History: tldr - he tried to be a good boy. he tried very hard for 10 years and still wasn't one. then ofc he broke the law and has to go military school.

Ming was born in America, the only person in his immediate family that gained citizenship. He lived a life in between two countries. In China, Ming came from a well to do family, but given the oppressive nature of his home country, his parents wanted to send him to America, where there were more opportunities for him -- and in turn them. When he was old enough to start school, Ming stayed with extended family and attended a decent public school. At his parents' request, he tried to keep on a strict academic track where most of his days should've been spent either religiously studying or improving his skillset in order to ensure he would be tailored for the major of his choice: computer science.

However, the family he stayed with weren't very strict, so they allowed him ultimately free reign. Not that it was a bad thing, but going from a semi-oppressive household into one where his results didn't really matter to the residents made him careless. He tried incredibly hard finding other things that were vaguely related to computer science, for example, going to old arcades to play crane games. After all, arcade games could be considered a form of study because of how rigged they are. Only someone that knew the mechanics of the game (or could find a way to manipulate it) would be able to succeed.

Getting into college was easier said then done. Because he'd spent most of his time attempting to study but in reality goofing off, he was unable to stand out from the rest of the crowd. It suddenly hit him how irresponsible he'd been, and Ming was scared shitless. Not wanting to disappoint his parents, Ming lied to them, saying he'd been accepted to UCI.

In an attempt to clean up his act, Ming tried immersing himself in self-study while juggling community college as well. At this point, he'd begun to develop a habit of finishing everything that was handed to him before doing anything else. While it was detrimental to his health most of the time, as he'd forgo sleep in order to finish self-tests, he was at least able to discover that he had an interest in cryptanalysis, finding it fun to decipher information. He attempted to polish this by trying to decipher his own encrypted emails, finding it thrilling whenever he was able to crack a complicated cipher.

Ming continued this hellish cycle of academic torment in hopes of being able to transfer into UCI when he turned 19. However, when applications rolled around the following year, competition proved to be difficult despite his best efforts to stand out. After all, he had no real depth to his application aside from the fact that he was self-driven. Without any extracurriculars or other skills for that matter, he'd been rejected again. After essentially throwing away a year in community college, Ming angrily dropped-out, believing that continuing to learn on his own was more beneficial than another year of community college.

At the age of 22, he had a good grasp on analyzing patterns and decoding them; however, time was ticking down to doomsday -- his fake graduation date. Ming was always the type of person to worry internally, never wanting to show nervousness on the outside. But as the date loomed closer, he began to panic. Armed with only a GED, he had to figure out a way to be successful. Ming had heard about a recent scandal in China, where a group of hackers had broken into a law firm to gain information that could influence stock price. Wanting to do something of that vein, he targeted a similar string of small law practices, attempting to break into their servers and steal encrypted information. Ming was able to take from one, but ragequit every other firm he'd tried hacking into. With the information he did attain, Ming spent days trying to break the code. But without being apart of the firm, doing so was near impossible.

His string of clumsy attempts didn't go unnoticed. His failures finally caught up with him just as he was beginning to decrypt the emails. The man was looking at a fair amount of jail time... unless he accepted a proposal. All he had to was go to a military university, and his record would be wiped clean.
