Description There it is! My first tutorial!

It takes you through the whole process of painting a realistic image digitally (in Photoshop, but will work just as well in Painter, MS Paint, etc) and is loosely based on a lot of training DVDs and professional advice (thanks Tez) I got.

Hope you get something out of it

Download the deviation for the tute, it's quite big (something like 7600 pixels long)

I was just about to create a tutorial for my method of painting from photos, but then I saw this, and yeah, I decided I probably won't create a tutorial any more, as it'd be almost the same as yours. xD

Next time someone asks me how to do realism, I'll direct them to your tutorial.

Nice to see someone else paint in this style too. You certainly are doing a way better job than me. Amazing. Very detailed steps and descriptions <3

THis is really helpful! But I'm stuck on the fur part because I don't have any fur brushes(I'm using gimp) well I downloaded a set but they don't work good.Do you know any methods(I usually use smudging and the dodge/burn to practice fur, it looks real but it doesn't do good on actual drawings)or brush downloads that will look good like yours?

Sweet I've been looking for a tutorial like this one for awhile, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, it's very informative and easy to understand, I raise my hat to you sir

Now would you mind doing the world a huge favor and make some more?
Pretty Please ?

Thanks for the commentary and good insight along with excellent protips. It's a hard hump to get over painting when you dont know what to look at! It was a whole learning experience, not just "paint these colors here"

I love this, especially since I intend on doing some realism of my boyfriend's cats for him somewhen. I was just wondering though, did you create your "fur" brush yourself, or download it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NeonDuck In reply to luminousanteater [2009-03-06 13:33:57 +0000 UTC]

thank you

i made the fur brush myself, it's really just a few dots loosely grouped together. there might well be much better fur brushes out there, I was too lazy to look

luminousanteater In reply to NeonDuck [2009-03-06 18:37:59 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah I know that feeling. I managed to find one fur brush that automatically rotates to create fur strokes, but it's difficult to get used to.

This is awesome. I've been looking at my own digital work and going "damn, I suck", and this tutorial explained a couple of the reasons why. I just need to get comfy with photoshop like I am with traditional stuff.

NeonDuck In reply to Kaleris [2009-01-10 01:48:33 +0000 UTC]

thanks!

It's really just about finding the right tutes to shed some light on things. I got really lucky in finding some awesome tutes that really helped me, and I'm also lucky to have a boss at work who doesn't mind explaining a few things. So I wanted to pass that knowledge on, and I'm glad to see it's helping you

oh one thing I don't think I mentioned in the tute - this was done with a tablet. If you're gonna paint in photoshop that's the way to go!

A most amazing and simplifing tutorial. Please make more. I like how you also show the layers you used. So often its just a picture and the actual process gets lost in translation. Great Job!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NeonDuck In reply to ehall [2009-01-04 01:20:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

Yea I tried showing things that other tutorials don't - layers for example. It helps so much just knowing these things and I always miss them in other tutes.

Gaia715 [2009-01-03 15:18:11 +0000 UTC]

Wow, wicked realistic! I wouldn't have been able to tell since there's only a couple very minor differences between the photo and the art piece. great job!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NeonDuck In reply to Gaia715 [2009-01-04 01:25:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much!

No one's more surprised than me when that happens! I've only been doing these paintings for a month (been painting for a while longer tho) and it's still quite frustrating at times.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gaia715 In reply to NeonDuck [2009-01-04 02:36:38 +0000 UTC]

I bet! I totally would not have the patience to do that ever. I can't even begin to comprehend how you got it done in 2.5 hours... I'd go crazy! lol And after just a month? You develop your skills real quick..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NeonDuck In reply to Gaia715 [2009-01-04 03:04:27 +0000 UTC]

haha, thanks

Basically the trick is to not get distracted by what you're painting, and just focus on the colours you see. That can be pretty hard because you always sort of "want" to look at the image the way you're used to.

It wasn't so much developing skills for me, it just "clicked" one day

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gaia715 In reply to NeonDuck [2009-01-04 04:14:47 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, I do more cartoony stuff and I still get really bored really quick. It's actually kind of something I gotta stop doing.. haha
You're doing great though, really great. Keep it up!
