Being a Beginner Week
When I first started designing plushie patterns, I had no idea what I was doing. And at the time, I thought that there was only one way to go about it: by drawing out shapes on paper and re-doing them over and over, until they looked right. Granted, this is a perfectly fine approach, and has worked well for countless people. But especially for a beginner who has little clue what sort of shapes will work best, there are other techniques to try as well - ones I wish I had known about when I began my journey into pattern-making. I’m going to introduce a few different approaches to pattern-making. My hope is that, from all these techniques and ideas, most people will find at least one that they think would be a good place to start, or an interesting new direction to try.
But before I go into that, here are some general tips:
Tip #1: Prototyping
Whatever method you use to design patterns, you should test your patterns by making prototypes - these are generally sewn faster and out of lower-quality fabric, to identify issues in the pattern so the pattern can be perfected before making the final plushie. Keep in mind that stretch and fabric thickness may affect how the pattern works in the finished plush. When in doubt, use fabrics with less stretch rather than more stretch compared to what you plan to make the final plush out of.
If you plan to make plushies out of:
- Faux fur, fleece, minky, or similar fabrics - use felt or cheap fleece for prototypes. Avoid using fluffy fabrics for prototypes, as they make it difficult to gauge the true shape, and also disguise seams.
- Linen fabrics, knit fabrics, or upcycled clothing - use muslin or other cheap thin fabric for prototypes. Note that these fabrics fray easily, so I would not recommend them for those new to sewing.
Tip #2: Basic Stitches
Making prototypes (and final plushies too) does not require a sewing machine. Nearly all of the plushies I have made were completely hand-sewn, so literally anyone can try with just a needle and thread. However, even if you do use a sewing machine, you will likely have to sew some seams by hand anyway. There are 3 basic stitches that I think everyone should know:
- Straight/Running Stitch - This is the most fundamental stitch. Typically, plushies are sewn inside-out with this stitch, so that the stitches are hidden when it is turned right-side-out.
- Overhand/Overcast/Whip Stitch - This stitch is less useful in actual plushie-making, but is extraordinarily useful for attaching pieces and closing seams quickly in prototypes. It can also be used to close up a stuffed plushie if you don’t want to attempt the ladder stitch, although the stitches will be visible.
- Ladder/Invisible Stitch - This is a slightly more advanced stitch that is not necessary to know, but which allows you to sew a stuffed plushie closed without leaving a visible seam (or sewing tiny pieces which can’t be turned and must be sewn right-side-out). It can also be useful in making slight alterations to a plushie or prototype.
Pattern-first Methods
This is the stereotypical method of pattern-making. This method is great for people who have a lot of creativity, are good at mentally rotating/bending shapes in their head, have good drawing skills, enjoy puzzles, and/or are familiar with typical patterns. It is most easily applied to more standard plushie types.
Mentally Folding/Unfolding
The very first pattern I made was for an elekk plushie from the game World of Warcraft. Luckily for me, the 3D model already had lines for all the seams, which were pretty close to where they needed to be. All I needed to do was to use the 3D model as a guide to mentally unfold each piece and draw them on paper. After a few tries and some alterations, I had a combination of pieces that worked.
For the most part, this is how I’ve designed many of my patterns, though usually with a mental image of how I want the plush to look, or a set of picture references. I’ve been told I’m strange for envisioning small creatures with their skin being unfolded into various shapes… but it works for me
Also, cutting out pieces of drafted paper pattern and trying to bend and fit them together (with or without tape) can help you figure out how close you are to the right shapes. You can make sure your pieces work together at least moderately well before you go through the added effort of making a prototype.
Getting Inspiration from Other Patterns
When I first started, the most difficult part was figuring out what shapes were possible, and what the best ways were to break down the model into pieces. So I looked at a lot of preexisting patterns that were similar to what I was attempting, and saw what sorts of shapes seemed to work well. If you’re not very familiar with plushie patterns, I would recommend looking at a few, and trying to understand how the pieces fit together to form the different shapes. Once you’ve gotten some ideas, try drawing your own.
One of the clearest examples of this was my Articuno pattern. I had found the following pattern by para-saurolophus (below on the left), but I wanted one that was more accurate. So I drafted my own version (below on the right), which, as you can see, was quite similar.
Keep in mind that if you heavily draw inspiration from another pattern, or use some pieces of another pattern in your own design, you should acknowledge that it was inspired by or modified from that pattern.
If you don’t know where to look for patterns, there are plenty on Deviantart. There’s even a group here dedicated to sewing patterns, called Pattern-Depot . I’ve also started compiling a database of free patterns from all around the internet.
Quadruped Pattern Structure
One thing that becomes clear once you’ve seen a few patterns is that the majority have a common structure. The most typical is the quadruped pattern, which translates very well from drawings or even photographs. In general, it consists of a side piece (sometimes combined with the head side piece, sometimes separate), a head gusset, inner legs, and a belly gusset.
In some patterns, the inner legs and belly gusset are combined into a single piece, though this often requires pieces to be sort of pinched in and sewn at essentially the armpits, so the plush isn’t splayed.
I won’t go into too much detail, because there are plenty of great tutorials about making a typical quadruped pattern (like this one ). But the side piece(s) can usually be taken directly from a picture, whether it is a photograph or a drawing; and the inner legs are often essentially cut off versions of the leg parts of the side piece. The head gusset can also be taken from a picture of the top of the head, though this is more difficult.
“Teddy Bear Style” Patterns
The name “Teddy Bear Style” may be a little misleading, because I’m not just talking about teddy bear styled plushies. I’ve found that a surprising amount of patterns seem to split up the body, legs and/or arms, and sometimes the head, into different pieces that are patterned and sewn somewhat individually, and then assembled together. Sometimes there are holes in the body that the limbs are sewn into, other times not. Making the limbs and/or head separate pieces can also allow you to create more poseable plushies, depending on how the pieces are connected.
Eventually, you’ll probably find yourself trying to design a pattern that you have no idea where to begin. For me, that was my murloc. I spent weeks trying to figure out how to make a quadruped-styled side piece with the correct angles for a bipedal creature, before I realized it was way simpler to just make the body and legs separately. Sometimes breaking it apart into pieces rather than trying to make one pattern for the whole thing can make it a lot less daunting.
Form-first Methods
These methods are great for people who like to experiment and go with the flow, have good sculpting skills (in whatever medium), and/or are struggling with the pattern-first methods. These methods may be especially helpful for more oddly-shaped characters/pieces.
In these methods, you essentially work backwards, creating a prototype or model first, and then using that as a template for your pattern. There are two main approaches to this: building from simple shapes, and creating a model.
Building From Simple Shapes
Start by sketching your character, focus on the basic shapes. Or take a reference picture and draw the shapes on top. These spheres, cylinders, boxes, cones, etc. will form the base for your prototype.
Make these pieces out of cloth and sew them together, using your sketch as a guide. Some pieces, like arms or legs, do not have to be attached unless you want part of that piece to be merged with the body in the pattern. You don't need to fully make all the shapes before connecting them - as you can see, none of my cones needed to be sewn to circles because they were later attached to other pieces, and the circles would have only gotten in the way of this.
For creating spheres, these patterns below by Silver Seams (tyrosinase ) may be really helpful. Spheres made from larger pieces (and thus less pieces) may have less roundness to their shape. I used the four-piece sphere pattern in my Heihei model.
Some characters may have basic shapes that overlap. You can either make only the part of the shape that is not overlapping, and sew this on top; or cut a hole in one piece, remove some stuffing, and insert the second shape, sewing in place. (The second method is rather messy though - but I forgot to take a picture in the middle to show it.) Keep in mind that if your character is symmetrical, you only need to make sure half of it is the way you want. For instance, I only inserted one eye because I was pleased with how it worked. If I had not liked how it looked, I would have tried again with the other eye and only used the side that looked best for the pattern.
If there are gaps between some of your pieces, you will want to add pieces to join them smoothly. If some pieces don't have the shape you want, you can pinch the fabric in and sew that area tighter together to make a better shape, or add pieces to the outside.
Pinching the fabric outward and stitching underneath is another technique you can use. This is helpful if you want to make a piece that will be sewn inserted between the two pieces, resulting in a similar look. This is what I wanted for Heihei's eyelids, though it is probably not a common plushie feature.
When the general shape is good, add other details. Not all of these have to be sewn in fabric, especially if they are flat and you want them to be separate pieces. But anything you need to test out, or that you want to merge into one of the main pieces, should be sewn.
When you’re done, draw with a pen where you want your main seams to be. Carefully cut the pieces apart, without pulling out the other seams. You may need to add more cuts for the pieces to lay flat. If some pieces were trimmed along a seam, you will also want to carefully trim off the seam allowance, so that your pieces are consistent. When all your pieces are cut apart and flat, trace them onto paper.
Be sure to try your pattern out in a prototype to make sure it still creates the shape you want, and to fine-tune the design if needed.
Creating a Model
Start by creating a sculpture of sorts in the rough shape you want for your plushie pattern. Use whatever materials you want, but remember that it may be slightly damaged in the process, so don’t use something as a model that you care deeply about. Common ideas are: crumpled paper held with tape, wire and/or tin foil, cardboard, paper mache, foam, or clay. Honestly, just use whatever you have, bonus points if it’s something that otherwise would have just been thrown away.
Once your model is the right shape, cover it somewhat tightly. The materials you used might affect how you do this, but some ideas are to tape on paper scraps until it’s completely covered, or wrap the model in thin plastic and tape it tightly. For some materials like clay you may be able to just put tape on directly (though it may be difficult to remove). You could also sew fabric scraps around it if you want. If your model is symmetrical, you may only have to cover half of it.
Then, draw on lines where you want the main seams to be, and start by cutting those lines to remove the covering from your model. Add extra cuts to your pieces until they lay flat, then trace them onto paper.
Again, be sure to test the pattern out with a prototype to see if you need to make any alterations.
Soft Model
You can also, in a variety of the model method, essentially make your prototype inside-out. If you know how to needle-felt, a basic needle-felted shape could be a great model.
Or you can make a rough skeleton of wire or pipe cleaners, wrap stuffing or fabric scraps around it to form the shape, and then wrap them with string to keep them in place. You can wrap the whole body at once, or cover one part at a time. Keep adding stuffing and wrapping with string until you get the right shape. If it is difficult to get even, focus on one half - you can always mirror the pattern at the end.
With a model like these, sewing fabric scraps around the exterior would probably work best. Try to only sew the pieces to each other, and not to the model, so that they can be more easily removed to make the pattern.
Don't worry if it looks weird or messy - that's normal. As with the "Building from Simple Shapes" method, you can always add more pieces to smooth out areas or add more shape, as well as pinching in and sewing areas that need to be tighter.
When the shape is right, as with the other model methods, draw where you want the seams to be, cut the fabric pieces off along the lines, and add extra cuts to flatten each piece to create the pattern.
The benefit of a softer model is that it is closer to an actual plush, so the shapes may be more accurate. It is also more flexible as to changes than many other types of models. Additionally, if you remove the pieces carefully, you may be able to cover the model with your finished pattern pieces to create a final plush.
My Journey/Concluding Remarks
I've learned so much through experimenting with various patterning techniques and finding different ways to think about the patterns. When I first began, I was so restricted by my idea that I had to draw the pieces out first, and that the only purpose for prototypes was to see how the pattern worked. Because of this, my first patterns were all very simple, or based largely on the shapes I saw in other patterns, like the standard quadruped design. Even those took multiple attempts and a lot of time, so I only seldomly designed my own.
The turning point for me was when I tried making a teddy bear pattern based on some reference pictures I was given. It took me months, including 6 different prototypes (and many more pattern attempts on paper). I kept getting discouraged by how slowly it was progressing, and when I finally decided the pattern was done, I wasn't entirely satisfied with it, I was just sick of drawing out more pieces to try.
After that, I started really thinking about how I make patterns. It was clear my method was inefficient for pattern types I didn't know well, so it wasn't well suited for the kinds of patterns I really wanted to make. And I realized that I had been using methods all along that could be really helpful. When I made my murloc pattern, I realized I could make different body parts separately and add them together. When I started making my Gyarados pattern, I broke up his body into basic shapes and designed each piece with a sphere in mind. And on some of my teddy bear prototypes, I cut the pieces apart as an easier way of changing where the seams were. Putting all of that together, I realized it didn't matter what the pattern pieces looked like until the end, and I could just focus on how to make the shape first. That's exactly what I did when I made Totoro, who has a more complicated shape than any pattern I had made before.
I'm still no expert when it comes to pattern-making. But finding different approaches has made a huge difference to me. Before, I rarely was able to create unique patterns that were not standard quadrupeds. But now, I can design whatever I want to, no matter what sort of shape they have. And I hope that with some of these ideas, or new ones you may think of, so can you!
