Incredibly stubborn and motivated David does everything for himself and will not stop to consider another opinion or way to get the job done. Most people are blown off unless they've got something to give him, and even then he won't let them get too close. Saying he has trust issues would be a huge understatement. He treats everyone with hostility at first, though he does have a bit more patience with women. However this is only because he has experience with them having better intentions.Furthermore he's quite nontraditional. He upholds none of his family's tradition, nor does he display any interest in his history or what is expected of him. Now while this is mostly because he had very little contact with his family, it's also because he doesn't see it as relevant. David lives every day doing exactly what he wants to and feels is necessary. Nothing more, nothing less.

However there is a softer side to him. While he is very, very difficult to get close to and will question all of your motives from the get-go, he can actually be quite caring. He isn't one to be violent unless he feels directly threatened and would need a lot to go as far as killing someone. Summary:

{David was raised on the streets up until his mother was reported to child services when he was five. Immediately he was stuck in foster care, but due to behavioral issues he was never there long. 3 months at most up until the fourth grade, in which he was caught stealing from a teacher and threatening a student with his ability. Not wanting to get caught, David went on the run and spent the rest of his life on the streets doing whatever he could to get by. For years he kept to himself and stayed uninvolved with as much as possible, but when his refusal to help a group of teenage specials got them killed he was forced to see it from a different perspective. It was a few years later that he ended up saving a special from an aggressive police officer and discovered the rebellion. He's definitely made it clear he's apart of it, although he does remain as uninvolved as he can. David is still a one man show after all.}

David's entire life has been spent in poverty. There were very few times he got to see the inside walls of a building, and usually it was just a low income, drug filled apartment. His mother did whatever she could to afford the essentials but they were not living large by any means. Once he was old enough to speak she used him to rope in customers, pity money. Whatever she could manage to get people to give them. However it didn't take very long for her to get reported to child services, and just like that she was gone. David was quickly whisked away to some foster home a couple towns over while they assessed his case. His mother was a druggie and a prostitute, so she was immediately deemed unsafe and kept away from him entirely.

For awhile he tried to live life like a normal kid, but there was always something that got in the way. Something like undeserved sour looks and separation from the rest of the kids. Barcodes at that table, and everyone else at the other. Barcodes wait longer for dinner, barcodes get shorter time on the laptop, barcodes do this while the others do that. But most of all, everyone ignores it when a 'normal' kid hurts a barcode. It wasn't long for David to develop a sense of resentment for his new 'family', and after barely a year he lashed out. A five year old biting another kid was concerning enough, but if he was a barcode, a special? Apparently that was a very big deal.

The ordeal was resolved quickly enough, but his foster family now wanted nothing to do with him. David was quickly shipped off to another home and situated with a therapist, but it never helped. He soon turned six and started first grade while his anger and his bad habits continued to get worse. From stealing food and money to getting into fights the issues really didn't get any better. Most homes wouldn't hold him any longer than a couple months so the very last thing David did was make friends. His life repeated like this for a couple years until an incident in fourth grade.

The temptation to steal from a teacher was a little too difficult for him to pass up, but there was a problem. Another student had left his lunch in the room and caught David in the act. Being a troubled nine year old he didn't know how to process his anger and threatened the kid. However it wasn't long until a passing teacher walked in at the sound of commotion, and -- to say the least -- being seen on top of a peer with a fist full of fire doesn't leave a nice impression.

With no other idea of what to do David ran. He was terrified of being punished even though he had no idea of the severity of what he'd done, so he didn't stop. He ran as far as he could, camping out in bushes and backyards overnight. After all a tiny kid was a lot harder to see in the dark, and even if he were to be discovered people were more likely to help him than hurt him. He did that for as long as he could, bumming food off of anyone who'd give it to him, but people got angry quick. It was when doors wouldn't open and threats of calling the cops met his ears that he gave it up. However there was one small problem... He had no other way of getting food.

Being as young as he was he entertained a lot of ideas of just giving up and going back home, but it was the fear and the resentment that kept him away. In a few weak moments he almost wished they'd come and find him, but his reluctance to do it on his own meant he never went back. It didn't take long for him to start eating out of garbage cans and go as far as breaking and entering to get food. After all, that's what his mother had done wasn't it? The only difference was that he lacked the street smarts. Food poisoning was common, leaving him very malnourished. And nevermind all his deficiencies. In between the ages nine and eleven David was a very, very unhealthy child, but all that stopped being bad once he found a place.

At eleven years old he found out that many terrible people were looking for kids to help them commit crimes. After all, who'd suspect an eleven year old to be apart of a major crime ring? He did whatever they asked him to. Activities ranging from pairing men off with prostitutes, aiding in the delivery of drugs, baiting cops and other undesireables. Sure, he knew it was wrong, but it's what he had to do to get by. It was that or starving to death, even if he hardly got paid at all. This kept up for many years and he was never caught due to how often he changed hands and relocated. But he had to move up sometime.

A little after he turned 15 David discovered how deep the crime in the city really went. Prostitution, drugs, murder, robbery. Sure, he'd seen it all before but he'd only just scratched the surface and his childish mind really hadn't thought much farther than 'this'll get me food'. Now that he was older it was much easier to imagine doing these crimes himself instead of just being a stupid little kid that helped where he could. So he moved up. He did bigger things. Stole and pawned, pickpocketted, money and jobs under the table. If you asked him to do something and offered money for it -- no matter how much -- he'd do it. Well, as long as you didn't require him to come back. All in all David lived with very little commitment and kept to himself. He'd had enough experience with gangs to know that getting into someone else's business was a good way to get yourself killed, or worse.

No, right then the only thing he was concerned about was getting them and their business out of his house and away from them.

Once they had left he went back to hiding and waited. It wasn't easy to relax, and the second he thought he was finally starting to breath properly he heard gunshots. David was terrified. He just couldn't get their expressions out of his head. They'd been afraid, and what kinda fucking criminal looked like that when they were running from the cops? Something just seemed off about it.

It was only a day later that he realized they were all specials. Barcodes. Shot and killed for aggravated assault on an officer. All his life he had witnessed discrimination against people with barcodes and abilities, but he hadn't ever seen something like that before. The tension yes, but not death. It opened his eyes quite a bit, and it wasn't long before he really started to realize how much of a problem it was. The newscast talked about them as if they were less than and every report of an attack was always phrased as 'another one'. It was almost like they were animals. Maybe he didn't know enough about English to know why it was bad to phrase things that way, but it dug deep. He was smart enough to be mad about it. Though apparently not enough to actively get involved. No, his mentality of 'me, myself and I' stuck with him.

At least until he had a tough run in. David was extremely reluctant to get involved with the police, going as far explicitly avoiding them to the point of getting a couple of teens killed. A barcode standing off with an officer barely ten feet away. Confliction beat around his brain. The situation was obviously escalating, and there was no doubt that this kid would end up like all the other idiots who fucked with the police. But the thing was... He wanted to help. Sure, he'd fucked over a million other people the exact same way, but this one felt different. He'd seen enough news reports that it felt personal. As soon as the officer moved for his gun David reacted, though it was more on impulse than anything else.

A fireball barreled into his chest, doing nothing more than knocking him back at that range. However it was just enough to give the kid an edge. A handful of seconds later the officer was knocked unconscious with the kid mostly unharmed. Immediately David turned to leave, not wanting to get anymore involved than he already had, but the other barcode- the kid called for him to wait. Which he did with extreme reluctance. The other barcode quickly expressed confusion in the fact that he didn't know who David was, and begun asking questions about some rebellion. David's confusion in turn sparked a discussion, though his replies were short and lacked thought. It wasn't long before David snapped at the kid, telling him he wanted nothing to do with it, but he was persistent. Before he left he gave David the time and location of a meeting and urged that he go to it, but he never gave a reply.

That night he hadn't been able to sleep. He'd attacked an officer, and even though he probably hadn't seen too much of his face it still put him on edge. Then there was the rebellion, whatever that was about. He couldn't understand why it was necessary. Sure, the discrimination was hard to deal with, but it wasn't like it got them killed. Not often anyway. Everything that was happening with them was causing tension, doing more good than bad, but he still couldn't stop thinking about it. As much as he hated tension and working with others, the offer of the meeting was too hard to refuse. And so he attended, though he kept pretty quiet. From then to now his involvement has been minimal in fear of ruining his reputation or ending up dead, but he was a part nonetheless.
