Heh, I'll admit, I was being a touch pendantic.

All things considered equal, it'd be a tough fight. Of we remove all favoring for the same of plot devices in specific episodes and look merely at their individual skill and feats, then they even put pretty well. I think Bumi's got a bit more raw power, but Toph's definitely light on her feet, and has better sensory abilities.

Admittedly, Toph does have a rather exploitable weakness if Bumi can get airborne, but she also has the ability to metal bend, which gives her an edge. If she can bend a cage around Bumi and cut him off from the earth, he's done. If he can get airborne where she can't sense him and get in a good shot, she's done.

I think a lot of it comes down to location. In a wilderness setting, I think Bumi has a good chance at overwhelming her due to his sheer strength and unpredictable nature. In an urban setting, I think Toph's superior sense and metal bending would win.

even within metal, bumi can still bend. he showed that during the solar eclipse

To be fair, nobody had come along to threaten the peace like Ozai did, plus from what the future episodes tell me, he's retired from his Fire lord duties, so Iguess there hasn't been a reason to train himself up till now.

That is exactly what I thought!!! Even though he's like 70, he still had a really powerful presence so you just kind of expect to see "This is how powerful Zuko got!" Y'know, Firelord level stuff! Not old man kung-fu!

It's also good to remember that Zuko was never really that powerful of a of a bender. Above average at best. His real strength was in non-bending martial arts and strategy. His strategy was sound but he had trouble anticipating the wild card of Zaheer's bending. True he knew that the guy could airbend, but there was now way to know strong he was. And I imagine his rein as fire lord was more about diplomacy than combat so his fighting skills are probably rusty at best.

With all that said... Yay, I wish Zuko was more bad a- in that fight to.

Agree, knowing Zahir was such a dangerous badass, he should have been pulling out all the stops and whipping out some lightning on his ass. I get it, he's super old, but he's the Fire Lord! Come on people. We do have to remember that Zahir got a massive boost from the power of plot bending exercised by the writers; he won because he had to to advance the plot. It just could have been done better is all.

I was so disappointed in how easily Zuko got taken out, and his battle with Ghazan. I get that he's almost 90 and in the freezing cold, but they could of at least made their battle more impressive.

If you actually go back and look at firebenders (especially Mako) in season 2-3, you will notice just how much they really don't do anything in the story.

Seriously, I don't recall the last fire blast that actually hit someone in this story.

Ivain7 In reply to OmegaZzyzx [2014-08-09 09:01:42 +0000 UTC]

not to mention the extremely primitive techniques most of the protagonists use. in ATLAB at least they were more creative (and thus more effective). in LOK they seem to be incapable of much more than fire and earth blasts, and basic watermanipulation with a bit of ice here and there if you're lucky. Honestly, the octopusform would've been so effective against Amon's followers if not Amon himself. and that's just the beginning.

Here here! It depresses me that the writers of Korra are the same ones that created the original series. And it's not that they didn't have plenty of ideas, it's the fact that the implementation of Korra to a new audience wasn't effective. It might be due to the twelve episode limit or factors around character development. The writers had a plan with the Avatar series and a feeling that it was going to be big. Korra was not a 'sure thing', thus their original plans were limited to one season.

Overall, I can't say one way or the other what makes this series a hard watch. Heck, you could even argue that the teen factor is what works against this story. Korra isn't the worst thing on television, but it certainly has it's flaws that the limited season episodes are hard pressed to fix or make right for the audience.

I don't see how any of you can claim the series is any less creative with bending styles.  Heck the very episode you're talking about here had Eska and Desna make that amazing field of ice spikes.  Ice is far from something we've only gotten "here and there if we're lucky," and everything that was done with earthbending in the first series is done in LoK as well.  I could go on for ages about the creative and effective ways they've used bending.  The series is just as creative with bending as the first series, if not moreso.

Actually  here is why he failed so hard in that fight:

A) This prison was build to negate firebending.
B) He was not wearing anything which could heat him up.
C) He is facking  90 years old man....What you expect. To go suppa bender on us?

BFan1138 In reply to Jinksa [2014-08-03 02:37:30 +0000 UTC]

Also, they fought at night.  If it had been during the day he would have had the advantage (of course, P'li would too).

Definitely agree with C, I'd like to see one of us take a BOULDER like that at 90, or now for that matter.

Neodusk In reply to Jinksa [2014-07-29 19:16:47 +0000 UTC]

A) He wasn't in the prison, he was outside.
B) Didn't stop the combustion-bender once she broke out of the prison or the dragon from breathing giant flames.
C) YES.

This yo. It's also established that Zuko has mastered retaining heat with inner fire.

At least let him get taken out by water arms girl, only after he melts a huge section of tundra.

Yeah, I felt like this fight was over too fast. I know it's at the north pole and it's dark, both which would affect firebending, and that Zuko is supposed to be 86 here, but come on. He should have been able to put up more of a fight, and not get taken down by just a couple rocks.

I had a problem with this too!
Zuko and Kya should be amazing benders! ('Specially Zuko)
They shouldn't downplay existing characters just to make the new enemy look good. (And boy do they look good) Granted the Red Lotus gang are amazingly skilled fighters, it just doesn't seem right that the first time we see Zuko fighting and he kinda sucked..
I just love Zuko, like c'mon, he's royal Fire Nation blood! BURN ERRYTHING UP!

It's funny because the original reason he couldn't was because he was too filled with inner turmoil. And now, at the age of like 90, you'd think he'd be at peace with himself.

If I had to take a guess she is using a combination surface tension and water pressure; the tl;dr version is all molecules have a certain amount of electronegativity which affects the viscosity of the substance those molecules comprise, from what I can tell water-benders can directly control the density, molecular state, and viscosity of water so Ming-Hua is probably condensing the water to the point that it rivals near frozen syrup and then using surface tension and friction resistance to exert force on an object while maintaining fluidity. If you want to see a real world example of this there are water crystal based fluids that are so dense and viscous that human being can literally walk on them and not sink in or even get anything stuck to their shoes (though they don't last long at a temperature humans could survive at for extended periods of time).

As for Superman, his flight ability is due to his bodies bio-electric field bending space around him to alter his position similar to the warp drive NASA is developing. The heat vision is just him dispensing the photonic and cosmic radiation he absorbed from the sun similar to solar batteries that are used in desert power plants.

Tornripper In reply to Dinonick79 [2014-10-14 17:43:44 +0000 UTC]

constantly microfreezing parts of the water?

She's probably just making the water more dense, i mean, water is a liquid and all, but even in real life it can hit things with solid force. If you fall off a bridge onto water, hitting it is like hitting cement. just instead of increasing the other objects speed, she's thickening the water somehow.
