I don't know if you'll answer, but when should you start drawing for a con? I'm a first timer and the con's next summer.

neooki23 In reply to mikakoyama [2012-12-18 13:27:08 +0000 UTC]

I would start as early as possible, as soon as you have the time. Cons come up really quick when you're preparing for them, and other things often get in the way of work.

I'd say it's best to start early and get as many items as possible done long before the con starts. Or, if you're going more for quality over quantity, start early and take as long as you want on each piece of art so there's no rush.

Hope that helps, and good luck! I wish you lots of fun and success at your first con, and feel free to ask if you have any other questions!

Thanks a lot! ^ ^ I was sort of stressing about this for a while.

I was looking at your past comments and you said the first con you sold at was Anime Expo. That's the con I'm going to be selling at next year. Are you going to be doing it next year, too?

Wah sorry for replying really late!

I haven't been back to AX for a few years, just because I live further away now. It was still in Anaheim when I last sold at it, so a lot of this have probably changed since then. You'll have to tell how it goes! You're gonna have a ton of competition, but I just know you'll do great if you do your best!

That's okay. ^ ^ Sorry for my late reply.

Really? xD I'm glad that it isn't there anymore or else it would be a pain to drive to(Even though, my parents drive me). Thanks, I will. Do you live in a different state now or is it too far to drive to LA?

Yea I live all the way in Utah now. I will probably go to AX as a guest again, but probably not as an artist for awhile.

Hello! This is a really helpful tutorial. I just went to a con and every time I go, I get more and more inspired to rent a table in the artist alley. I was wondering one thing though, if I were to sell prints as one of my products, how many different pictures should I have?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

neooki23 In reply to Narutofan098 [2012-10-21 23:53:53 +0000 UTC]

Well I would say if you're going to have a binder of prints on your table, (which is the display most people tend to go with) I would make at least 10 different pictures for people to flip through, put back to back, and always keep the binder open to your best ones.

If you're going to display your prints on the wall or around the table, the number would just depend on how much space you have and how big you want them to be. Prints look great on the wall behind the table and may be noticed more than if they're just displayed on the table in a portfolio.

You can look at table displays online and decide on a display method you like the best, and adjust your products accordingly. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask if you need anything else!

Lol this tutorial is reeeeally old but I have a question and I haven't been able to find an answer:
Im wanting to start selling my art at cons but I don't feel comfortable about drawing other peoples popular characters (like those from hetalia or naruto)
Do people at con still buy merchandise that is of original characters even if they might not have a manga or comic that they are a part of?
I'm wanting to base most (if not all) of my art on the different products on three of my characters that are a part of one storyline, but the comic book featuring them us not created yet.
Should I widen my choice of characters? Or can I get away with drawing just the three characters in mind?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

neooki23 In reply to BangingPotsandPans [2012-04-15 00:32:09 +0000 UTC]

In my experience, without a comic explaining who the original characters are, usually they will not be as popular.

I would suggest you either make a wider range of character designs, or design some original characters that people can recognize, i.e animals or common themes, or finish a small comic to sell along with your prints of your characters.

Just think about whether you would be interested in buying art of someone else's original characters, and what would make you want to buy it.

Hope that helps!

What is the minimum age for artist alley? :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

neooki23 In reply to ThEpAnDaOfDoOm [2012-01-18 02:00:38 +0000 UTC]

That would depend on what Artist Alley you're attending, but I first sold art when I was 12. If you are under-age, the AA representative at the convention may want your legal guardian's permission, or you may have to have an adult at your table with you.
Just send an email to the convention you'd like to sell at and ask them what their policy is.

;u;~ You are amazing Neo!

- Fidget.- I'm selling art for my first time at a con in November and I'm sooo nervous. .u.~

I'm never cash commissioned on here, so it really makes me even more nervous to think that no one might buy my art at a Con.

Is this normal to feel this way? >W<

Of course! >.< Every convention I go to I still get a little stressed that no one will buy anything! And I've been doing it for years! It is totally normal to feel that way.

But every time you go and people do buy your art, you gain more confidence! I just know you will do really well, because your art is absolutely beautiful!

Hi, I'm looking to get an artist alley for the first time this year with my friend...
I don't think I'll have access to any sort of printer at the con, so I'm taking your advice of 10 of each product. I'm still kind of worried of the possibility of running out, though. I mean, I'm rather confident in my art skills, but I know I'm not really a pro, at least compared to others, so I suppose it is a safe number... :/
I was just wondering if you could offer any more advice?
(Here's some examples of my current art if it helps: [link] [link] [link] :V )

Thanks a bunch! :3

neooki23 In reply to Jarino [2011-07-01 13:07:18 +0000 UTC]

The ten of each rule is really the minimum you should have, if you can't afford make any more than that. If you can, I do recommend having more than ten copies of each to avoid running out. You can always save them for your next convention if you don't sell them all.

neooki23 In reply to xbloodykiss06x [2011-03-30 21:35:03 +0000 UTC]

Sorry I'm so late getting back to you! >.<

Here are some types of paper I like to use:

I like to use glossy paper for prints, (pictures meant for display purposes only) because they finger prints on them easily, but make pictures look really nice. It's very expensive.

Matte paper has the quality of glossy without the fingerprints, so I use it for bookmarks and other prints that people will be holding a lot.

Copy paper and cardstock are both fairly cheap. Most people use cardstock for all of their artwork, including prints and bookmarks. I use plain copy paper when the artwork is going in something, like a glass frame or a keychain.

There are tons of different types of paper. I recommend playing around with them and choosing the types that you like the best.

Your tutorials have been very inspiring and make me even more anxious to open up a table next year!
I do have a few questions, though. Have you ever done a booth at Oni-con? If so, do you know if you're allowed to build your own structures to place on your table, given they abide by the height restrictions? Because I wanted to build some nifty little shelves to place on and behind my table, but so far, I've asked about this on Y!A, Google, contacted Oni-con, Ask.com, and About.com... And no one will answer my question. D: They all either say "I've never been to oni-con, so I don't know" (wow, so helpful...) or they say that it's a bit early to start planning for Oni-con.

Do you know if most conventions allow homemade display structures?

Phew! Sorry for the long-arse comment!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

neooki23 In reply to MoldyMuffinz [2011-01-18 19:44:32 +0000 UTC]

I have never been to Oni-con, but I do know that usually convention websites will have the email address or phone number of the person in charge of the artist alley and they can tell you if shelves are allowed. I would go ahead and make the shelves, but have a back-up plan just in case they aren't allowed.
I've seen lots of big structures at different conventions and as long as they aren't surpassing the size of the table it shouldn't be a problem.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MoldyMuffinz In reply to neooki23 [2011-01-18 20:36:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, I did check the website (Oni-Con), and when I emailed them about it, all the guy replied with was "Isn't it a little too early to be planning for Oni-Con?". So I sent them an email back asking why he couldn't just tell me, and I've yet to get a reply. That was 2 months ago.

And, yeah, I was planning on making the shelves anyway, but I also wanted some solid information but no site seems to want to help. You're actually the first out of the 6 people I've asked on DeviantArt about artist alley booth rules that has even replied. :/
But thanks!

Sometimes the people in charge are just dissorganized. It happens all the time, even though he should tell you what you need to know. Sometimes if they don't know the answer they just don't reply. >.<
Like I said, it should be ok. I've never had an artist alley person get upset of structures on the table. Also, if the guy doesn't know himself, you can probably bet he doesn't care. Just go with it and hope for the best.

Good luck! I hope you get a lot of success at your table!

Thank goodness there is a tutorial! I was thinking of participating in artist alley but I didn't know where to go to learn about it from people who have been on the inside.

I'm very reluctant because I don't feel my art is worthy at all, I get scared when I hear people who have sold nothing!

What were your ups and downs at your first time in artist alley?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

neooki23 In reply to WeirdCircus9 [2010-09-21 14:44:27 +0000 UTC]

The first time I ever sold my art at an artist alley I was really scared! I was selling at Anime Expo, surrounded by older Japanese artists who of course were a lot better than I was.

I think the real thing to remember about selling art is that your business comes first and your art comes second. Be nice and fair with people, and I bet you'll be able to sell a lot. I have seen artists of all different skill levels due well in the artist alley because they made people feel comfortable at their table.
