It is rare that I make a comic simply to express my sheer bewilderment toward the profound ridiculousness of certain plot developments in any given series. And it is also not as though Fairy Tail has been completely free of such developments since I began reading it. Quite the contrary--it has been filled with almost nothing BUT such developments. However, somehow, I was compelled to put my feelings toward this particular series of "plot twists" into the form of a comic, and to share that comic with all of you.Now, if you love Fairy Tail and think it is just the greatest manga ever, and you can completely forgive all of the contrived, hackneyed, repetitive storytelling (or if you simply think that none of the storytelling actually IS contrived, hackneyed, or repetitive), that is totally cool with me. This comic is simply not for you. Or maybe it is. I don't know. I shouldn't make assumptions because we are all Spaghetti Monster's beautiful creatures.

I pretty much stopped giving a shit after the Tower/Jelal storyline. I tried to keep watching, but it became so obvious what was going to happen and the characters had pretty much stopped developing by then anyway.Β

I'm a big fan of Fairy Tail and I am not offended at all, each manga/anime has parts where it enters an arc that is significantly less in quality and Fairy Tail is currently going through that. I'm more offended at the Spaghetti Monster reference since its one of those jokes that was never funny.
In its defense, animes in general are contrived, hackneyed, and repetitive; you can't really blame Fairy Tail for having the flaws that persist in the entire industry.

I liked Fairy Tail when it first came out but things started getting reeaaally weird after the time skip. Hell, why was there even a time skip to begin with? Just because One Piece and Toriko were doing at the time does not make it ok. It felt forced and there was no build up to it. Even Naruto's time skip got a build up.

If your looking for a good shounen anime I would recommend Hunter X Hunter. It has a nice sense of progression all the chacters are unique in their own ways as well. Also despite first looks it is very dark.

While that's completely true, I still think Fairy Tail is one of the greatest mangas ever. I mean what typical shounen manga doesn't have stupid and senseless plot developments all over the place (I'm talking Bleach and Naruto right now)? The story's not what I'm reading shounen battle mangas for. It's the humor, the epic battles, the feels and strong emotions in certain scenes and welp, the fan service does its fair share too.
I still didn't like this particular plot 'twist' at all though. The story had always to get all out of its way just to make Gray look good. Seriously? Shooting rocks at the demon slayer guy does damage against him?

You know, honestly I can see the appeal of the continually upscaling, ridiculous fights and slapstick, and the omnipresent themes of friendship and all that. Honestly I can. I mean, that stuff is present in a lot of other series that I do like. And if that works for you, I have no problem with it. But when the story is trying to go for the feels, when it's trying to convey something deep and meaningful, when it's trying to communicate something about the characters, I can't take it seriously, because in no other aspect does the series challenge you. When a tale gives you something to think about--its themes, its ideas, the depth of its characters--it should make you THINK about it. The plot, themes, and characters can't just be chess piece storytelling. You can't just use the same plot devices and contrived dramatic developments over and over again. It becomes the opposite of challenging. It becomes the opposite of thought provoking. It becomes the opposite of deep and interesting. There has to be a balance between the ridiculous and the subtle. Between the senseless and the meaningful. It would be one thing if the series was 90 percent levity, and adventure, and discovery, with the occasional rest to look at something darker and deeper, but it's not. For a long time now, Fairy Tail has been about throwing tragic backstory after tragic backstory, death after death, didactic speech after didactic speech, and fakeout after fakeout in its readers' faces. If it didn't take itself so seriously so much of the time, I'd honestly have no problem with it. But, like this comic points out, it is constantly trying so hard to be dark and dramatic and clever without ever thinking about how to actually be dark and dramatic and clever, and that I just can't take.

Character design and powers are cool and interesting, fight scenes are awesome but it's exactly this shit which is why I'm not too fond of Fairy Tail. Natsu losing to the big bad guy? Make a speech about friendship. Random boost from nowhere, win. Big bad just insult Fairy Tail? "DON'T UNDERESTIMATE FAIRY TAIL" one hit and a win.

You just earned yourself as a watcher~ As a Fairy Tail reader, I heavily agree with this and wish they would do something else. But hey, Ice Demon Slayer Gray is cool too. Pun intended ;D But it would be nice to have someone else beat the final boss of this arc. Like someone that is not Natsu

It's funny, because I remember reading a bit of the reviews of this series on Anime news network, and I was shocked to see how well-reviewed it is when you see what they criticize the manga for in its earlier chapters. What they complain about early on, if I'm remembering correctly, is that the characters are not very deep or complex. And now, if you ask me, the series has certainly gotten way more serious, but I don't think the characters have really gotten all that deeper. They sort of are just placed in more tragic situations where they cry and make speeches about friendship and freedom and are very much still archetypes. And the problem with that is that none of the drama comes from the characters themselves. So little of this series is actually about internal struggles or making ethical decisions. All of the drama is external and black-and-white, and that leads to repetitively making more and more dire situations that we've seen a million times. And because nothing really comes of it, because the characters are so rarely explored or grow in an interesting way as a consequence of these events, they just beat the bad guy and move on to the next travesty. And you can tell the author seems to think that if he can just throw in as many tragedies, and new characters, and life-or-death situations, that'll somehow make it more interesting, but, at least to me, it just makes it more ridiculous and boring.

Biggest example of backtracking if I ever saw it! Good job describing how I felt about how stupid this whole thing really is and wow Mashima, you really can't make up your mind, can you?
Oh Fairy Tail, you once had promising potential but because of Mashima being too much of a coward to do anything new and different from what he already did before, he just instead frequently repeats himself with more lame cop outs and anticlimaxes as usual and really, why do I keep on reading this series again?
