Heh... I am already that person. That's not going to change.

Why not?
I don't know you in real life. I seriously just thought this comic was cool and this is the second comment I saw, so I have no idea if you really are 'that person' or whatever. But so what? What do you mean by this, that it's too late or something? Because lemme tell you - it's not. The only way that will be true is if ya keep thinking that it is.
You read the comic too, right? THIS guy struggled with the same stuff, and look! He has a daily deviation! I don't know anything about the artist either, but to accomplish things, you can't think that you can't, or you'll never be able to move past an obstacle. You're a real person with real thoughts, and you're in charge of your own destiny.
Look, I know this sounds really, REALLY cheesy, but rarely, some things are repeated in stupidly-dramatic speeches for a reason. Sometimes things are repeatedly a lot because they're true to a lot of people. But here's what I'm driving at: Giving up to something you don't like, about the world or about yourself or about anything, isn't an answer. So what if you 'already are' that person? People make mistakes. People make years worth of mistakes. But in the grand scheme of your life, whats a few years gonna be, if it helped you get where you wanted to go? I'm not saying you should change in a matter of days or anything, that'd be insane. But if you want to not be "that person", believing you'll never change at all isn't going to do anything but make you sad, and who wants that?
By the way, this is coming from me, one of the laziest people I know. But I still believe in these things, and while doing is obviously a big, important thing, there's something to be said for believing.

I apologize for getting back to you so late on this. You actually took the time to write out a thoughtful and good intentioned comment. I guess I should explain myself for that comment. The day after I wrote that comment, I was checked into a mental hospital for depression and suicide watch... My state of mind when I wrote that comment was horrible, and looking at it... makes me feel really immature because I am better than that. I want to thank you because everything you said in that comment is true. I still struggle with thoughts sometimes but I can see the light and truth most of the time. I know I can change. I just need to make sure it is for the better.

Thanks!
It's less me talking about lack of recognition, though. It's more about that feeling of, no matter what your successes, feeling inferior compared to other, more popular artists and letting your work flounder as a result.
As someone said to me over on Twitter: "They're moving at their own pace, and so are we. We're running different races entirely."
Basically: be the best you can be and let the work and success of others inspire you, rather than getting caught up in destructive and negative thinking.

I feel this way all the time. My group has two members, I have under 20 watchers, and next to none of my art has even COMMENTS.

Calm down there, bud. That's about half of my watchers, and I've been on for nearly two years, and you're only at three months. You'll get there.

The arts is a very unpredictable and competitive industry and implying hard work gets results in that line of work isn't realistic.
I think people are enviable of others for their contacts, their agents, or just their sheer luck. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with a bit of envy.
After all, it might put a fire under some peoples backsides to work harder, to improve or try new avenues. It instigates competition in its own way because of the emotional response.

As I've said to others before (and in these comments), I see what you're talking about as not being outright 'envy' and more as friendly competition; that feeling you get when you see other artists cranking out kick arse work and it lights a fire in you to put out the best work you can as well.
Where it becomes unhealthy --and where many artists flounder-- is when that feeling crosses the thin line into envy, and the artist begins to blame others for their shortcomings, rather than themselves ("why are they popular and not me? It's not fair..." etc. etc.).

Well, if one is to measure artistic success or merit by how popular one happens to be on websites like Deviantart and Tumblr (I don't, but anyway) I can certainly suggest a number of ways. Popularity on DA, specifically, follows very specific formulas.
All it costs you is your pride, your personal integrity, and that of your OCs. XP lol
Youre right though. Envy that doesn't make people internalise their own faults - and seek to improve on them - is just wasted energy.

this is so accurate. sometimes i catch myself procrastinating on my art because i like to get distracted by random fun things on the internet like every other normal person. but something i realized one day is... sometimes i procrastinate on my art out of fear. i'm too nervous to start working. but i don't really think for very long about the nervousness, actually. i just think about it for one second and then ignore it and do other things. then i've wasted lots of time and i get more and more behind on my art to-do list!!
