At a glance, Mercer looks like your run-of-the-mill law enforcer, upholding the law through an unusually bitter and vexed behavior. While the first impression isn’t so far off from the truth, there’s more than meets the eye.
Mercer wants nothing more than providing his superiors with the utmost service and giving more than the expected results. He has a very strong sense of duty, and is loyal to a fault, making 100% certain he puts forth everything he has to offer. That being said, he expects the same of his comrades, and wastes no time pointing out the flaws of others if they’re made apparent. Mercer is a large bomb with a short fuse, as he is ready to pop off at any given moment should he be provoked. Although he's much better with his ill-temper, he isn't afraid to go off on anyone, but holds his tongue if the endgame costs him his job (because he loves his job).
To put it straight, he’s impatient and brutally honest and leaves no room for second impressions before letting his judgmental side take the wheel. Mercer’s strongest neutral trait is his stubbornness, with no proper reason or order, he refuses to stray from whichever path is taken. In the case of a mission, he constantly reminds himself and others that “Orders are orders, and should be followed no matter the outcome.” This however, doesn’t mean that he won’t change things up, and complete his mission in whichever way he sees fit. As long as the mission is done efficiently, and no civilians are harmed, then the method doesn’t matter.
Mercer isn't just that, but also very arrogant. He places himself and his talents above others, and will scoff at others who don't try to put their best foot forward. For him, it’s a gamble; if someone is falling behind, he'd either cut them loose or try to carry their weight while overestimating his own abilities. Some see it as his way of showing compassion for comrades, but it’s really so that the job gets done and to maintain his own status. He values teamwork, and won’t make it an issue since his job requires it.
Of course, that doesn’t come without slack, as these traits always bite back and often keeps others at bay. This isn’t the worst trait of Mercer. What tops everything, is his mercilessness. Mercer’s nickname “Mad Dog” was given to him because of this trait. He had no pity or remorse towards SPECIALs, and made that very clear. While he did keep in mind basic protocol, he is also calculative, finding loopholes for his personal gain. When the situation called for it, he wouldn’t hesitate to take down misbehaving SPECIALs-- all of this topped with an icy stare and a bone chilling smile.

┏ Background SUMMARY:
Mercer grew up in a small low-class family as the second son of Albert and Suzanne Mercer. His parents were very bitter towards SPECIALs, and raised him to share that hatred. For some time, he didn’t understand why, but eventually began hating them out of habit. Every bad move made by SPECIALs gave him even more of a reason to believe that they were no good. His twin sister Diana, felt differently about them. Because of her, the two were able to befriend a few SPECIALs at a young age, and kept their secret well hidden from others. Their parents would surely punish them if they found out that they've been hanging around and getting friendly with them. An accident happened between the two sides that threatened the lives of all the children present at the time. This accident left Mercer with a few scars and Diana with feelings of betrayal and mistrust. Though unlike Mercer, she readily forgave them for what happened as she got older. The two forgot their faces, and carried on to prepare themselves for their future.
Diana solely believes that laws could be enforced and people could be protected without the need to hate whomever they're against --especially if those people mean no harm. Mercer disagreed, believing that they were monsters not fit to walk the same Earth as any normal human being. He was somewhat lenient with them, as Diana, was soon to be married with one. Mercer didn't like the man, but if he could make his sister happy, he'll accept him. Diana was lucky enough not to join B.O.S.S. while she carried this on in secrecy... It'd be much more trouble than it’s worth anyway. He had his own plans, and advised her not to join B.O.S.S. if she were going to take that route. This job wasn’t fit for someone who held steadfast to such troublesome ideals.
Diana followed his advice, continuing her training as a police officer instead of making any more attempts to join B.O.S.S. On her wedding day, a rebellion broke out, Mercer was recognized as an agent of B.O.S.S., and the small old church where the wedding ceremony was being held was set ablaze. Diana lost her legs, and Mercer suffered a permanent burn scar on his back when he attempted to save her. Since then, he had nothing but resentment towards SPECIALs. He officially joined B.O.S.S. to protect non-SPECIALs, but also to find an outlet for his contempt towards them. With her fiance nowhere to be found, and the rising outbursts of rebellion sprinkled across the city, Mercer felt it was important for him to step up his game. As a new recruit in B.O.S.S., there was much he had to learn, and he openly took on any challenge he felt would benefit him as an agent. Mercer is a pretty large guy, so he doesn't exactly move as fast as some others can. Though he can move at just the right speed to keep up, it would be easy to get close or behind him if he isn't careful.
Mercer is a tank type of fighter, even though he tries to play it safe by keeping his distance. If disarmed, he has no trouble using other means to fight, but there are plenty of blindspots if the opponent is quick enough to catch them.

- He’s ambidextrous, but mostly uses his right hand for weapons while he writes with his left.
- Has a huge ugly burn scar on his back from a fire caused by a SPECIAL on his sister’s wedding day.
- His lip scar was from a fight with his sister’s ex-fiancé. Who Mercer found amongst a small group of rebels. The two fought, but the man could barely put up a fight. The scar, is Mercer’s constant reminder of this fight, and represents his resolve.
- For a long time, Mercer has put himself through several trials that’d train his body to endure certain levels of pain. His strength overshadows his endurance and he has his limits still within human boundaries.
- With the exception of his superiors and Quinn, Mercer will never like being told what to do or how to do it.
- The only time he genuinely smiles is when he's with Quinn, or is on "the hunt". (The Hunt: a personal title, he uses this term when hunting down trouble-making SPECIALs.)
- Any other case, he’d just grin or give a really fake smile.
- If he tried to crack a smile that isn't genuine or purposefully fake, he'll make babies cry.
- He drinks his coffee black, no sugar, no cream. Pls don't corrupt his bitterness with sweetness.
- Mercer has had a bad string of luck with animals in general, though he hates cats the most. He isn't very compassionate towards most dogs or any other pet either-- but they're more obedient and trustworthy.
- He thinks children are nothing but trouble and a big distraction.
- Despite his disdain for SPECIALs, he will not openly bother them if they are not breaking the law. So he doesn't provoke them, he'll try holding things back.
- Heterochromia - Very common trait in their family. He and his sister were born with it. They have the opposite colors for their eyes.
- Mercer gets very bad sunburn, because of this-- any vacation days given is only saved for that. That or he invests in very good protective lotion...

- Mercer met Quinn through work, and quickly grew attached to her.
- Instead of the nickname "Mad Dog" his comrade Quinn calls him "Mad Pupper"
- While it took some getting used to, Mercer kind of doesn't mind the name. He'll only accept it from her.
- She is the only person who can subdue him/ease his burning anger (keeping him from doing anything too rash/stupid).
- She is also the only one he lets dominate him
- After spending some time crashing at each other's places, the two decided to move somewhere together. At the start, Mercer was surprised that anyone would even want to be around him since he wasn't exactly a great person.
- Diana is the older twin and the only person Mercer still considers family.
- Mercer still loves his sister, and is extremely protective of her.
- The two were going to join B.O.S.S. together, but her plans to marry and the incident that costed her her legs ruined their plans.
- Mercer feels at fault for this, but he doesn't beat himself up over it. If anything, he treats it as a lesson to be learned.
- Diana didn’t plan on joining B.O.S.S to convince them to think or do anything differently other than lending a peaceful hand in guiding the people with rules to boot.
