Right, well, I have a serious doubt regarding Snaidi animals. The link doesn't seem to work do well and to be honest (laughs) I actually knew about the Jetocetes and cardiocetes through a Snaiad Wiki page, but then, let me ask you one thing;
if those things are, like, I dunno, jet-propelled, could they jump out of the water like a dolphin?
Like, say, can Torpedichthys do it? He seems like...orca-sized or something, in fact.
Get to me if you can.
And would you like my own little concept for a new kahydront family for Snaiad? Made it up meself, heh-heh!

A small question regarding the proliferation of Snaiad's major fauna (...Bicapans, I guess would be a proper moniker?). If the grand ancestor of all of these creatures was a sessile, buried-in-the-ground creature (which explains the reason for the seperation of the heads), what compelled this primeval Snaiadite to burrow itself out and wander about on land? Was there a mass extinction where it was simply the most widespread group left?

nemo-ramjet In reply to rosutu [2010-01-07 11:04:17 +0000 UTC]
I guess a Permian-style mass extinction, maybe something even bigger. Snaiad is twice as old as Earth - more time and more room for weird evolutionary accidents to get amplified.

I could imagine it'd be weirder.
And with that in mind, the logic behind a burrowing animal rising up as the dominant terrestrial species now works; it didn't mean to, but someone had to fill those tetrapod shoes.

I simply love how you used a basic alien template (the whole confuseing body parts thing) and followed it throughout your creatures, and yet they all look so diverse and real.
Tis simply amazing.

I've always been a fan of your stuff, and I'm just wondering, will there ever be a book? You know, like Barlowe's expedition? Some sort of coffee table book, with landscapes and ecosystems, as well as some of the more technical stuff, would be awesome.

One of the coolest websites and art projects I've seen in years.
...But have you any imminent plans to add entirely different phyla to Snaiad? Earth is shared by creatures as wildly unlike one another cnidarians, insects and echinoderms. I bet there's no end to the fascinating anatomical rules you could come up with and diversivy

Ok, so this is the question of the hour for me: What is sprog exactly? I understand of course that its a vegetal groundcover/understory ... are there any specifications you can give me other than what it just looks like (that would be good info too).
-Is their a wide variation to Sprog, as in is it somewhat totally analagous to plants/moss/fungi/etc?
-Does it range the whole planet (roughly), etc? If so, is comprised of many separate instances or is it one large organism or strain?
-From the descriptions I've read around it seems to be porous ... is it spongy or does it support weight? Both?
-How high does sprog grow? Is it a low groundcover, is it shrublike, does it extrude specialized parts, fruit, treeforms, shoots, runners, etc?
Anyhow, sorry for the inundation. Just curious!

I a bit curious: What are the origins or the 'Sea Serpents' to briefly brought up in passing back on the Snaiad page?
Are they a clad within the vertebrates, or perhaps a sister group? & do they share the 1st head/2nd head morphology of the ' proper' vertebrates?
I'm asking because I started pondering aquatic morphologies (such as aquatic animals who's evolution lead to a dominance of the 2nd head & reduction of the first head, er go their 1st head/ second head development is the opposite of that of proper vertebrates whose 1st head are the dominant structure (i.e. it's importance stretches from reproduction, receiving external sensory stimuli, feeding (though not actually used in ingestion of food), communication, and possibly housing the primary 'brains' of an animal) & the 2nd head has been reduced to an organ of feeding (and possibly communication & manipulation of objects).)
Thus could it be that the Sea serpents have 2nd heads developed for not only feeding, but also communication, manipulation, some level of sensory reception, possibly respiration, depending on how the issue of breath in an aqueous environment is solved, and most importantly, housing the ' primary' or 'Dominant' brain(s). This would make the first head reduced to an organ or reproduction & possibly sensory reception... or this could even lead to a mashing of the two heads together...
...dang, this all came out sounding very confusing, I'm sure. Sorry.

Actually, the Snaiadi Sea Serpents are all "fish-like" arthrognathans (imagine overgrown descendants of this creature: [link]
This phylum of animals is called arthrognatha, and they dominate all aquatic biomes with a huge variety of species.
But of course, there are no reasons why there shouldn't be any snake-like "vertebrates" either...

Just a taxonomical question you may or may not be able to answer:
If you have some orders in a class ending in a suffix like "formes", do all the orders in the class have to have that suffix? Birds come to mind...

I really didn't think much about this - some just sound better as -formes and some don't.
