Description Some people asked for this so here it is. I'm bad at explaining so try to follow up:

Info: Paint Tool Sai and round brush. (any program that has a round brush and layers works however, like photoshop or gimp)

1. Sketch the character and flat colour it. 2 layers: lineart, colour.

2. Do basic shading and stuff (recommend to use water & blur tools on this). 4 layers now: overlay tones, shading, lineart, colour.

3. Merge all layers. Add fur shapes with darker tones. Long fur tends to gather into tufts and is messy, follow the fur direction and how the fur would act in different positions. I can't teach you how fur acts, look at real life animals for that and study. Short fur doesn't gather into tufts as easily.

4. Add lighter tones and a little messyness inside each fur tuft. 1 layer.

5. Add more details and depth to shades, clean edges with background's colour brush, not eraser. Add single furs around. 1 layer.

6. More details etc.. Also check that the original colours have stayed how they should look on the character. Use eye and not codes to see if colours are correct. 1 layer.

And done. Sometimes I use textures with overlay on pictures to make them look cool.

Here's some drawings I've used this technique on:

Sorry for the joke, but this tutorial looks like something this - i.imgur.com/T7A7Iqk.png?1

First, i thought that some cloning/pattern-repeat tool is used, then I realize, that this is not tool, just ordinary brush and YEARS of training

That's not even the original owl tutorial D: The original was much more skillfully drawn!

But yea, sai didn't have a clone tool xD

How do you get your lines to taper off to a point? Β I feel like I have way too much trouble with this than I should. Β I use a mouse and GIMP if that matters. Β Thank you

JooceBox In reply to Sairendipity [2016-08-17 16:16:04 +0000 UTC]

I feel your pain. Most people use graphics tablets and the pressure sensitivity makes it pointy if they just flick, but if you have a mouse, try FireAlpaca. It has a brush setting that's fade in/out and it tapers to a point with mouse or tablet!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Neotheta In reply to Sairendipity [2015-09-21 13:59:04 +0000 UTC]

Using a pressure sensitive tablet helps a lot, if using a mouse you can always use an eraser to edit the strength of the lines by erasing and making them thinner. Try using Krita for drawing however, gimp is outdated and meant for photo editing/manipulation, not drawing. Krita is a similar program that's free and no-cost but intended for drawing/painting and is updated regularly (this is what I use too, it's been the best drawing program so far, better than sai or photoshop which I previously used) :3

If you want a drawing tablet, look for intuos 3's from ebay or similar places, I've found several good deals for them that have been under 50e - they're better than the latest wacom tablets in my opinion and also cheap of course.

Neotheta In reply to xJaelynn [2015-07-21 22:17:10 +0000 UTC]

See photos for reference on how different types of fur acts. This tutorial is more for what kind of steps to take so you don't end up spending too much time detailing but get a good flow and results. I used pretty much a basic round brush through the entire drawing, nothing special. Once you get ahold of the basics you can start trying out special brushes to speed up the progress even more.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Neotheta In reply to LockStockCreation [2014-10-09 19:40:05 +0000 UTC]

Regular round brush, the basic thing you find from any art program as the first thing. You can try the same technique with different brushes to get a different look, this is just the very basic idea of the technique x)

Neotheta In reply to lovenovels [2013-01-01 17:15:53 +0000 UTC]

ummm, I'm really bad with trying to describe what I mean. But you need to shape the tips of the little fur tufts more sharply, also pay attention to the direction where the fur flows, use sharp brushes, fur is made of single small hairs, blurred brushes make it look like smooth material.
