Description
A somewhat educational image. Striker the South-west Carpet Python (Morelia imbricata) deep in blue. Check out the photo of him freshly shed, you'd think both were completely different snakes!nero-egernia.deviantart.com/arβ¦

Are they hard to photograph when they're in shed? I've heard they can be fearful.

It depends on the individual. I generally get three different behaviours when photographing snakes deep in blue. First behaviour is when the snake acts defensive. They hold their ground and assume a strike position. This is probably the best reaction as it tends to photograph well. The second behaviour is coiling in a ball and laying still. This too, tends to photograph well. The third behaviour is when the snake becomes flighty. They simply want to flee and are always on the move. This is probably the worst reaction as they don't sit still, making it hard to get nice poses or clear shots.
It's true that snakes undergoing the shed cycle tend to be more defensive than normal but it's not really a problem if you know the snake's personality and know how to avoid being bitten (if the snake's inclined to bite, that is). Either way, I try to make photo-shoots as short and non-invasive as possible as I don't want to stress the snakes too much.

Cool. Things must be interesting with the ones that have a "wiggly" personality.
