Hindenburg disaster finished the idea of lighter than air flight for nearly seventy years.

The death tolls were high. It was only in the late 40's that plane crashes killed more people. But the Hindenburg was the first, and only, time fare-paying passengers died aboard an airship, and the USN used them into the 1960's, when they were killed-off by the nuclear sub drivers union.

The Germans (naturally - it was a German invention) have revived them for tourists in their lake area (as the Count originally had them). I heard they were quite pleasant to ride in for real aerial views.

Beautiful rendition of a beautiful ship of the air. Its a travesty that these rigids are no longer with us

Thank you. I would be happy to see the blimps return, but a big rigid would be a truly majestic spectacle.

I was never a fan of blimps myself, they are simply motorized balloons
