BACKGROUND

               Silas grew up on the outskirts of Moldova, bordering Ukrainian farmland and the Black Sea. There he lived on a farm with his mother, father, slew of siblings, and his paternal grandparents- which meant that each passing day was always very lively. As one of the eldest sons, he learned the ways of working the land and tending to the animals when he wasn’t attending school. Unfortunately, this meant he wasn’t very diligent about his academic studies. He quietly resigned himself to taking over the family land and making a humble living like his father.

                He gradually took more and more of the farm labor upon himself when his father became more unable during his final years of secondary school in hopes of reducing losses from decreased productivity. His ambitions to bear the burden of the land were drawn to an abrupt hold when he hit 18 and was bound by country law to serve in the armed forces for a year. It was with a heavy heart and deep reluctance that he left the easy-going life into one of grueling schedules and training. It was nothing like the manual labor he had been used to- muscles and reflexes he had neglected were targeted and trained for combat. He swallowed his exhaustion and pushed onward with the reasoning that it would only be a year.

                During his year going from bunker to bunker, letters came in from home that indicated that his family situation was not getting any easier. At this point he was forced to decide- either return and try to make ends meet or seek a new means of making money for home. He combed his brain for anything he could do- his grades wouldn’t lend themselves to medicine or engineering. It seemed as though there was very little he could do, until it dawned upon him. Using himself as a tool suited him just fine all his life, continuing a career in the military didn’t seem like a bad idea. He applied himself in becoming a stand-out foot soldier, working quickly, efficiently, and without complaint to his superiors. He became a soldier worth his salt in completing operations in a timely fashion.

                He finished his obligatory term with distinguished service, and by recommendation of friends and family alike, pulled what little he had together to leave to the USA. The land of opportunity, they said, it was well worth a shot. Luckily his acquired combat experience and honors from back home earned him a scholarship with the NorthShore Commandos in sunny California. It wasn’t the solution he had planned for, and being alone miles from home filled him with anxiety, but his determination propelled him through his feelings of dread.

His normally outlandish daydreams will occasionally present a solution so far out of the box that they just might be the answer. There's some use to being a space cadet, after all. Other times it's just funny.

Still, even justifications fail sometimes and his stresses build up to a point that they begin to leak out violently if there is no other outlet available to curb them. He figures it's better not to let others bear the burden of your personal dilemmas, leaving an emotional gap between himself and his brothers-in-arms that leaves his interpersonal relationships feeling very professional and impersonal.
