Even as a kid and knowing pretty much nothing about Japanese culture, I knew those weren't donuts.

Donuts are rice balls. Rice balls are donuts. Simple.

I may have been a kid, and I may have been ignorant, but I sure as heck knew that those weren't gosh dang donuts.

Ahh, the horrid localization of early anime. In my opinion, Pokemon got it easy. I still shudder when I remember what 4Kids did to OnePiece. That show was so cut and pasted together hardly anything made sense. I still remember one early episode where 1/3 of it was the same five seconds of a giant dog running around they looped because the original footage was too violent.

Nope. It's a random crazy person over at YouTube who stalks any videos that make fun of 4Kids and spams them with rage and flame. He/she somehow considers 4Kids to be the pinnacle of American entertainment industry, perfect and without flaw.

That gets me that any fan would get so obsessed with their childhood hobby. I remember liking those old episodes of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid but I know they still had problems such as editing out a bunch of stuff deemed not appropriate for little kids to such an extent that it was completely unnecessary.
Honestly, we're lucky that today's localizers can typically give us fairly accurate translations of these shows with everything still left in them. Kids are smarter than producers and politicians think and can handle slightly mature themes.

Thankfully FUNimation took over and has released a faithful uncut and unedited English Dub of One Piece.
So far only Episodes 1-456 have been uncut dubbed, but more episodes will soon follow.

I was living in Okinawa around the time this dub aired, so I was really confused when they called the rice balls donuts.

Because of Brock, I literally thought that rice balls were jelly doughnuts. My parents then decided to give me actual jelly doughnuts and my child brain after eating one went "the ever loving f*ck is this?!" and threw it away. I still hate jelly doughnuts to this day

I still haven't had one, so I don't know if I'll like it or not. I hated jelly doughnuts because I was promised something and it was terrible. I haven't been promised riceballs

Localization can be horrible but not ALL dubs are terrible - I still say most of the Toonami stuff holds up.

"Jelly Doughnuts" my ass. Would it have killed the dub to just leave it as it was? Instead of having every American 90's kid looking like an idiot, their first real-life encounter with a rice ball being a traumatic, heartbreaking experience peppered with deception and lies?

I know. Part of why I said it.
You know, people pointed guns at Batman all the time, and nobody cared! Conroy, West, it didn't matter, yet those still get airtime.

Shadow-DJ In reply to Werewolf-Korra [2016-04-29 11:51:32 +0000 UTC]
Here's the difference though:
The guns etiher didn't look realistic or never looked like a legit threat to BATMAN. This is ASH, who is only a kid. A 10 year old! Batman is a trained martial artist!

Also, Vidalia leveled a rather realistic shotgun against Amethyst and Steven... And, no, Steven probably couldn't have found a way around that if she actually pulled the trigger.
And who DEFENDS censorship?

...lets also remember that it was the 90s. Things were a bit different back then.
And to counter that...bubble shield; I doubt human bullets can get through it if energy blasts can't.

It's funny cause I actually remember that scene being translated correctly when the show made it's earliest runs on Cartoon Network. I don't know if a different company was doing it or something, actually I don't know if it was THAT scene specifically, I do know it was the same episode as the "Pokémon Snap!" tie-in.
